Virginia Union at Virginia State Is Win-and-In — Lose, and the Season Ends Today

Virginia Union arrives in Petersburg unbeaten in the CIAA at 7-0. Virginia State, 6-1, lost its grip on a title-game berth last week — lose today and the Trojans are eliminated entirely. The Battle of Virginia, 1 p.m. ET on the CIAA Sports Network, settles a trip to Durham.

The Panthers arrive in Petersburg unbeaten in the CIAA at 7-0, riding eight straight wins. The Trojans lost their grip on a title-game berth last week — today they have to beat the best team in the conference and get help, or their championship season ends in the Battle of Virginia.

There is no version of this afternoon that ends quietly in Petersburg.

Virginia Union at Virginia State — today, 1 p.m. ET, on the CIAA Sports Network — closes the CIAA regular season with a championship-game berth sitting on the field. Virginia Union is 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference, the last unbeaten team in CIAA play. Virginia State is 7-2 and 6-1, at home, in the Battle of Virginia, with its season balanced on one result. HBCU Sports put this game at the top of its Week 10 watch list for a reason: for the Trojans, a loss ends the argument entirely.

The math nobody in Petersburg can escape

Virginia State had its chance to settle this last weekend and let it slip. The Trojans went to Johnson C. Smith with a clinching scenario in hand and lost, so today they need two things at once: beat Virginia Union, and get a Johnson C. Smith loss at Livingstone in the 2 p.m. ET game in Salisbury. If both happen, HBCU Sports notes, both Virginia schools go to Durham. If State loses, the Trojans are almost certainly done — the only path left runs through a Johnson C. Smith loss at Livingstone and a tiebreaker the CIAA has not published.

The standings explain the squeeze: Virginia Union 7-0, Virginia State 6-1, Johnson C. Smith 6-1, Fayetteville State 5-2. Sports Illustrated's Week 10 guide confirms the same table and the same destination — CIAA Championship Weekend, Nov. 13-14 in Durham, N.C., where the expanded format puts the third- and fourth-place teams on the field Friday night and the top two in the title game on Saturday, Nov. 14. Only two play for the trophy, and one of those spots runs straight through Petersburg today.

The defense that has been strangling people

Virginia Union is not arriving on reputation. The Panthers have won eight straight since their season-opening loss, and last week they recorded their third shutout of the season, 62-0 over Lincoln (Pa.). HBCU Sports' recap reads like a warning: a season-high 320 rushing yards, Ramon Brown carrying 22 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and the top-ranked defense in the CIAA holding Lincoln to 112 total yards — the third straight game Union held an opponent under 200.

Rosales has been the steady hand in the middle of it: four touchdown passes in the Homecoming win over Shaw on Oct. 24, two more at Bowie State a week earlier in the game the photo above comes from. Brown gives the Panthers their closer — 94 rushing yards against Shaw, then 150 against Lincoln — and the recent history leans the same way: Virginia Union has won six of the last eight meetings since 2018, including last season's 14-3 win.

The quarterback who almost saved it

Virginia State's case starts with the game it just lost. Against Johnson C. Smith last Saturday, Rahsaan Matthews Jr. threw for 476 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores, the Trojans piled up 614 yards of offense — and still lost 39-33 in overtime, after a blocked field goal late in regulation kept the game alive for the Golden Bulls. State's own recap is headlined by its receivers: Pretlow and Ordenes each broke 100 receiving yards in a game the Trojans had every statistical right to win. That is the team walking into an elimination game today — explosive enough to beat anybody in this league, and one mistake from watching the title game on television.

Matthews has done this before in a game State had to have: four touchdown passes at Lincoln (Pa.) on Oct. 3, and 76 points hung on Shaw on Oct. 17. The question today is not whether Virginia State can move the ball. It is whether it can finish against the one defense in the CIAA that has spent a month holding whole offenses under 200 yards.

The comparison, from the schools' and HBCU Sports' verified numbers:

  • Records: Virginia Union 8-1 (7-0 CIAA) vs Virginia State 7-2 (6-1 CIAA)
  • Last week: Union shut out Lincoln (Pa.) 62-0 — 462 yards of offense, 112 allowed. State lost 39-33 in overtime at Johnson C. Smith — 614 yards, and a loss anyway
  • At quarterback: Rosales (Union) — eight touchdown passes across his last three games — vs Matthews Jr. (State): 476 passing yards, three touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns last week alone
  • On the ground: Brown (Union) — 150 yards and two touchdowns against Lincoln — is the finisher behind the CIAA's top-ranked defense
  • The series: Virginia Union has won six of the last eight meetings since 2018, including 14-3 last season
  • The other scoreboard: Johnson C. Smith at Livingstone, 2 p.m. ET — State needs a Golden Bulls loss

By tonight, Durham has its field

By this evening the championship weekend is set: the Friday Night Blitz for third and fourth place on Nov. 13, and the top two playing for the CIAA title on Saturday, Nov. 14, in Durham. Virginia Union can book its place with the kind of afternoon it has been having for two months. Virginia State needs the best win of its season and a favor from Salisbury — in a rivalry game, at home, with the whole season in the balance. That is exactly the kind of afternoon this rivalry exists for.
