Monday Night Raw comes to Pechanga Arena in San Diego tonight with a card built out of last week's damage. A week ago, Penta opened Raw celebrating the biggest win of his WWE career — the Men's Money in the Bank ladder match, held October 10 in New Orleans — and watched his celebration turn into an ambush. Tonight, he gets the man responsible in a sanctioned match: Mr. Money in the Bank vs. Bron Breakker, one-on-one, announced Sunday by Raw General Manager Adam Pearce in his weekly mini-preview.
The backstory needs no embellishment. Last Monday, Je'Von Evans — bandaged, his right arm in a cast and his ribs taped after a brutal fall through an ambulance roof during the ladder match — came to the ring to congratulate Penta. Breakker interrupted, aimed at Penta, and Evans pushed his friend out of the way and took the Spear himself, injured ribs and all. Breakker escaped before Penta could respond. It was the latest collision in a running feud: on the October 5 Raw, Penta and Evans teamed to beat Breakker and Austin Theory in a non-title tag match, and all three then met again in the ladder match Penta won. Breakker remains one-half of the WWE World Tag Team Champions alongside Theory, which gives tonight a second edge — Penta holds a briefcase that can be cashed in on any champion, and Breakker is wearing gold.
Two champions, one ring, three weeks out
The segment with the longest shadow tonight is not a match at all. World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns returns to Raw after a week away promoting Street Fighter, and he is scheduled to come face-to-face with WWE Champion Sami Zayn ahead of their Crown Jewel Championship match in Riyadh. F4W reports Reigns will also lay out his plan for dealing with The 946 — the group that took out The Bloodline again last week after Carmelo Hayes joined its ranks — which means the champion's attention is split between the man across from him tonight and the faction dismantling his family behind him.
That split is the story of Reigns's autumn. He beat LA Knight at Money in the Bank to keep his championship, per Sports Illustrated's preview, but The 946 is stronger than it has ever been after Hayes's surprise addition, and Zayn — who has made a career of surviving rooms he was not supposed to survive — gets to watch Reigns juggle both problems live before they meet with the Crown Jewel Championship at stake on November 7.
There is also a clock on all of this. Crown Jewel, where Reigns and Zayn meet in Riyadh, is a matter of weeks away, which makes tonight's face-to-face one of the last chances the two champions get to set terms in person before they travel. Reigns walks into it having spent a week away promoting a film while his family was beaten down again in his absence; Zayn walks into it as the champion with the simpler problem — one opponent, one match — and the whole segment is built to test whether Reigns can still make a room feel like his when half his attention is owed elsewhere. In WWE, the champion who controls the last segment before a premium live event usually controls the story going into it. Tonight decides whose story Crown Jewel is.
The rest of the announced card
Also confirmed for tonight: Joe Hendry vs. JD McDonagh, a match McDonagh's critics have framed as his chance to finally silence the jokes at his expense. The rest of The Judgment Day are scheduled to be in San Diego, including hometown favourite Dominik Mysterio. Women's World Champion Liv Morgan is advertised, with the road to her Crown Jewel meeting with WWE Women's Champion Chelsea Green complicated by Roxanne Perez — who beat Green last week and believes she is owed a title shot of her own.
Oba Femi is also advertised for tonight, a week after he turned down an offer to become the next “Paul Heyman guy” — a refusal that rarely ends a conversation in WWE — and Sol Ruca appears live after beating Lyra Valkyria on Main Event last Wednesday to keep her momentum rolling. None of those appearances come with announced matches, which on a go-home stretch toward Crown Jewel usually means the show's unannounced business is where the real movement happens.
San Diego is not a neutral backdrop, either. Pechanga Arena gives The Judgment Day a hometown welcome for Dominik Mysterio, and that faction's presence tends to bend a Raw broadcast around itself: McDonagh wrestles Hendry with the rest of the group scheduled to be in the building, Morgan's road runs through Green and an impatient Perez, and every one of those threads can intersect by the end of the night. A preview can only list what WWE has confirmed — two matches, one plan, one face-to-face — but Raw's recent habit has been to let the announced card serve as the frame and the unannounced returns, run-ins and challenges fill it. With Crown Jewel close and both world champions in the building, tonight has more live wires than its short official card suggests.
Raw airs live tonight, Monday, October 19, at 8 p.m. Eastern / 5 p.m. Pacific on Netflix. The announced card, as confirmed by Pearce and WWE's own listings: Penta vs. Bron Breakker; Joe Hendry vs. JD McDonagh; Roman Reigns lays out his plan for The 946; and Zayn and Reigns, champion to champion, in the same ring. Previously will have results coverage after the show.
