Five Ubisoft Open Worlds Are Free on Xbox This Weekend — No Catch, No Subscription

October 1–4: Odyssey, Far Cry 6, Avatar, Skull and Bones, and The Crew Motorfest — open to every Xbox member.

This is the part of the column where I tell you to clear your weekend. Xbox's Free Play Days is running a full Ubisoft takeover from Thursday, October 1 through Sunday, October 4 — five open-world games, free to play — and unlike some Free Play Days rounds, this one doesn't require any Game Pass tier at all. Every Xbox member can play. That's the whole catch, and there isn't one.

The lineup: Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Far Cry 6. Skull and Bones. The Crew Motorfest. All five are Ubisoft open worlds, which means five different flavors of 'the map is huge and there's a tower somewhere.'

Here's why this weekend matters more than a normal Free Play Days drop: the usual deal has two tiers. Typically, part of the lineup is open to every Xbox player and part is reserved for Game Pass subscribers. This time, Xbox and Ubisoft agreed to none of that. Per Xbox Wire, all five games are available to all Xbox members — no Ultimate, no Premium, no Essential. And according to Neowin's rundown of the announcement, even the multiplayer portions should be fully accessible without any membership tier at all. The fine print that usually makes you scroll just isn't there. The event runs through the end of Sunday, October 4 — so if you're reading this on Saturday, you've still got tonight and all of tomorrow.

Getting in is simple. Find each game's page on Xbox.com and install it through the Microsoft Store, or on console open the Subscriptions tab in the Xbox Store and look for the Free Play Days collection — it works on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You'll need a Microsoft account, and platform availability varies game to game: Skull and Bones is Xbox Series X|S only, while the rest span both generations. Crucially, there are no progress caps. This isn't a ten-hour trial or a timed demo — you can play as far into any of the five games as you can physically get before the window closes Sunday night.

Far Cry 6 is the headliner for most people, and it's easy to see why. You're Dani Rojas, a guerrilla fighter on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara, leading a revolution against the regime of Antón Castillo — played by Giancarlo Esposito in one of the most committed villain performances in the series' history. The loop is pure Far Cry: seize territory, grow your rebel network, and escalate the chaos with resolver weapons and Supremo backpacks — improvised arsenals cobbled together from junkyard parts. You can play the whole campaign solo or co-op with a friend, which makes it the easiest sell of the weekend for anyone with a regular gaming partner. During the event it's up to 85% off — $8.99 down from $59.99 — the steepest discount on the board.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is the time-eater of the group, and I mean that as a compliment. Set during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, you play Alexios or Kassandra, a Spartan mercenary carving a legend across ancient Greece — conquest battles with 150 soldiers a side, encounters with mythological creatures and legendary figures, and naval warfare aboard the Adrestia. Eight years after launch, it's still the Assassin's Creed entry most people return to when they want the series at its most unapologetically RPG. TrueAchievements puts a full completion at 80 to 100 hours, so nobody is finishing it by Sunday — but ten hours sailing the Aegean for zero dollars is ten hours sailing the Aegean. It's 80% off during the event: $11.99.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is the one your TV has been waiting for. Developed by Massive Entertainment on the Snowdrop engine, it takes you to the Western Frontier — a new continent of Pandora never seen in the films — where you play a Na'vi reconnecting with your heritage while fighting to protect your home. It's a first-person open-world adventure built around exploration, and visually it remains the prettiest game on this list by a considerable margin: bioluminescent forests, floating mountains, your own ikran to bond with and fly. If you own a nice display, this is the one that justifies it. During Free Play Days it's 45% off — $16.49 down from $29.99.

Skull and Bones is the wildcard, and possibly the most improved game of the five. Ubisoft's ship-based pirate RPG had a famously long road to release, but it's deep into live-service life now: the game is currently in Year 3 Season 2, Crimson Waters, with the new Junk ship, Abyssal Fleet challenges, and fresh progression features. It's a completely ship-based experience set during the golden age of piracy — you command your own vessel, customize it, and take on open-seas live-service content. Heads up: it's Xbox Series X|S only, so last-gen players are out of luck on this one. And The Crew Motorfest is the weekend-speedrun pick — open-world racing across Hawaii (O'ahu, specifically) with more than 800 vehicles, playlist-style themed events, and free-roam drives with friends. It's 20% off at $47.99, which multiple outlets are calling its lowest price yet.

Now the part people miss, and it's the part that changes the math: Free Play Days isn't a demo, it's a head start with a coupon attached. Per the official Xbox announcement, everything you earn this weekend — achievements, Gamerscore, saves — carries over if you buy the game afterward, and every title on the list is discounted while the event runs. So the optimal play is straightforward: start the game you're most curious about tonight, play it like you already own it, and if you're hooked by Sunday, you buy it cheap and never lose an hour. There's no penalty for trying and walking away.

My actual recommendation, since you asked: Far Cry 6 if you want the meatiest single weekend, because Yara's gunplay loop grabs you fast, the story moves, and co-op means a friend can come along free. The Crew Motorfest if you want a completion you can actually brag about — at 20 to 25 hours it's the only one on the list where a weekend Mythic is realistic, and only if you've got a head start. Avatar if your TV deserves a workout. And Skull and Bones if you've got a crew, because sailing alone is a mood and sailing with friends is a game. Five worlds, zero dollars, no subscription. If you're done with this weekend and already thinking about what's next, our games hub tracks everything coming to Xbox and beyond — including Ace Combat 8's launch, if you'd rather spend the weekend in a cockpit than on the open seas. See you Sunday night.
