Xbox Announces Xbox Labs, a Small Team Built to Chase Gaming's Fastest-Moving Ideas

Games are being rebuilt for browsers and remixed inside other games at a pace nobody planned for. Xbox's answer is a small experimental team under its CTO, building in the open.

Xbox has announced Xbox Labs, a small experimental team led by CTO Scott Van Vliet that will build new gaming ideas in the open, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced in an October 13 post.

Something unusual has been happening to video games over the past few weeks, and on Tuesday Xbox decided to stop watching it and start hiring for it. Games have been decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never designed for, PC titles have been carried onto Apple Silicon and into web browsers, and some of the biggest games in the world have been remixed inside the source code of other games entirely. Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma described that wave in a company post on October 13 — and announced Xbox Labs, a new initiative built to chase it, according to Gematsu's report of the announcement. The group will be led by Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet, and its job, in Sharma's framing, is to turn emerging ideas into things players and developers can actually experience.

The details Sharma gave are deliberately small-team sized. Xbox Labs will bring together a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists to experiment with new ideas — including making games more accessible, giving older games new life, and enabling more players to become creators, Gematsu reported. The group will build out in the open rather than behind the usual veil of platform-holder secrecy, and Xbox says it will share the tools it develops with developers across the wider industry, not keep them locked inside Microsoft. Sharma also stressed that the company's existing priorities are unchanged — the experiment is an addition to the roadmap, not a replacement for it. Success, notably, will be judged by whether people actually care about what the group ships, a refreshingly blunt metric for a corporate skunkworks.

Why now becomes clearer when you sit with the examples Sharma opened with. The technical ground under games is shifting in ways that used to take a decade and now take a news cycle: browser technology standards like WebAssembly and WebGPU — the latter approaching 90 percent global browser support, per Sharma's post — have made the browser a plausible game machine again, and automated tooling has collapsed the cost of porting and remixing old software. Kotaku, reading the same announcement, noted what the post never says outright: much of this new wave of decompiled, translated and remixed games has been produced with generative AI tools doing the heavy lifting, and the word AI appears nowhere in Xbox's announcement. Whether you read that omission as caution, branding or legal prudence, the effect is the same — Xbox gets to plant a flag in the scene without making the scene's most contested technology its headline.

For Xbox specifically, Labs fits a longer pattern. This is the company of backward compatibility programs that treated old libraries as assets instead of abandonware, of cloud gaming that untethered its catalog from its own console, and of Game Pass experiments that rewired how its players pay for games. A small team tasked with giving older games new life and turning players into creators is speaking fluent Xbox history — the question is whether Labs gets the budget and patience that decides whether such teams become product lines or press releases. The open-development promise is the tell to watch: if tools and prototypes genuinely appear in public, on a rhythm the industry can react to, Labs is a working studio. If the openness quietly narrows to the occasional blog post, it was a signal flare.

There is also a competitive clock ticking. Browser-playable games and instant, no-download experiences are exactly the territory where platform holders have the most to lose and independent scenes move the fastest — every week a beloved old game reappears running in a tab, the argument that games belong to one storefront on one box gets a little weaker. Sharma's post reads like a company that has done that math: better to employ the people exploring the edges of your platform than to read about them. Putting the CTO himself in charge, rather than burying the team three layers down, signals that whatever Labs finds is meant to reach decision-makers without a game of telephone.

What Labs will ship first, and when, Xbox did not say — no titles, no dates, no demo was attached to the announcement, and anyone promising you a product list today is guessing. What exists is a mandate, a leader and a metric: game makers, engineers and scientists, building in public, judged on whether players care. For an industry that usually announces the future in cinematic trailers, an experiment announced in plain text, aimed at the strangest and fastest-moving corner of gaming right now, is its own kind of statement. We will be watching what comes out of it in our games section and the news feed.
