Xbox Rolls Out 27 Games October 19-23, Headlined by Modern Warfare 4

Xbox Wire's week of October 19-23 brings 27 games to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC — from Shoresy: Legends of the North on Monday to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Friday and Final Fantasy Resonance in between — with Battlefield 6 already waiting on Game Pass.

The Short Version

Some weeks on the release calendar have a headliner and some filler. The week of October 19 to 23 on Xbox has a headliner, a co-headliner, a hockey RPG about a team called the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs, and two dozen other games fighting for whatever hours are left. Xbox Wire's weekly schedule lists 27 releases across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC over five days — a slate that follows a 15-game week and lands in the middle of the busiest stretch of the gaming year. Nobody is playing all 27. The real question is which three or four earn the download, and this week, unusually, the subscription catalog gets a vote.

The anchors: a shooter war at the end of the week

Friday, October 23 is the day the whole week bends toward. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches that day at $69.99, closing a rollout that began with campaign early access for digital preorders on October 16 and continues with DMZ early access on October 20. It is the week's largest release by an enormous margin, and it arrives with a notable absence: unlike recent series entries, it is not launching into Game Pass, with its subscription arrival discussed in terms of holiday 2027 rather than launch day. Xbox Wire's own listing describes a darker campaign that opens with a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula and a Captain Price story running alongside it — and TrueAchievements' rundown of the week makes a point of reminding readers, in plain language, that this one isn't launching into Xbox Game Pass.

That reminder matters because of what subscribers already have. Battlefield 6 joined Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on October 13 via EA Play, arriving the same day as two day-one releases, the dungeon crawler Deep Dish Dungeon and the first-person soulslike Valor Mortis, as GameRant's confirmed-dates coverage documented. Battlefield 6 was, per Circana, the best-selling game in the United States through the end of 2025. So the week's shape is genuinely strange and genuinely interesting: the biggest new release of the week is a full-price purchase, while one of the biggest games of last year sits in the subscription library the whole week, ten days into its Game Pass run, waiting to absorb anyone whose wallet says no. Microsoft owns the publisher of the full-price game. Microsoft also runs the subscription. Both things are true, and players get to pick which Microsoft wins.

The co-headliner: Final Fantasy goes HD-2D

Wednesday, October 22 brings the week's most distinctive release: Final Fantasy Resonance, priced at $49.99 and built as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Square Enix is taking the Final Fantasy formula — airships, crystals, espers, moogles, the whole inheritance — and rendering it in HD-2D, the style that pairs pixel-art characters with three-dimensional environments. Xbox Wire's listing presents it as the first Final Fantasy to join the HD-2D lineup, and TrueAchievements flags it the same way. In a week dominated by shooters, a deliberately nostalgic RPG with a lower price tag and Play Anywhere support is the obvious counter-programming pick, and it would not be a surprise if it ends the week as the release people are still talking about in November.

The day-by-day shape of the week

Monday, October 19 opens with the week's most charming pitch: Shoresy: Legends of the North ($14.99), a fast-paced hockey RPG set in the Shoresy universe, where you create a skater, join the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs, and take on the Hockey Godz, with head-to-head play against friends. TrueAchievements' list also slots the open-world action-adventure DuneCrawl — sailing sandy seas atop a giant cannon-covered crustacean — into the week's opening days.

Tuesday, October 20 is the week's co-op and hidden-object pile-up. We Were Here Tomorrow sends two partners into a facility beneath the Antarctic ice to find a missing research team, a communication-first co-op adventure from a series built entirely on two players talking each other through puzzles. Elite Sports Gaming Football (ESG Football 27) offers an 11v11 Rec mode, cross-play between PlayStation and Xbox and a deeper progression system. Around them sit the puzzle game Candlemates — two enchanted candles, fire stones, matching braziers, limited moves — the first-person horror-shooter Hail to the Rainbow, and a trio of hidden-object collector's editions: Christmas Across America, Cruise Adventure: Hidden Journey and Family Journey: Hidden Across the World, the last with 60 scenes and 12 mini-games.

Wednesday, October 21 is the quietest day on the Xbox Wire count, led by CyberBot: Zero, a retro-styled 2D platformer about a robot hacking and jumping its way out of a corrupted mega-facility. Thursday, October 22, by contrast, is stacked underneath Final Fantasy Resonance: the co-op climbing hit Peak arrives on Xbox that day per TrueAchievements, alongside the four-player voice-driven co-op horror of Dreadway, the first-person roguelike Mortal Sin, the Protea VI exploration adventure Moadra, the detective mystery Entwined: Strings of Deception, the turn-based Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest, the graffiti puzzler Spray Trace and the cozy Tidy Up the Flower Shop.

Friday's pile-up around Modern Warfare 4 includes the retro FPS Darkenstein 3D, the two-player glass-carrying co-op platformer Carry the Glass, the zombie-apocalypse shop-management game The Walking Trade, the dieselpunk tactics of Empires Shall Fall, the horror sequel House 2, the psychological horror FIRE AND ASHES (set in a psychiatric hospital in 1977), the railway puzzler Railroad Swap, the ocean-cleaning co-op Seahorse Soap Patrol, the evolution adventure Omni Growth and the mech tactics of Vixen 357. Many of the week's titles carry Xbox Play Anywhere or Smart Delivery support, per the store listings summarized in Windows Report's day-by-day rundown of the Xbox Wire schedule.

How to play the week

The honest advice is triage. Subscribers should start where the value already is: Battlefield 6 is installed or installable right now, and Deep Dish Dungeon and Valor Mortis are sitting in the same catalog from the same October 13 drop. Buyers get one obvious full-price decision on Friday, and it is a real decision this year precisely because the subscription alternative is a game of Battlefield 6's size. In between, the week rewards the curious: a $14.99 hockey RPG on Monday, an HD-2D Final Fantasy on Wednesday, a co-op Antarctic mystery on Tuesday. Twenty-seven games is too many to play and exactly the right number to browse. That, more than any single launch, is what a week like this is for. For the shooter math in full, see Modern Warfare 4's Steam-topping early access and browse Previously's games coverage.
