Thomas Francis Barber — known professionally as Tom Francis — was born on June 29, 1999, in Colchester, England, and grew up in the Suffolk village of Thorpe Morieux. He came up the traditional British theatre way: youth theatre at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds, the local Voice Squad group, and then three years at the Arts Educational School (ArtsEd) in West London, graduating in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre. No shortcuts, no reality-show springboard — training, ensemble work, patience. It was the old path, and it was about to pay off in spectacular fashion.
His professional stage debut arrived in 2020 as Roger Davis in Rent at the Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester, directed by Luke Sheppard. Francis would reunite with Sheppard for his next leap: in March 2022 he took over the role of Romeo in & Juliet at the Shaftesbury Theatre, marking his West End debut. Between those gigs he performed as Claude in concert stagings of Hair at the London Palladium in 2021, stepping in for Jordan Luke Gage. He was building the classic résumé of a young British musical-theatre leading man — strong voice, stronger work ethic, a career measured in eight-show weeks. Then Jamie Lloyd called.
Lloyd, the most in-demand theatre director of his generation, was mounting a radical, stripped-back revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard at the Savoy Theatre — all exposed scaffolding, live video feeds, and the audience watching the cast watch themselves. He needed a Joe Gillis: the broke screenwriter who falls into the clutches of faded silent-film star Norma Desmond, a role that demands matinee-idol looks, a rock-solid tenor, and the acting chops to play a man slowly realizing he's the mark. Francis, opposite Nicole Scherzinger's volcanic Norma, was revelatory. His Joe was sexy, funny, doomed — and he sold the show's signature moment night after night: a six-minute sequence at the top of Act Two in which Joe exits the theatre entirely and sings the title number while walking through the streets outside, filmed live and projected back to the audience, before striding back onstage to finish the song. In the West End he walked outside the Savoy; on Broadway, he walked through Shubert Alley, past real New York crowds who'd gather to watch.
The awards followed like a coronation. Francis won the 2024 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical — and performed at the ceremony, proving the win wasn't a fluke. When the production transferred to Broadway's St. James Theatre in the fall of 2024, Francis made his Broadway debut and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, along with Drama Desk and Drama League nominations, a Theatre World Award, and a Clive Barnes Award. He led a company that included Scherzinger (who won the Tony for Best Actress), Grace Hodgett Young as Betty Schaefer, and David Thaxton as Max. In November 2024 he briefly paused performances with a vocal cord injury — the occupational hazard of singing a Lloyd Webber score eight times a week while walking through Manhattan traffic. He played his final performance on July 6, 2025, departing for a previously announced commitment; Pierre Marais took over for the run's final two weeks before the production closed on July 20.
What came next was the classic Broadway-breakout playbook, executed at speed. Francis made his television debut as Clayton in the fifth and final season of Netflix's You (2025), and his film debut in Noah Baumbach's ensemble comedy Jay Kelly (2025), acting opposite George Clooney and Adam Sandler. In 2026, he auditioned to play James Bond in the franchise's 26th film — a sign of just how seriously the industry is taking him. The Sunset Blvd. moment made Tom Francis a name on both sides of the Atlantic; the question now is what he does with it. If the discipline of that climb is any indication, the stage will always be home — but the screen is clearly next.
Our read on Tom Francis.
Tom Francis did what every musical theater actor dreams of: he took on one of the great roles — Joe Gillis in Sunset Blvd. — and made it his own. His performance in Jamie Lloyd's stripped-back West End revival won him the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, the kind of coronation that turns a working actor into a name.
The Broadway transfer followed, because that's what happens when you win an Olivier for a legendary part. Francis came up through the British stage system the traditional way — training, ensemble work, patience — and the Sunset Blvd. moment was the payoff: proof that the old path still works when the talent is real.
