About Tom

Thomas Anthony Hollander was born on August 25, 1967, in Oxford, England. He was educated at Abingdon School and Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he threw himself into the university's legendary theatre scene — a member of the Footlights and president of the Marlowe Society, the kind of undergraduate résumé that telegraphs a serious stage actor in the making. He made good on it immediately: in 1992, at just 24, he won the Ian Charleson Award for his performance as Witwoud in The Way of the World at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, one of British theatre's most prestigious prizes for young classical actors. The message was clear: here was a performer of uncommon precision, the kind who could make Restoration comedy feel alive.

Hollander spent the 1990s building the classical foundation — the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Chekhov and Shakespeare — before film and television claimed him. His screen career became a masterclass in specificity: the actor directors cast when they need someone brilliant, exact, and slightly dangerous. He was in Robert Altman's Gosford Park (2001), the codebreaking drama Enigma (2001), and Pride & Prejudice (2005) as the gloriously obsequious Mr. Collins. Then came the role that made him famous on both sides of the Atlantic: Cutler Beckett in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) and At World's End (2007). As the cold, wigged, East India Company chairman, Hollander played the rare blockbuster villain who never raised his voice — all stillness and menace, sipping tea while ordering executions. It's one of the great quiet performances in a loud franchise.

But Hollander was never just a character actor for hire — he was also a writer and a leading man. With James Wood, he co-created and starred in the BBC sitcom Rev. (2010–2014) as the Reverend Adam Smallbone, a well-meaning inner-city vicar drowning in doubt, bureaucracy, and his own congregation. The show was a critical darling and won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Sitcom in 2011, with Hollander's performance — funny, sad, and humane — at its center. He was equally magnetic in prestige drama: as the weaselly spin doctor Simon Foster in Armando Iannucci's In the Loop (2009), as the sleazy playwright Harry Chapman in About Time (2013), and above all as Major Lance "Corky" Corkoran in the BBC's The Night Manager (2016), the venal arms-dealer's fixer whose every smile curdled. That performance won him the BAFTA Television Award for Best Supporting Actor.

The 2020s brought him his widest audience yet. In The White Lotus season 2 (2022), he played Quentin, the expat charmer whose silk suits and easy laughter concealed something far darker — a scene-stealing turn in the season's most unsettling storyline. He was Jim Beach, Queen's steady-handed manager, in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018); he played George V in both The Lost Prince (2003) and The King's Man (2021); and in 2024 he took on Truman Capote in Ryan Murphy's Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, a performance of glittering cruelty that earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series. His voice work — Family Guy, American Dad!, animated features on both sides of the Atlantic — shows the same range in miniature.

And then there's the other Tom. Hollander has cheerfully owned the confusion with Tom Holland, the Spider-Man star three decades his junior — including the famous story, told on late-night television, of being mistakenly sent Tom Holland's seven-figure Avengers box-office bonus slip. ("I've never been so close to a million pounds," he joked.) It's a perfect Hollander anecdote: self-deprecating, precise, and very funny. Because for all the mistaken identity, there is no mistaking what Tom Hollander is — one of the finest actors of his generation, a stage-trained chameleon who can play kings and creeps, vicars and villains, and make every one of them feel like the only person in the room.

Directors keep coming back to him because he makes everyone around him better — the co-star who gets the laugh, the scene partner who gets the better of the exchange. Whether he's playing a king, a vicar, a fixer, or a queen's confidant, Hollander brings the same conservatory discipline to a Marvel-scale blockbuster that he brought to the Lyric Hammersmith at twenty-four. That, more than any single role, is the throughline: total commitment, zero vanity, and a sense that the funniest man in the room is usually the smartest one too.

The Previously take

Our read on Tom Hollander.

Tom Hollander is the actor directors cast when they need someone brilliant, specific, and slightly dangerous. As Cutler Beckett in the Pirates of the Caribbean films he was the rare blockbuster villain who never raised his voice — all cold East India Company menace in a perfect wig. It's a masterclass in stillness.

The rest of the résumé is just as sharp: the lead of the beloved sitcom Rev., the spin doctor in In the Loop, and a scene-stealing turn in The White Lotus's second season. Hollander's a stage-trained chameleon — no, not that Tom; the other one, and he's every bit as good.
