The Story

Inter Miami are the franchise the whole world watches — David Beckham's team, and then Lionel Messi's. Founded in 2018 and debuting in 2020, they were Beckham's decade-long dream realized: the pink and black, the herons, the Miami glamour. The early years were pure chaos — bad rosters, coaching carousels, the beautiful DRV PNK Stadium rising in Fort Lauderdale.

Then July 2023: Lionel Messi — the greatest player ever — chose Miami. What followed was the most transformative signing in American sports history: the Leagues Cup triumph weeks after his arrival, the sold-out stadiums, the Apple TV subscriptions, the kids in Messi jerseys from Miami to Manila. Inter Miami became the most-watched club in the country overnight.

The 2024 Supporters' Shield — the best regular season in MLS history, 74 points — proved it wasn't just a show: Messi, Busquets, Alba, and Suarez playing football from another planet. The playoff stumble that followed was the reminder that MLS is never simple. But the project is undeniable: Miami is building a superclub, with the new Miami Freedom Park on the way.

The Messi Inter Miami (2023-present) are the league's global phenomenon: the 2023 Leagues Cup (the Messi arrival, the 10-goal tournament), the 2024 Supporters' Shield (the 74-point record, the greatest regular season ever) — the Messi brilliance (the 2024 MVP, the ageless magic), the Suarez-Alba-Busquets reunion, the most talented team ever assembled in MLS. The 2024 playoff upset (the Atlanta loss, the ninth seed's miracle) was the shock; the 2025 Club World Cup (the global stage) the new frontier. Chase Stadium's Fort Lauderdale crowd brings the 2023-24 memory: the pink, the global spotlight, the belief that the Messi era always gives you a chance. The Florida wars with Orlando define the summer. What Inter Miami are now is the phenomenon — the Messi twilight the present, the 2024 Shield the proof, and the MLS Cup the only thing missing. In Miami, the world watches, and the Herons' era is the league's biggest stage.

The 2020 inaugural season (the the the dream's start) is the club's founding lore. The 2023 Leagues Cup (the the arrival) changed everything. In Miami, the 2023 Cup the heritage, and the 2024 Shield the coronation.

What defines Inter Miami is the audacity: Beckham's vision, Messi's magic, and a franchise that went from expansion afterthought to global phenomenon in one summer. No MLS Cup yet — but in Miami, the Herons are already the biggest story in American soccer.

Where They Stand

The defending champions are chasing history — and doing it in a brand-new home. Inter Miami opened Nu Stadium at Miami Freedom Park on April 4, 2026, and the title defense has been pure Herons: third in the East at 12-4-9, a league-high 61 goals scored, and Lionel Messi leading the Golden Boot race with 19. The 3-1 MLS Cup triumph over Vancouver last December — Messi's 47th career trophy — confirmed what the 2024 Shield had suggested: this is the league's superteam.

It's been turbulent behind the scenes. Javier Mascherano resigned in April, Guillermo Hoyos held the interim role, and Kily González took over in late August — the third coach of the calendar year. But Miami's talent is overwhelming: Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Tadeo Allende form the most feared attack in MLS history. Seven games remain, including a Decision Day date with Charlotte at Nu Stadium. Back-to-back Cups would cement this as the greatest team MLS has ever seen.

Club History

The Story So Far

Inter Miami was David Beckham's dream made real. Announced in 2018 and taking the field in 2020, the club spent its first three seasons as an expensive disappointment — big names, bigger payroll, no playoffs. Phil Neville's tenure ended in 2023 with the Herons bottom of the East, and the project looked like a cautionary tale about buying fame instead of building a team.

Then Lionel Messi happened. On July 21, 2023, the greatest player of all time chose Miami — and American soccer changed overnight. Messi's debut month delivered the Leagues Cup (the club's first trophy), sold-out stadiums everywhere, and a global spotlight MLS had never known. Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba followed, reuniting Barcelona's legendary core in pink.

Tata Martino's 2024 side turned stardust into dominance: a record 74-point Supporters' Shield season. But the playoffs brought heartbreak — ninth-seeded Atlanta stunned Miami in Round One, one of the great upsets in league history. The response was emphatic: under Javier Mascherano, Miami roared through the 2025 playoffs, with Messi (playoff MVP) and Tadeo Allende's record nine postseason goals powering a 3-1 MLS Cup final win over Vancouver.

Now the Herons play in their permanent home — the $1 billion Miami Freedom Park, opened April 2026 — with a star above the badge and Messi signed through 2028. Six seasons, two trophies, and the undisputed center of the soccer universe. The Beckham dream didn't just come true; it exceeded every imagining.
