The Story

Orlando City are the USL phenomenon that became an MLS institution. Born in the lower divisions in 2011, they drew crowds that shamed MLS teams — 20,000-plus in the third division — and purple-clad Orlando made expansion inevitable. They joined MLS in 2015 with Kaka — the Brazilian legend, the biggest signing in league history at the time — and the hype was enormous.

The early MLS years were a struggle: the Kaka era brought glamour but not wins, the coaching carousel spun, and the Lions were perennial underachievers. But the supporters never wavered — the Wall, the purple smoke, Exploria Stadium's roar — and the 2020 run to the MLS is Back final and the playoff breakthrough finally delivered hope.

The 2022 Open Cup triumph was the first major trophy: the Lions lifting silverware, the culmination of a decade's devotion. The Nani years brought the star power, the recent teams have been genuine contenders, and the rivalry with Atlanta and Miami gives the fixture list its edge. Orlando is a soccer city now, fully and finally.

The Pareja Orlando City (2020-present) are the East's most consistent contender: the 2024 52-point season (the conference finals run), the sustained excellence since — the Ojeda brilliance, the McGuire youth, the most stable project in the East. The 2022 Open Cup (the franchise's first trophy) is the history; the 2020 bubble run (the MLS is Back final) the memory. Inter&Co Stadium's Orlando crowd brings the 2022 memory and the theme-park energy: the Wall's roar, the 2024 playoff energy, the belief that the Lions always contend. The Florida wars with Miami define the summer. What Orlando City are now is a contender — the Pareja system the foundation, the 2024 run the proof, and the MLS Cup the missing piece. In Orlando, the Lions roar, and the Cup is the only thing missing.

The 2015 inaugural season (the 62,000-strong opener, the the arrival) is the club's founding lore. The 2022 Open Cup (the first trophy) is the heritage. In Orlando, the 2015 opener the standard, and the 2022 Cup the proof.

What defines Orlando City is the journey: from USL fairytale to MLS contender, powered by the most passionate fanbase in the Southeast. No MLS Cup yet — but in Orlando, the purple reign is just getting started.

Season Outlook

Where They Stand

Orlando is living through its strangest season. Óscar Pareja — the club's most successful coach ever — departed by mutual consent in March with the Lions bottom of the East, and assistant Martín Perelman has steadied the ship as interim. Through mid-September, Orlando sits sixth at 10-11-4: the attack scores (44 goals), but 56 allowed is the worst defensive record among East playoff teams. The turnaround from 30th overall to the top seven is remarkable — and fragile.

Nine games remain, and a home Round One series is genuinely in reach if the defense holds. Captain Robin Jansson leads a veteran group that reached the 2024 Eastern Conference final — this core knows November soccer. The winter brings the permanent coaching decision, but first there's a playoff race to win. For a club that waited so long to matter, every October game feels precious.

Club History

The Story So Far

Orlando City was the people's expansion team. Born in the USL in 2010, the Lions drew enormous crowds and won championships in the lower divisions before MLS came calling in 2015. The purple wall at the Citrus Bowl — 60,000 strong for the MLS opener — announced that Orlando was a soccer city, full stop.

The MLS beginning was rocky: three straight playoff misses, the Kaká era's glamour without results, and the growing pains of a club learning what it takes. The 2017 move to the purpose-built Orlando City Stadium (now Inter&Co Stadium) gave the Lions a permanent home with the league's most famous safe-standing supporters' section.

Óscar Pareja's arrival in 2020 changed everything. The Colombian built a resilient, talented side around Nani's star power, then Daryl Dike's emergence, then Facundo Torres's brilliance — delivering the 2022 U.S. Open Cup (the club's first trophy) and the 2024 run to the Eastern Conference final, the deepest playoff run in club history.

Pareja's March 2026 departure closed the most successful chapter the Lions have known. But the foundation — the stadium, the supporters, the purple identity — is permanent. Orlando knows what winning feels like now, and the fanbase expects the next coach to deliver more of it.
