The Liberty Flames are the program Jerry Falwell built — the evangelical school's team, the FBS independent that became a Conference USA power. The Hugh Freeze era (2019-22) was the breakthrough: the 2020 10-win season (the top-25 ranking), the Cure Bowl wins, and the program's arrival as a national story.
The 2023 season was the peak: 13-0, the CUSA title, the Fiesta Bowl trip — the Group of Five's New Year's Six representative. Kaidon Salter's brilliance, the Jamey Chadwell coaching, and the program's instant credibility: Liberty proved the independents could play with anyone.
Williams Stadium's 25,000-strong setting, the Lynchburg, Virginia, devotion, the Flames' faith-based identity: Liberty football is the evangelical school's team, and the mission is bigger than wins. The program's NFL pipeline (the quarterbacks, the receivers) is growing.
The Chadwell Liberty (2023-present) are the CUSA's new power: the 2023 13-1 season (the CUSA title, the Fiesta Bowl — the program's arrival), the 2024 8-4 season (the bowl berth) — the the quarterback's brilliance — was the peak. The 2025 season (the the sustained success) is the present. The 2020-22 Freeze era (the 10-win seasons) is the recent history. Williams Stadium's Lynchburg crowd brings the 2023 memory: the 25,000-strong, the 2023 Fiesta Bowl, the belief that Liberty belongs. The CUSA wars define the fall. What Liberty are now is a program arrived — the Chadwell culture the foundation, the 2023 Fiesta Bowl the proof, and the 2023 standard the goal. In Lynchburg, the 2023 season is the new heritage, and the Flames' era has just begun.
The 2014 FCS playoff run (the program's arrival) is the founding lore. The 2020 10-1 season (the Cure Bowl win, the program's best) is the heritage. The 2022 8-5 season (the Boca Raton Bowl win) is the modern lore. The 2023 13-1 season (the Fiesta Bowl, the program's arrival as a power) is the new soul. In Lynchburg, the 2023 Fiesta Bowl the standard. The 2024 8-4 season (the bowl berth) is the recent hope. The 2025 season (the sustained success) is the present. The 2025 Chadwell era (the CUSA defense) is the present tense.
What defines Liberty is the mission: the 2023 Fiesta Bowl, the Freeze-Chadwell success, and a program that plays for something bigger. In Lynchburg, the Flames are the faithful's team — and the fire keeps burning.
