The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are the program of the 2002 Division I-AA national championship — the only one in school history — and the FBS air raid. The Jack Harbaugh 2002 title (the championship-game win) was the peak: Bowling Green, Kentucky, celebrating like the commonwealth only can.
The Jeff Brohm era (2014-16) was the modern fireworks: the 2015-16 Conference USA titles (the 12-win seasons), Brandon Doughty's record passing, and the program as the Group of Five's most exciting. The 2021 9-win season (the Boca Raton Bowl win) was the Tyson Helton encore.
The Middle Tennessee rivalry (100 Miles of Hate) is the everything: the annual war, all Tennessee-Kentucky hatred. Houchens-Smith Stadium's 22,000-strong roar, the Bowling Green devotion, the red-and-white: Hilltopper football is the commonwealth's team.
The Helton Western Kentucky (2019-present) are the CUSA's model of offense: the 2024 8-5 season (the Boca Raton Bowl), the 2023 8-5 season (the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl win) — the the quarterback's growth — was the arrival. The 2021 9-5 season (the Boca Raton Bowl win, the the the brilliance) is the recent history. Houchens-Smith Stadium's Bowling Green crowd brings the 2021 memory: the 22,000-strong, the 2021 roar, the belief that the Hilltoppers always fight. The 100 Miles of Hate (the Middle Tennessee rivalry) defines the fall. What Western Kentucky are now is a program stable — the Helton culture the foundation, the 2023-24 bowls the proof, and the 2021 standard the goal. In Bowling Green, the 2021 magic is the fuel, and the Air Raid endures.
The 2002 Division I-AA national championship (the program's only title) is the soul. The 2015 12-2 season (the CUSA title, the Miami Beach Bowl win) and the 2016 11-3 season (the CUSA title repeat, the Boca Raton Bowl win) are the modern heritage. The 2021 9-5 season (the Boca Raton Bowl win) is the recent memory. In Bowling Green, the 2015 season the standard. The 2024 8-5 season (the Boca Raton Bowl) is the recent hope. The 2025 season (the sustained success) is the present. The 2025 Helton era (the CUSA race) is the present tense.
What defines Western Kentucky is the air raid: the 2002 title, the Brohm fireworks, and a program that's always one great quarterback from the CUSA crown. In Bowling Green, the Hilltoppers are the hill's team — and the red towel waves.
