The Story

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen in action at the new Highmark Stadium
Josh Allen is the early MVP favorite as the 3-0 Bills top the national power rankings.

The Buffalo Bills are the only franchise in NFL history to reach four straight Super Bowls — and the only one to lose four straight Super Bowls. That sentence contains the entire soul of this team: the 1990-93 Bills, Jim Kelly's no-huddle K-Gun offense, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, Bruce Smith and Cornelius Bennett under Marv Levy, were one of the great teams ever assembled, and they have nothing to show for it but scars. Wide Right. The 1990 AFL champions of 1964 and '65 deserve their due too, but it's the four falls that define Buffalo football.

What the losing built, though, is the greatest fan culture in American sports. Bills Mafia — the table-breaking, charity-donating, blizzard-defying faithful of Western New York — turned heartbreak into identity. Ralph Wilson's franchise, playing in the open-air cold of Highmark Stadium, became the team America roots for precisely because it has suffered more beautifully than anyone.

The drought that followed was its own epic: 17 straight seasons without a playoff berth from 2000 to 2016, the longest in North American pro sports at the time. Then the Josh Allen era detonated — the rocket-armed quarterback who hurdles linebackers, the Stefon Diggs years, the 13-seconds heartbreak against Kansas City in the 2021 playoffs, a rivalry with the Chiefs that has become the AFC's main event. Buffalo is all-in, every January, and the whole country watches.

What defines the Bills is the refusal to be pitied. Kelly's 12, Thomas's 34, Smith's 78 hang retired as monuments to the teams that kept getting up. Four straight Super Bowls, zero trophies, and a fan base that wouldn't trade the ride. Buffalo doesn't do moral victories — but it does loyalty better than anyone, and one of these Januarys, the tables are getting jumped through in celebration.

What is happening now: the Bills are 3-0, they play in the NFL’s newest palace, and they have the best player on the planet. Buffalo opened the new Highmark Stadium with the AFC’s most complete team under first-year head coach Joe Brady — the franchise’s fourth 3-0 start since 2020. Week 3 was the character test: a 24-16 win over the Chargers in which the Bills committed five turnovers and still controlled the fourth quarter. Josh Allen threw for 204 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble, then answered the only way he knows how — two more rushing touchdowns, making him the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to score multiple rushing touchdowns in three straight games. Through three weeks Allen has 786 passing yards (ninth in the league), five passing scores and a 65.1 completion rate — and a league-leading six rushing touchdowns. He was the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2 after three touchdown passes and two rushing scores against Detroit, and he sits atop MVP odds boards everywhere. The supporting cast is producing too: James Cook is averaging 6.0 yards a carry (second in the NFL) after a 154-yard day against Los Angeles, Dalton Kincaid ranks seventh among tight ends with 263 receiving yards, and Ty Johnson’s return from a hamstring injury could not have been timed better — his 43-yard catch-and-run on fourth down kept the go-ahead drive alive, and Allen called him the best third-down back in football. The roster is not without dents: running back Ray Davis (hamstring) and cornerback Christian Benford are concerns, and lineman T.J. Sanders is doubtful after an appendectomy. But Allen practiced without a designation and is a full go for Sunday’s first division test, the 1-2 Patriots, with Buffalo installed as roughly a touchdown favorite. Ranked No. 1 by most national outlets and the Super Bowl favorite at several sportsbooks, the Bills are no longer chasing the season. The season is chasing them.
