The Story

The Jets are the franchise of the Guarantee — Joe Namath's 1969 promise, the most famous boast in sports history, and the Super Bowl III upset that made the AFL legitimate. Founded in 1960 as the Titans, they were Broadway Joe's team: the fur coats, the nightlife, the swagger — and the 16-7 win over the mighty Colts, the game that changed football forever.

The decades since have been the punchline: the longest championship drought in the city's sports, the Butt Fumble (Mark Sanchez's Thanksgiving faceplant, the most replayed blooper ever), the endless quarterback carousel, the coach firings, the dysfunction. The Jets became the league's great cautionary tale — the team that finds new ways to lose, in the biggest market, under the brightest lights.

The bright spots are cult history: the 1980s Sack Exchange, the 1998 Parcells near-miss, the Rex Ryan back-to-back AFC Championship trips (2009-10), the Revis Island dominance. But the Super Bowl hasn't returned since Namath, and the suffering has become the identity: the J-E-T-S chant, the faithful, the gallows humor.

The post-Rodgers Jets (2024-present) are the league's most cursed franchise: the 2023 Rodgers Achilles (the four-snap season), the 2024 5-12 collapse (the Saleh firing, the the lost year), and the 2025 Glenn arrival (the new coach, the the fresh start) — the the 2025 quarterback (the the reclamation project), the new direction. The 2022 7-10 tease (the the quarterback's collapse) was the bridge; the 2023-24 Rodgers disaster the scar. The 1968 Super Bowl III title (the Namath guarantee) is the ancient history. MetLife Stadium's East Rutherford crowd brings the 2010-11 memory: the back-to-back AFC title games, the belief that the Jets always tease. The AFC East wars define the fall. What the Jets are now is a franchise in reset — the Glenn-Fields bet the hope, the Rodgers disaster the scar, and the 1968 standard the goal. In New York, the 2024 collapse was rock bottom, and the next era starts with the coach and the reclamation.

The 1968 Super Bowl III upset (the Namath guarantee, the 16-7 shocker over Baltimore) is the franchise's soul. The 2010-11 back-to-back AFC title games (the Sanchez-Ryan near-misses) are the modern lore. In New York, the 1968 guarantee the heritage, and the drought the weight.

What defines the Jets is the wait: one Super Bowl in 1969, and nearly sixty years of wandering since. In New York, the Jets are the lovable losers — the team the city can't quit, and the guarantee that still echoes: the next one is coming, someday.
