There are rivalry games, and then there is the Third Saturday in October. Alabama and Tennessee meet again today at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, in the latest edition of one of college football's defining fixtures, and this year's version comes with more than cigars on the line. Both teams are 5-1. Both have already lost once in conference-adjacent heavyweight fights. The winner leaves Knoxville with a quality win and a clear path into November. The loser leaves with two losses before Halloween and a very tricky slate ahead, according to Knox News, which framed the stakes in exactly those terms in its game-day coverage.
The matchup, the rankings and how to watch
According to the USA Today Network's Vols Wire, No. 7 Alabama (5-1, 3-1 SEC) plays at No. 14 Tennessee (5-1, 2-1 SEC) today, with kickoff slated for 3:30 p.m. ET, and ABC televising the game. Those rankings are from the US LBM Coaches Poll, the poll this article uses throughout: according to Roll Tide Wire, Alabama is No. 6 in the AP Top 25 and No. 7 in the Coaches Poll, while Tennessee is No. 14. According to Knox News, Sean McDonough and Greg McElroy will call the game from the booth at Neyland Stadium, with Katie George reporting from the sidelines, and streaming options include Fubo and the ESPN app.
According to Sports Illustrated's game-central rundown, Neyland Stadium holds 101,915, and according to Knox News the game is a sellout. That building has not been kind to Alabama lately, and everybody on both sidelines knows it. Across the country, College GameDay is in Provo for another of the day’s ranked showdowns.

The recent history: home is everything
This rivalry has always run in streaks, but the recent pattern is unusually rigid. According to Roll Tide Wire, the teams have split the last four matchups, with Alabama winning in Tuscaloosa in 2023 and 2025 and Tennessee winning at Neyland in 2022 and 2024, while Alabama has still won 17 of the last 19 meetings since 2007. According to USA Today's Sportsbook Wire, the home team has won and covered in each of the past five meetings, and the last road win in the series came in 2020.
The Knoxville chapters are the ones Alabama has to confront today. According to Roll Tide Wire, Tennessee won a 52-49 classic at Neyland in 2022 and then won 24-17 there in 2024, with Alabama ranked higher on both trips. According to Sportsbook Wire, Alabama answered last season with a 37-20 win in Tuscaloosa on October 18, 2025. So the pattern is set and simple: hold serve at home, or be the team that finally breaks the pattern. Alabama has not won in Knoxville since 2020, according to the Tuscaloosa News. And at the end of it all, according to Knox News, comes the tradition that gives this rivalry its signature image: the winning team lights up cigars to celebrate, a custom that dates back to the 1960s, according to Sportsbook Wire.
Alabama's problem: a short-handed offense in a loud building
Alabama arrives off a wound. According to Roll Tide Wire, the Crimson Tide are coming off a 20-17 loss to Georgia, in which Georgia held quarterback Keelon Russell to 185 yards and a touchdown on 16 of 30 passing, while freshman Trae'shawn Brown ran for 90 yards on nine carries. According to The Spread's preview, Russell's season line remains one of the best in the sport, with 1,599 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions through six games, and Georgia's win was the only time all season Alabama has been held under 45 points before that standard slipped. The question today is whether that was a one-game blueprint or a real vulnerability.
The availability news has not helped. According to Knox News, wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams is out, and he leads the team with 23 receptions, 415 yards and four touchdowns. According to Vols Wire's injury report, Alabama also listed starting center Racin Delgatty as out on Friday, alongside defensive lineman Terrance Green and several others. According to Sports Illustrated, sophomore Mal Waldrep is in line to step in at center, and its keys to the game ask directly who steps up at wide receiver for Russell with Coleman-Williams officially out. A first start at center, in a stadium this loud, against a Tennessee defensive front led by tackle Xavier Gilliam is not a gentle assignment: according to Knox News, Tennessee's defense is paced by Gilliam and leads the nation in sacks.
That matchup, Alabama's reshuffled interior line against the nation's sack leaders, may decide the game before the skill players get a say. If Russell gets time, Alabama's offense is built to score in bunches. If Tennessee's front lives in the backfield, Neyland becomes the kind of environment where road favorites unravel.
Tennessee's problem: can the offense keep up?
Tennessee's path is narrower and more specific. According to Roll Tide Wire, the Volunteers came from behind to beat Arkansas 24-17 last week, with DeSean Bishop rushing for 138 yards on 19 carries and scoring the game-winning touchdown with 1:57 to play, while George MacIntyre, making his first career start at quarterback, completed 18 of 29 passes for 247 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
According to Knox News, MacIntyre is expected to start again today, with freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon now available after being removed from the availability report; Brandon started Tennessee's first five games before a right shoulder injury in the loss to Texas on September 26. According to The Spread, Bishop's season production gives Tennessee its clearest route: he has 678 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, and Tennessee's ground game is the engine while its passing numbers lag. According to Athlon Sports, that is the Volunteers' formula today: run Bishop, let a much-improved defense under coordinator Jim Knowles and a front led by Gilliam create havoc, and keep Russell from running away with the game.
The tension is obvious. Tennessee's defense, which according to Sportsbook Wire has allowed 20 or fewer points in four straight games, can keep this close. Whether Tennessee's offense can score enough, especially if it falls behind and has to throw, is the question that has followed the Volunteers through their SEC schedule. Our Saturday preview of the weekend's biggest college football showdowns puts this game in the context of a crowded Week 7 slate.
The line, and what the afternoon decides
The market respects Alabama's ceiling more than Neyland's recent history. According to Knox News, with odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Friday, October 16, Alabama is a 7.5-point favorite, with an over/under of 50.5 points and a money line of Alabama minus-325 to Tennessee plus-260. Lines move, and that number is a snapshot, not a promise. Notably, according to Athlon Sports, its preview panel still landed on a close Alabama win, 27-20, even while noting Tennessee's two straight home wins in the series and the havoc Gilliam's front could create.
By tonight, one of these teams will be smoking the cigars, and the other will be doing arithmetic. A second loss does not end a season in the expanded playoff era, but it removes every margin: one more bad Saturday in November and the conversation is over. A win, especially a road win in Knoxville or a home win over Alabama, becomes the result the whole resume leans on. That is what the Third Saturday in October means this year. It has always been about pride, history and smoke hanging over the field. Today it is also, very plainly, about survival. The full Saturday picture is in our Saturday showdowns roundup.
