Guardians and Rays Open the ALCS Tonight — Two Small Payrolls, One Trip to the World Series

Cleveland ripped off three straight wins to bury the White Sox, striking out a record 21 in the clincher. Tampa Bay swept the Yankees and has been waiting. First pitch is tonight at Tropicana Field.

Two days ago the Guardians were dead. Down 0-2 in the division series, headed home, facing a White Sox team that had won its first four postseason games and looked like the story of October. Then Cleveland's pitching staff did something no staff has ever done: struck out 21 batters in a nine-inning postseason game, a 2-0 win Saturday night that completed one of the great comebacks in recent playoff history and sent the Guardians to the ALCS. Tonight they open against the Rays at Tropicana Field, and the winner gets four wins from the World Series.

01 Williams Was Unhittable When It Mattered

Gavin Williams took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on Saturday, two days after saving Game 4 in his first career relief appearance — making him just the third pitcher in postseason history to get the last out of one game and start the next with his team facing elimination in both. His 12 strikeouts tied Cleveland's franchise record for a postseason game, and he generated 22 swings and misses. His 24 strikeouts across three games in the series tied for the second-most ever in a best-of-five. When Kyle Teel finally looped a single to right with two outs in the sixth and a walk loaded the bases, Erik Sabrowski came on and struck out Munetaka Murakami on a foul tip to kill the threat, per the AP.

Then the bullpen did the rest. Hunter Gaddis got four outs, and Cade Smith closed it with his first career five-out save, striking out the side in the ninth — blowing a fastball by Tristan Peters for the final out as Progressive Field erupted. The White Sox managed three hits all night, put nine balls in play, and struck out 75 times in the series, a record for a five-game set. "It was less about chase and more about being attacked in the zone and swing and miss in the zone," White Sox manager Will Venable said. "Just didn't have what it would have took to move some balls forward there."

02 Ramírez's Homer Defied Physics

The only runs of the clincher came in the fourth, when Steven Kwan led off with a single and José Ramírez — who had come alive in the two games in Chicago — golfed a knuckle-curve from Sean Burke down the right-field line for a two-run homer. The pitch was 0.74 feet above the ground when Ramírez made contact, according to MLB Statcast: the lowest pitch hit for a postseason home run since tracking began in 2008, and the lowest Ramírez has ever homered on in his 14-year career. It was his second straight game with a homer, and it was all the offense Cleveland's arms needed.

"I'd say that the confidence that we have in this group has been really tested and refined over the course of the last two years," closer Cade Smith said. "As a group, we've dealt with some adversity and seen us come out on the other side of that and had success in spite of that. And that builds a quiet foundation of confidence to play from."

03 The Moneyball ALCS

Here's what makes this series fascinating beyond the baseball: it's a matchup of the two smallest payrolls left standing. Cleveland opened the season with the lowest payroll in the majors; the Rays were 26th. Tampa Bay swept the Yankees — the sport's biggest spenders — in three games, and now the two clubs that do more with less meet with a pennant on the line. All that talk about a salary cap to promote competitive balance looks a little unnecessary this morning.

The Rays have been waiting since they finished off New York, and rest versus rust is the eternal October question. Cleveland, meanwhile, has played its best baseball with its back against the wall — three straight elimination-game wins, all on the strength of a pitching staff that just set a record. The Guardians haven't won a title since 1948, the longest drought in the sport, and haven't been to the World Series since 2016. Tampa Bay has never won one at all. Somebody's drought gets a lifeline starting tonight.

The Previously Take

October rewards the teams that miss bats, and right now nobody misses more bats than Cleveland. Twenty-one strikeouts in a clincher isn't a fluke — it's a staff peaking at the exact right moment. The Rays are rested, deep, and just swept the Yankees, so this is a genuine collision. But if Williams and this bullpen keep dealing like this, the small-payroll dream is very much alive.
