Atomix Is America's Only Seat at the World's Top Table

The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2026 list put exactly one United States restaurant in the top 50: New York's Atomix at No. 11 — and its chef, Junghyun 'JP' Park, also took the Chefs' Choice Award. Spain's Asador Etxebarri is the new No. 1.

The list is the receipt. Read the official 1–50 from top to bottom and the United States appears exactly once — at No. 11, attached to a 14-seat counter in Manhattan where every course arrives on bespoke ceramics with a card explaining where it came from.

The official list shows Atomix, the Korean tasting-counter restaurant in New York's NoMad district, at No. 11 on The 50 Best Restaurants 2026, announced at the awards ceremony in Lima, Peru. CNN reported that Atomix was the top American entry on the 2026 list and was named the Best Restaurant in North America. Eater reported the full list of winners on November 5, with Atomix the only restaurant from the United States inside the top 50.

The chefs' own vote

Atomix left Lima with two receipts, not one. The official awards page shows Junghyun “JP” Park, Atomix's chef, as the winner of the Estrella Damm Chefs' Choice Award 2026 — the programme's only peer-voted honour, decided by the chefs themselves. CNN reported that Park was honoured with the Chef's Choice Award and praised for providing a “window into a culture.”

That second prize is the one cooks talk about differently. A ranking can be argued with. A vote from the people who run the other kitchens on the list is harder to wave away, and it landed on a chef whose whole project is translation: Korean heritage, Korean ingredients and Korean memory, rebuilt course by course for a room in New York.

A counter, not a dining room

The official Atomix profile describes a restaurant built around restraint: an understated exterior on East 30th Street, a bar on the ground floor, and the main 14-seat U-shaped counter in the basement. Atomix is the flagship of Ellia Park, who runs the business, and her husband JP Park, who runs the kitchen. The official profile shows a well-paced, multi-course tasting menu of dishes rooted in Korean cooking, each one served in bespoke ceramics and accompanied by an explanatory card detailing its ingredients, origin and inspiration.

That is the luxury here, and it is worth naming plainly. It is not chandeliers or a wine list the size of a phone book. It is fourteen seats, a chef cooking a few feet from the guest, ceramics commissioned for the food they will hold, and a card that treats the person eating as someone who wants to understand what is in front of them. Connoisseurship, served quietly.

The top of the list

The official list shows Asador Etxebarri, in Atxondo in Spain's Basque Country, at No. 1 for 2026, up from No. 2 last year. CNN reported that Etxebarri is a destination restaurant revered for its grilling technique, and that its chef, Bittor Arguinzoniz, said in remarks after winning that the prize was “a real honor.” Eater reported Gaggan in Bangkok at No. 2 and Alchemist in Copenhagen at No. 3, completing a top three that spans fire, theatre and reinvention across three continents.

The Basque countryside around Axpe, Atxondo — stone houses, green fields and limestone hills near Asador Etxebarri, the new No. 1.

And then, a long drop

The official extended list shows how complete the shutout was. The next United States entry after Atomix does not appear until the 51–100 ranking, where the official list shows SingleThread, in Healdsburg, California, at No. 93 — the sole American name in that entire second fifty as well. One seat in the top 50, one name in the fifty after it: that is the whole American account at the world's top table this year.

None of that makes Atomix's night smaller. It makes it clearer. A country with thousands of ambitious dining rooms sent exactly one restaurant into the world's top 50, and that restaurant is a Korean counter in NoMad run by a husband-and-wife team — a room small enough that the chef can watch every plate land. The world's chefs looked at that room and voted for its chef themselves. America got one seat. Atomix made it count twice.
