Avatar: Seven Havens Is Streaming Now — and This Time the World Is Terrified of the Avatar

The first new Avatar series in 12 years premiered on Paramount+ today with three episodes. Pavi, a 9-year-old Earthbender, is the Avatar after Korra — in a world shattered by cataclysm that sees her as its destroyer, not its savior.

Twelve years. That is how long it has been since a new Avatar story aired on television, and the one that landed on Paramount+ this morning is playing a very different game than the Saturday-morning adventures you grew up on. Avatar: Seven Havens premiered today with the first three episodes of Book 1, and the headline swing is not the animation or even the new cast. It is the premise: this time, the world is terrified of the Avatar. Pavi, a 9-year-old Earthbender orphan, discovers she is the next Avatar after Korra in a civilization that survived an apocalypse by deciding the Avatar is the destroyer, not the savior. Try carrying that on your ninth birthday.

01 The Avatar is the villain now (sort of)

The setup is the boldest the franchise has ever attempted. Seven Havens takes place 225 years after the era of The Legend of Korra, in a world that has been devastated by a cataclysmic event. The old balance is gone. The portals between the human and spirit worlds were opened, Korra lost her connection to the past Avatars, and somewhere in the wreckage, humanity reorganized itself into the Seven Havens — civilization's last strongholds in a world overrun by spirits. And in that world, the Avatar is not a symbol of hope. She is a walking reminder of the end of everything, feared as the destroyer of humanity rather than its savior.

Pavi lives in the city of Ellora, an orphan who learns she is the next Avatar after Korra, and she is immediately on the run from human and spirit enemies alike. Book 1 is titled Survival, which tells you everything about the tone: this is an Avatar story where the hero's first problem is not mastering the elements, it is surviving the people who have already decided what she is. The official trailer — released September 10 — leaned all the way into the apocalyptic imagery, and the early-release stills show a world that is all scorched palettes and looming spirit architecture. It is darker than anything the franchise has done, and deliberately so.

02 The twin twist

Here is the detail that broke the fandom when the first trailer dropped: Pavi has a long-lost twin sister, Nisha — billed as a twin Avatar herself. In twenty years of Avatar storytelling — two series, comics, novels — there has never been an Avatar with a twin, and the show is treating it as the central mystery of the series. What does it mean for the Avatar spirit when there are two of them? Does Nisha bend? Why were they separated? The show is not answering yet, and honestly, good. A mystery box only works if you trust the people holding the box, and the people holding this one are the two guys who invented it.

The character designs are already doing a lot of quiet storytelling. In the artwork reveal, Pavi appears as a young amputee — a first for an Avatar protagonist, and a choice the creators have not made a big press-release moment out of, which makes it land harder. She is joined on the road by Geet, a cat monkey voiced by the great Dee Bradley Baker (because an Avatar series without Dee Bradley Baker voicing a weird animal would feel like a clerical error), plus her mentor and friend Jae, an Airbender. The gang is small, the world is enormous, and the mission — uncover their origins, save the Seven Havens before they collapse — is appropriately huge.

03 The cast and the crew

The voice cast is led by newcomer Saheli Khan as Pavi, with Aishu Devan as Nisha. Around them: Major Curda as Jae, Akshay Khanna as Karthik, Darren Barnet as Daemin, Sakina Jaffrey as Agam, Dianne Doan as Zi, and Baker pulling double duty as Geet and Ruhi, the twins' respective cat-monkeys. It is a young cast for a franchise that has historically leaned on veteran voice talent, and the early reviews single out Khan in particular for anchoring the whole thing.

Behind the camera is where the real reassurance lives. Original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are back as co-creators and executive producers — the first time both have run an Avatar series together since the original. Sehaj Sethi developed the series and serves as co-executive producer, animation director Ethan Spaulding (an Avatar veteran) executive produces, and Jeremy Zuckerman — who scored both previous series — is back composing. Animation comes from La Chouette Compagnie, a French studio, with art direction the creators say was influenced by the surrealist Möbius and 1990s anime. That lineage shows in the stills: painterly backgrounds, strange spirit designs, and a color story that is warmer than the premise sounds.

04 How we got here

The road to today has been long enough to write a book about. Nickelodeon launched Avatar Studios in February 2021 as a dedicated division for expanding the franchise, reuniting with DiMartino and Konietzko after their much-discussed 2020 departure from Netflix's live-action remake. Seven Havens was officially announced in February 2025 — timed to the original series' 20th anniversary — with a two-season, 26-episode order. It was originally expected in 2027, but at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026 the date got yanked forward to October 9, 2026 — the very day the animated film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender had originally been scheduled to release. Somewhere in Burbank, a scheduling whiteboard has a story to tell.

The franchise, meanwhile, has not been idle. The universe has grown into novels, comics, a live-orchestra world tour, and a massive streaming afterlife — both earlier series found enormous second audiences on Netflix, which is reportedly a big part of why Nickelodeon went all-in on Avatar Studios in the first place. A teaser debuted at the Comic-Con panel in July, the full trailer arrived September 10, and the fandom has been in a full sprint ever since. For everything else landing this weekend, our weekend streaming guide has the full rundown — and yes, the new Avatar is the headliner.

05 The early word is strong

Press got the first six episodes, and the verdicts are in: this is the real thing. Thetvcave's reviewer gave it 4 out of 5 and wrote that the series makes the Avatar universe feel enormous again, praising the world-building and Khan's anchoring performance — while noting the bending battles feel somewhat toned down compared to the franchise's most spectacular fights. The reviewer added that some of the show's bolder creative choices will generate discourse online (you know exactly what that means, and the review's advice is to let them yell). The reviewer's biggest complaint? Reaching the end of episode six and not being able to hit play on episode seven.

The numbers back it up. The series sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes across its first 8 reviews with a 7.6 average, and a 79 on Metacritic — "generally favorable," which for a legacy animated sequel is about as good as opening weekends get. The consensus forming around the show is that it understands the assignment: honor the franchise by moving it forward, not by trapping it in the past.

06 How to watch

Avatar: Seven Havens streams exclusively on Paramount+ — you will need a subscription, and yes, that means it lives under the same roof as the newly merged Paramount-Skydance-Warner Bros. giant. Book 1's 13 episodes roll out in four Friday batches: episodes 1–3 today, 4–6 on October 16, 7–9 on October 23, and the final four — 10 through 13 — on October 30 for the Book 1 finale. The full series is planned for 26 episodes across two books; Book 2 is ordered but has no premiere date yet. Pace yourself. October is going to be a long month in the best way.
