Green Flag on Day 4: Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Floats Toward Its Midweek Showstoppers

The 54th ExxonMobil Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is four days into its nine-day run, with pilots cleared to fly Tuesday morning and the week’s big set pieces — the Flight of the Nations Mass Ascension, the Special Shape Rodeo — still ahead.

The Short Version

Four days into nine, the Albuquerque sky has cooperated — and this morning it did so again. The green flag went up at Balloon Fiesta Park on Tuesday, the go-ahead signal from the 6 a.m. pilot briefing that balloons may launch for Day 4 of the 54th ExxonMobil Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The flag system is the festival’s weather nerve center: pilots gather at the Pilot Briefing Tower each dawn to read the winds, and green means fly, yellow means caution, red means grounded. Tuesday is green.

Day fourCoca-Cola Day, and the weather is behaving

Today’s program is a working pilot’s day: Dawn Patrol at 6:00 a.m., the 7:00 a.m. balloon launch, and an 8:00 a.m. Fly-In Competition, with the morning wrapping up around 11:00. There is no evening session today — Monday through Wednesday nights stay dark on the schedule, with the big nighttime shows landing Thursday through Saturday. That makes Tuesday a pure morning affair, and the meteorology is playing along: KRQE reports mostly quiet, mild weather continuing across New Mexico this week, with clear, calm conditions around the metro for Fiesta flying.

The first three days have given the organizers exactly the opening they wanted. Saturday’s opening Mass Ascension on October 3 “went off without a hitch,” per KRQE’s Day 1 photo gallery, and Sunday, October 4 dawned with a sunrise made for the postcard — KRQE’s Day 2 gallery caught the field filling under perfect skies. Monday brought the first shift toward the competitive side of ballooning, with a morning launch and a Fly-In Competition rather than a mass ascension. Four days in, not a weather cancellation in sight.

The theme“The Scenic Route”: 100 years of the Mother Road

This is the year of the double celebration. The 54th Fiesta runs October 3–11, 2026, and its official theme is “The Scenic Route” — a commemoration of Route 66 turning 100, the famous Mother Road that threads straight through Albuquerque. The Fiesta’s official March 2026 announcement framed it exactly that way, and the theme is woven through this year’s artwork and events. More than 500 balloons are expected to participate, including approximately 100 special-shape balloons — the flying elephants, bees and cartoon characters that have become as famous as the traditional envelopes.

The scale is what makes this the world’s largest balloon festival, an event the organizers describe as the most photographed on Earth. The launch field at Balloon Fiesta Park covers 78 acres, and visitors do something almost no other major event allows: they walk directly among the balloons and crews as the envelopes inflate. General admission is $20 per person per session (children 12 and under free), parking runs $20 per vehicle per session, and Park & Ride shuttles run $18–$33 per person booked in advance — with park admission included.

Still aheadThe week’s big set pieces

If you are choosing your days, the marquee remains the midweek and weekend mass ascensions. Wednesday, October 7 brings the Flight of the Nations Mass Ascension at 7:00 a.m. — the week’s centerpiece, with pilots from around the world launching in the signature two-wave format overseen by the launch directors known as “Zebras” for their striped shirts. Thursday and Friday, October 8–9, belong to the Special Shape Rodeo at 7:00 a.m., when the novelty fleet — animals, cartoon characters, a flying stagecoach and stranger shapes — inflates alongside the regular launch. And Friday is Kids’ Day, with goodie-bag distribution beginning at 4:30 a.m.

The evenings are where the week gets theatrical. Thursday and Friday nights bring the Special Shapes Glowdeo at 6:30 p.m., when tethered special shapes fire their burners in unison against the dark desert sky. Saturday, October 10 — ExxonMobil Day and the week’s busiest day — has a Mass Ascension at 7:00 a.m. and the Night Magic Glow at 6:30 p.m., with remote-control balloons, Team Fastrax skydiving, a drone light show around 7:45 p.m. and the AfterGlow fireworks near 8:00. Saturday is also Music Fiesta, with a live music festival starting at 4 p.m. inside the park. The nine days close Sunday, October 11 with Dawn Patrol at 6:00 a.m. and the Farewell Mass Ascension at 7:00 a.m. Our morning Southwest digest — Vegas, Phoenix and the rest of the region’s news.

The boxWhy Albuquerque can do this

The reason the world’s biggest balloon festival lives here is meteorological. Albuquerque sits in a pocket of geography — the Rio Grande Valley between the Sandia Mountains and the desert — that produces the famous Albuquerque Box: a layered wind pattern where currents blow in different directions at different altitudes. Skilled pilots can ride the box to take off and, impossibly, land back at nearly the same spot they launched from. Combine that with October’s high-desert weather — cool, calm dawns, blue skies, warm afternoons — and you get the nine-day window the Fiesta has relied on since the first event in 1972 launched with just 13 balloons.

For now, that window is open. The green flag is up, the Box is doing its work, and five more days — including the week’s signature ascensions — are still to come. In a city where October’s whole rhythm bends around the Fiesta, this morning’s launch was business as usual: hundreds of envelopes inflating on 78 acres, thousands of people walking between them, and a sky that, for the fourth straight day, did its part.
