Bayern Munich had never won at Atlético Madrid. On Tuesday night, with half a team missing, they finally did — and it was not close.
The German champions arrived at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano without head coach Vincent Kompany, absent ill, and with Jamal Musiala, Luis Díaz, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari all on the injury list. Michael Olise, a doubt after a knee injury against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, was cleared to start and joined Harry Kane and Lennart Karl in a makeshift front line, with Alphonso Davies pushed up the left wing.
Bayern controlled the first half without landing a punch. Neither side managed a shot on target before the break. Julián Álvarez flashed an early chance wide, Karl blazed over from a Kane lay-off after Dayot Upamecano's pressing won the ball back, and Kane volleyed wide on the turn from a Laimer cross. Manuel Neuer, making his 164th Champions League appearance — a record for a German player — had little to do. The full match archive is in the Game Center.
The second half belonged to Bayern from the first minute. Joshua Kimmich stung Jan Oblak's palms from distance, and on 54 minutes the pressure told in the simplest way. Robin Le Normand took too long on the ball inside his own area, Karl picked his pocket and lifted the finish over the advancing Oblak. The teenager had his goal, and Atlético's plan was gone.
Diego Simeone answered with a triple change — Koke, Ademola Lookman and Kang-in Lee for Alexander Sørloth, Álex Baena and Le Normand — and Marcos Llorente could not take the hosts' clearest look of the night. Bayern kept coming instead. Upamecano drove forward and saw a deflected shot tipped onto the crossbar by Oblak on 73 minutes. A minute later Kane drifted a pass out to Laimer on the right of the area, and the Austrian took a touch, looked up, and rifled the ball high past Oblak.
Laimer, outstanding all night down the right, had also scored in Der Klassiker at the weekend — the first time in his career he has scored in consecutive matches. Bayern thought they had a third late on, only for it to be ruled out for a foul by Upamecano, and it did not matter.
A first in Madrid
The numbers matched the eye test: 19 shots to nine for Bayern, and a first defeat in 10 matches for Atlético, whose nine-match unbeaten run ends with their first home defeat of the season. Bayern, with two wins and two draws, climb to eighth in the league phase on eight points and remain unbeaten this season. Atlético sit on four points from four games. Kane, for his part, blanked for the first time in this season's competition — his scoring run stops at 10 straight Champions League games, one short of Cristiano Ronaldo's record — but he still left Madrid with the assist that sealed a historic win.
