Boston Blue's Back Tonight — and a Boston Strangler Copycat Is Loose

Season 2 opens with Danny and Lena chasing a copycat killer as Lena returns to the force after the finale's crash. Jamie Reagan's back, the Reagan family keeps expanding, and the Tom Selleck question still lingers.

The Short Version

  • Boston Blue Season 2 premieres tonight, Friday Oct. 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS — closing out the network's Friday block after Sheriff Country and Fire Country.
  • The premiere, “The Crash,” has Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) hunting a Boston Strangler copycat who's already claimed five victims.
  • Will Estes returns as Jamie Reagan; Len Cariou reprises Henry Reagan in the premiere; Marisa Ramirez is back as Maria Baez.
  • Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan remains wish fulfillment for now — the showrunners say the right story "will present itself."

The Blue Bloods universe didn't die — it just moved north. Boston Blue Season 2 premieres tonight, Friday Oct. 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, and the sophomore season isn't easing in: the premiere, “The Crash,” throws Danny Reagan and Lena Silver at a string of murders mirroring the infamous Boston Strangler killings, with a copycat who's already claimed five victims and a city starting to panic.

The case lands on night one for a reason. Season 1 ended on a genuine cliffhanger: the finale, “Patrol,” closed with Lena's boyfriend, Detective Brian Rogers, hit by a truck with his car going into the water. Season 2 opens after a small time jump, per showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis — Lena has recovered, and tonight is her first day back on the force after being severely injured on the job. So "The Crash" is doing double duty: a headline case for the season while its lead detective walks back in still carrying the wreck. TV Insider notes the premiere is literally Lena's return shift. No easing in.

Beyond the Strangler case, the premiere sets the season's two big personal arcs. Danny faces a career-defining promotion decision — the kind of crossroads this franchise loves, and the kind Wahlberg plays best. And Lena follows a lead connecting Rogers' crash to a more powerful figure, per Blex Media's trailer breakdown, which means the finale's wreck wasn't just a cliffhanger — it's a thread that runs the season.

The cast is fully back: Wahlberg and Martin-Green, plus Gloria Reuben as D.A. Mae Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, and Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan. And the Reagan family tree keeps branching into Boston. Will Estes reprises Jamie Reagan in Season 2. Len Cariou is back as Henry Reagan in the premiere itself. Marisa Ramirez returns as Detective Maria Baez — Danny's girlfriend — as the show keeps building toward her eventual move to Boston, per Blex Media.

Which brings us to the question every Blue Bloods fan asks: what about Frank? The showrunners are playing it exactly right. "The right story that brings Frank into the world of Boston Blue will present itself, and when it does, it's going to be an episode of television that we can only dream to write," co-showrunner Brandon Margolis told ScreenRant, per People. "It remains wish fulfillment on our part." Martin-Green told Woman's World she'd "love to have him," and the producers have said they'll make sure the story is just right because Selleck is adamant about story. Selleck himself, who previously said he was "frustrated" with Blue Bloods' cancellation, called Boston Blue "another show" and said he can't predict the future. Translation: the door is open, nobody's rushing through it, and when it happens it'll be an event. That's the correct way to handle it.

Season 2 also has a proper villain. Thad Longfellow — the cocky assistant district attorney played by The Gilded Age's Ward Horton — steps into a bigger role as Mae Silver's re-election opponent. Margolis calls Thad their "favorite antagonist," telling TV Insider his "presence is felt immediately in the premiere as a reminder of what's coming." Mae has said Thad would take Boston back into the "dark ages" if he won the D.A.'s seat, and she's prepared to do anything to stop him. The election runs all season — it won't air during the real election cycle, since that's only four episodes in, per Margolis — but it's the slow-burn political war underneath the case-of-the-week structure.

None of this was guaranteed. Wahlberg told People back in March that he got to call his castmates with the Season 2 news himself: "Every cast member got tears in their eyes, every single one of them, and so did I." Season 1 was one of last fall's top new series, per Paramount+, and the renewal landed like it mattered because for this cast it clearly did. Twenty episodes are on order for Season 2, per TVmaze, airing weekly on Fridays.
