Fire Country's Back Tonight — and the Premiere Swallows Edgewater Whole

Season 5 opens with a sinkhole under Main Street during the Founders' Day festival. Bode's still finding himself, there's a new firefighter at Station 42, and the season's only 13 episodes this time.

The Short Version

  • Fire Country Season 5 premieres tonight, Friday Oct. 9, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS — the middle hour of the network's Friday block, after Sheriff Country at 8 and before Boston Blue at 10.
  • The opener, “Founders’ Day,” sends a catastrophic sinkhole ripping open under Edgewater's Main Street in the middle of the town festival, trapping residents underground.
  • Olivia Thirlby joins as series regular Cecilia Jade “CJ” Ryan, a new firefighter at Station 42. The full main cast returns.
  • Season 5 runs 13 episodes, down from 20 — and Max Thieriot says the lighter load is “a blessing.”

Fire Country has spent four seasons throwing everything at Edgewater — wildfires, floods, prison breaks, family implosions — and tonight it opens Season 5 by dropping the town into a hole. Literally. The premiere, "Founders' Day," airs Friday, Oct. 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, and a catastrophic sinkhole rips open beneath Main Street right in the middle of the annual Founders' Day festival, trapping residents underground and forcing Station 42 into a rescue that hits way too close to home.

This is the disaster show at its most on-brand. Fire Country doesn't do small stakes — it's built on emergencies that double as relationship wrecking balls — and putting the disaster under the feet of the whole town at a community festival is the cleanest version of that formula yet. Max Thieriot, who plays Bode and co-created the show, told TV Insider there's genuine reason to worry: "I think we can definitely worry. It's right there in town, and there's a town event that's taking place. And so a lot of the community is involved." When the town is the casualty zone, every familiar face in Edgewater is suddenly on the board.

Where we're picking up matters, too. Season 4 ended with the flood — the finale, "Try Not to Drown," aired back in May — and Season 5 opens with Bode still working through the aftermath. Thieriot told TV Insider this is a "big season for Bode," with his character trying to figure out what kind of firefighter he actually wants to be and becoming someone the community can rely on. Four seasons in, Bode is finally asking the question the show has been circling since the pilot: redemption was the premise, but what comes after the redemption arc?

There's also new blood at the station. Olivia Thirlby joins the cast as series regular Cecilia Jade “CJ” Ryan, a firefighter arriving at Station 42 who shakes up the house dynamic. Thieriot told TV Insider she’s “a different firefighter than we’re used to” — a little bit of a fish out of water — but that she brings a different perspective, serious skill, real confidence, and genuine ability. Bode vouches for her even though she doesn't have wildland experience, which, knowing this show, is either a great call or the start of a multi-episode disaster. There's also a mysterious former firefighter rolling into Edgewater in the premiere, per CBS's official episode synopsis, so CJ isn't the only new variable in play.

Everyone else is back: Diane Farr (Sharon Leone), Jordan Calloway (Jake Crawford), Jules Latimer (Eve Edwards), Kevin Alejandro (Manny Perez), Stephanie Arcila (Gabriella Perez), and Billy Burke (Vince Leone), per CBS and USA Today. For a show that loves putting its ensemble through the wringer, the full starting lineup plus Thirlby is a loaded roster.

Then there's the number everyone noticed: 13. Season 5 runs 13 episodes, down from the 20-episode seasons Fire Country delivered in Seasons 3 and 4 — part of CBS's broader 2026-27 order cuts that also shortened Matlock, NCIS: Origins, and NCIS: Sydney. And Thieriot isn't mourning the lost episodes. "You know, 20 episodes, I won't lie, is a lot," he told CinemaBlend. "It's taxing on everybody. The writers, the crew, the actors. So, I think it will be a blessing." Honestly, he's right — a tighter season means less filler, and Fire Country's best hours have always been the ones where it moves like it has somewhere to be. A couple of bonus things worth knowing going into tonight. Grammy-nominated songwriter INK — who's written for Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar — performs in Season 5, Episode 3, according to CBS. And the Fire Country universe is getting bigger on a Friday in November: a two-hour crossover event on Nov. 6 starts with Sheriff Country at 8 p.m. ET/PT and continues with Fire Country at 9, per Decider — the spinoff and the mothership finally sharing a night again.

That spinoff, by the way, is the show airing directly before tonight's premiere. Sheriff Country Season 2 opens CBS's Friday at 8 p.m., and Boston Blue Season 2 follows Fire Country at 10 — so CBS is betting three straight hours that you never leave the couch. For a network that owns Friday nights, that's the whole strategy in one lineup.

How to watch: Fire Country airs at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Paramount+ Premium subscribers can stream it live as it airs; everyone else on Paramount+ gets it on demand the next day, per CBS. If you're somehow new to the show: it premiered Oct. 7, 2022, created by Thieriot, Tony Phelan, and Joan Rater, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS Studios, following inmate firefighter Bode Donovan through California's conservation camp program in the fictional town of Edgewater. Four seasons later, the premise still works because the fire is never just the fire — it's whatever's burning between the people trying to put it out.
