THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026 — Tonight is the kind of Thursday night game that tells you everything about where two franchises are. In one corner: the Dallas Cowboys, 2-2, coming off a 34-30 comeback win over Houston, with the second-highest-scoring offense in football and a receiver who just put up one of the best games of the season. In the other: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 0-4 for the first time since 2013, starting an undrafted rookie quarterback for the second straight week, missing four starters, and walking into AT&T Stadium as 8.5-point underdogs. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
This is not a complicated matchup to handicap. The question is whether it is as simple as it looks — because Thursday night games on short rest have a way of making the obvious pick look foolish.
Mayfield is out. Again.
The Bucs made it official Wednesday: Baker Mayfield will miss his second consecutive game with the dislocated right thumb he suffered in the Week 3 loss. The team ruled out four players after Wednesday’s practice — Mayfield, safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (rib), cornerback Benjamin Morrison (quad) and linebacker SirVocea Dennis (ankle/foot) — and all four had missed the first two days of the short-week prep.
The Mayfield situation is the story of Tampa’s season in miniature. He signed a three-year, $165 million extension before the season, then threw just two touchdowns in the first three games while taking 13 sacks. Now the thumb could reportedly sideline him up to six weeks. For a team that is 0-4, that is not an injury — that is a season circling the drain.

The Daniels audition, part two
So it’s Jalon Daniels’ show again. The undrafted rookie out of Kansas made his first NFL start last week against Green Bay and, honestly, it went about how you’d expect: 19-of-27 for 148 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions — both of which the Packers turned into 10 points in a 17-14 loss. He also ran for 55 yards on eight carries, which might end up being the most important number on his stat line tonight.
Here’s why: the Cowboys cannot stop mobile quarterbacks. Dallas ranks 31st in rush defense at 150.3 yards per game, and running QBs have been eating: Jaxson Dart ran for 54 against them, Jayden Daniels for 69, Lamar Jackson for 50. Jalon Daniels’ 55 rushing yards last week weren’t a fluke — that’s his game. If Tampa has any path to keeping this close, it’s Daniels’ legs buying time against a defense that has recorded just four sacks and zero interceptions all season.
The flip side: the Cowboys’ defense is bad in a very specific, exploitable-by-veterans way — 30th in total defense (389.5 yards per game), allowing 28 points per game. A rookie making his second start on a short week is exactly the kind of quarterback who does not exploit that. Tampa’s plan will be conservative and run-heavy by necessity. Dallas knows it. Everybody knows it.
The hottest offense in football vs. a real defense
Here’s the thing nobody should lose in the blowout narrative: Tampa’s defense is legitimately good. The Bucs rank fourth in the NFL in total defense at 282.8 yards per game. They held Green Bay to 283 total yards last week and forced two turnovers. They are in the bottom half in points allowed (24 per game), but a lot of that is the offense putting them in terrible spots.
The problem is what’s coming at them. Dak Prescott has thrown for 1,065 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception through four games. CeeDee Lamb is coming off a career-high 17 catches for 189 yards and the game-winner with 40 seconds left against Houston — 37 receptions, 498 yards and four scores on the season. Javonte Williams punched in three touchdowns on 19 carries last week. After scoring 20 in the opener, Dallas has put up 37, 31 and 34.

What’s at stake
For Tampa, this is about survival. An 0-5 start with Mayfield possibly out into November is how coaches get fired — Todd Bowles’ seat is already described as scorching — and how seasons get written off by Halloween. A win tonight, ugly as it would have to be, changes the entire conversation.
For Dallas, the stakes are quieter but real. The Cowboys have survived one of the nastiest opening stretches in recent memory — a Week 3 loss to Baltimore in Brazil, a road trip to Houston, now a Thursday night game — and they’re 2-2 with the offense humming. Win tonight and they’re 3-2, above .500, and positioned to make a run in a suddenly wide-open NFC East. Lose to an 0-4 team starting a rookie, at home, as more than a touchdown favorite? That’s the kind of loss that follows a team.
History says Dallas: the Cowboys lead the all-time series 17-6 and won the last meeting 26-24 in December 2024, though that was with Cooper Rush at quarterback and Mayfield throwing for 303 yards on the other side. The Bucs are 2-13 all-time in Dallas, though they did win at AT&T Stadium as recently as 2022.
