The Champions League came back from the international break with nine games on Tuesday, and the two early kick-offs set the tone for the night: the home crowds brought the noise, and the visitors took the points. Sporting CP won at Lens with a performance built on nerve and counter-punches, and in Baku, Sabah FK gave their supporters a night that will be retold for years.

Lens 0-2 Sporting CP: The Siege That Failed

The Stade Bollaert-Delelis is one of the great away trips in Europe — steep, loud, right on top of the pitch — and Lens played like a team determined to feed off it. The hosts set a frantic early tempo, Florian Thauvin bending crosses across the face of goal, and for twenty minutes Sporting could barely get out.

Then, on 22 minutes, the sucker punch. Sporting broke at speed, Nestory Irankunda crossed from the right, and Luis Suárez finished right-footed from the centre of the box into the bottom left corner. It was a goal made entirely of the things Lens were not doing: one pass to break the press, one cross, one touch to finish.

What followed was a siege with no breach. Lens finished with 21 shots to Sporting's 11 and 56 percent of possession, and Thauvin kept finding pockets to supply the box. But Sporting's back line held its shape, and when Lens did get a sight of goal, Kaique was there — six saves on the night, each one greeted by a groan that rolled down the Bollaert's steep stands.

The kill shot arrived on 74 minutes, and it came from the bench. Silas Andersen had been on the pitch for roughly a minute after replacing João Simões when he slid a through ball into space on another fast break, and Issa Doumbia — who had run himself into the ground in midfield all night — drove a right-footed shot from outside the box into the centre of the goal. Two breaks, two goals, game over. Sporting are two for two in this league phase, six points and not a goal conceded on the night, and they did it in one of the hardest away atmospheres in the competition.

Sabah FK 2-0 Slavia Prague: Baku's Big Night

If Sporting's win was professional, Sabah's was pure joy. The Azerbaijani champions were underdogs at home against Slavia Prague — the market had the Czech side as clear favourites — and for a half it looked like the occasion might pass them by. It nearly didn't: on 17 minutes Kaheem Parris had the ball in the net and the Baku Olympic Stadium in raptures, only for the offside flag to wipe out what would have been the club's first Champions League goal.

Parris simply went and scored it again. Four minutes into the second half, Sabah broke fast, Ivan Lepinjica slipped the pass through, and Parris finished left-footed into the bottom corner — this time it counted, and this time the stadium got its moment. Slavia threw everything at the equaliser: 18 shots, eight on target, wave after wave. Sabah goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov answered with six saves, and the home side defended their box like it was a cup final.

The release came on 88 minutes. Orphé Mbina, who had replaced Parris for the final stretch, turned provider, and Joy-Lance Mickels struck a left-footed shot from long range on the left that settled it: 2-0, and a result that will sit at the very top of Sabah's short European history. For Slavia, the arithmetic is already grim — beaten by Lens at home on Matchday 1, beaten in Baku tonight, zero points from two games and a league phase that is slipping away from them.

What It Means, and What Comes Next Tonight

Sporting's six points from six, with the Matchday 1 win banked and now a win at Lens, puts the Lisbon side in early control of their own path to the knockouts. Lens, who won so impressively in Prague on the opening night, learned the other half of the league-phase lesson: dominance without a finish is just noise. And Sabah — a club playing at a level their supporters could only dream about a few years ago — have announced themselves to the whole competition.

There is table arithmetic behind the drama, too. In the league phase, the top eight qualify directly for the round of 16 and the next sixteen go into a playoff round — which is why two wins from two, this early, is worth so much more than six points. Sporting have given themselves a cushion almost nobody else in the competition owns yet. Sabah, meanwhile, have done the thing every debut-stage club dreams about: turned one home night into three points, a clean sheet and a story the whole continent will notice by morning.

The night is far from done. Seven more games kicked off at 21:00 CET, headlined by Atlético Madrid against Manchester United in the Spanish capital, with Arsenal hosting Lille, Barcelona in Istanbul against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich visiting Viking FK. Our full Matchday 2 preview has the run-through of every late game, and this desk will wrap the night the same way we wrapped its opening — when the whistles go.
