The Short Version

  • The cast of Children of Blood and Bone presented an extended trailer and exclusive footage at New York Comic Con on Saturday, October 10, according to That Grape Juice and other panel coverage.
  • The footage included Thuso Mbedu's Zélie training with Viola Davis's Mama Agba; director Gina Prince-Bythewood was joined on the panel — moderated by Rian Johnson — by Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Lashana Lynch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cynthia Erivo.
  • Erivo discussed playing the villain Admiral Kaea, a change of pace after a long run of heroic roles, per That Grape Juice's panel report.
  • The film, adapted from Tomi Adeyemi's novel, opens January 15, 2027 in theaters, IMAX and Dolby Cinema, with Tems as executive music producer and Burna Boy as music consultant, according to Paramount's trailer materials.

Orïsha got its biggest public unveiling yet this weekend. The cast of Children of Blood and Bone, Paramount's adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling fantasy novel, took the stage at New York Comic Con on Saturday, October 10, where attendees were shown an extended trailer and exclusive footage from the film, according to That Grape Juice. A second panel report, from That Hollywood Show, described the same exclusive look — including a training sequence that has quickly become the most talked-about piece of footage from the presentation.

The panel itself was a statement of scale. That Grape Juice reported that Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Cynthia Erivo, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Lashana Lynch and Chiwetel Ejiofor joined director Gina Prince-Bythewood for the showcase, in a conversation moderated by Knives Out filmmaker Rian Johnson. Syndicated coverage of the panel added that it closed out Saturday night on the convention's Empire Stage, and that Johnson steered the discussion toward the family conflicts underneath the film's magic and spectacle.

Zélie trains with Mama Agba

The footage highlight, by every account, was training. That Grape Juice reported that the exclusive material featured Mbedu's Zélie training alongside Viola Davis's Mama Agba, building on the official trailer audiences first saw in July. That Hollywood Show's account described the sequence in more detail: Zélie and her fellow trainees working under Mama Agba's watch, with a fight style the production built to feel almost like choreography — stunt coordinator Danny Hernandez developed the movement language for Zélie's fighting from a blend of influences that panel discussion linked to Wushu, Capoeira and African-inspired forms, according to that report.

That detail matters because of who Mbedu and Prince-Bythewood are together. As That Grape Juice noted, the film reunites the director with Mbedu after The Woman King, the 2022 historical epic in which Davis also starred. The training footage therefore reads as a deliberate echo: a young warrior being forged under a formidable mentor, in a world where learning to fight is inseparable from learning who you are. Panel coverage emphasized that the sequence also establishes the social order of Orïsha — the contempt directed at the white-haired divîners, young people whose magic has not awakened, by the non-magical ruling class — and the anger Zélie carries into every room.

A royal family at war with itself

If the training footage supplied the spectacle, the panel conversation supplied the theme. Syndicated coverage of the Empire Stage session reported that the extended trailer puts the royal family's fractures in sharper focus: Princess Amari, played by Amandla Stenberg, flees the palace after witnessing violence carried out by her father, King Saran, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, while her brother Inan, played by Damson Idris, is caught between loyalty to his father and his own conscience. Johnson reportedly characterized that father-and-children dynamic in Shakespearean terms during the conversation, the same coverage said.

That framing fits the story Adeyemi's readers already know. The film follows Zélie Adebola's quest to restore magic that was violently taken from her people, allied with her brother Tzain — played by Tosin Cole — and, improbably, with the king's own children. It is a structure that makes the villains family and the rebellion personal, and the panel leaned into it: this is a fantasy epic, the cast kept suggesting, whose engine is what parents do to children and what children decide to do about it.

Erivo embraces the villain

The panel's most quoted moment belonged to Cynthia Erivo, who plays Admiral Kaea. According to That Grape Juice, Erivo told attendees she had spent a long time playing heroes, and described this role as, in her words, "for all intents and purposes, a villain." After headlining heroic turns — most visibly in Wicked — Erivo's turn as the story's formidable admiral gives the film an antagonist played by one of the most decorated performers of her generation, and the Comic Con crowd, per the reports, responded accordingly: That Grape Juice noted cheers for the new footage and screams from the audience at a dramatic line delivered by Idris.

The music team drew attention as well. That Grape Juice reported that Tems executive produced the film's soundtrack, with Burna Boy serving as music consultant, and that Ayra Starr makes her acting debut in the film; Paramount's own trailer materials, as reported by BroadwayWorld, credit Tems as executive music producer and Burna Boy as executive music consultant, with new original songs from both artists featured in the trailer. For a film rooted in a West African-inspired world, that is not decoration — it is part of the adaptation's identity, and part of why the project has drawn attention well beyond the book's original readership.

The road to January 15, 2027

Children of Blood and Bone arrives in theaters, Dolby Cinema and IMAX on January 15, 2027, according to That Grape Juice and to Paramount's trailer materials — a holiday-weekend slot that signals how much the studio is investing in the launch. Prince-Bythewood co-wrote the screenplay with Adeyemi, per Paramount's credits, and the ensemble around the panel's eight principals runs even deeper, including Regina King as Queen Nehanda and Idris Elba as Lekan.

Saturday's panel was, in effect, the film's second major public moment after July's trailer launch, and it did what a Comic Con showcase is supposed to do: it gave fans a specific image to carry away — Zélie, staff in hand, training under Mama Agba — and a date to count down to.
