Live-Action 'Moana' Sets Its Disney+ Voyage: Streaming October 21 With The Rock Back as Maui

Disney's live-action Moana streams exclusively on Disney+ from October 21, 2026, with Catherine Laga'aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson back as Maui — plus a Heal the Bay beach cleanup at Santa Monica Beach on October 17 to celebrate the launch.

The ocean is calling again — this time from the couch. Disney's live-action Moana will stream exclusively on Disney+ from October 21, 2026, giving the summer theatrical release its streaming voyage and putting Dwayne Johnson's Maui and Catherine Laga'aia's Moana in front of the audience that made the original animated film a genuine streaming phenomenon.

Advanced Television reported the October 21 date on Tuesday, October 13, with the film directed by Thomas Kail and Johnson reprising the demigod role he originated in animation. ComingSoon confirmed the same streaming date in its own coverage, along with the celebration Disney has planned around the launch — more on that below, because it is a genuinely nice touch.

The Cast That Sails

Laga'aia stars as Moana, the wayfinder who answers the ocean's call and sails beyond the reef of Motunui to restore prosperity to her people. Johnson returns as Maui — and that continuity matters more than most live-action casting. Maui was already, in a real sense, Johnson's animated performance: the swagger, the comic timing, the surprising softness underneath the bragging. Moving him from the recording booth in front of the camera was the most natural piece of casting in the whole production.

The ensemble around them, per the reporting, includes Jemaine Clement, Frankie Adams, John Tui and Rena Owen — a cast rooted in New Zealand and Pacific talent, which is not a small thing for a story this deeply tied to Pacific Islander culture and voyaging tradition. A live-action remake lives or dies on whether it feels like an expansion of its world or a photocopy of it, and casting performers with real ties to the region is one of the clearest signals that the filmmakers understood the assignment.

The Number That Explains Everything

Here is the figure that tells you why this film exists and why its streaming debut is a marquee date for Disney+. According to Advanced Television, the original animated Moana is the most watched movie on Disney+, with more than 1.5 billion hours streamed globally. Read that again. Not the most watched animated movie. The most watched movie, full stop. Families did not just like this film — they moved into it. It is bedtime, road-trip, sick-day, generation-raising infrastructure.

That context also frames the live-action film's reported production budget of $220 million, the figure carried in CBR and ScreenRant's reporting on the announcement. That is an enormous bet, but it is a bet on the single most reliable title in the Disney+ library. And streaming, frankly, is where this film was always going to find its biggest audience: the original built its legend not in a single theatrical weekend but in years of repeat viewing, and a live-action version aimed at the same families gets its real test starting October 21, when the rewatching begins.

A Cleanup Worthy of the Character

Our favourite detail in Tuesday's news is not a date or a dollar figure. Per ComingSoon, Disney has partnered with the nonprofit Heal the Bay for a "Nothin' But Sand" beach cleanup on October 17 at Santa Monica Beach, ahead of the streaming launch, with an appearance by choreographer and associate producer Tiana Nonosina Liufau. It is the rare promotional event that actually rhymes with the movie: a story about a young woman protecting her island and her ocean, celebrated by cleaning an actual beach. Studios announce tie-ins every week. Ones that leave a shoreline better than they found it are worth naming.

What to Watch For on October 21

The streaming debut lands on a Wednesday, which positions it for a long first weekend of family viewing — and for the singalong effect that turned the animated original into a permanent fixture. Expect the songs to do heavy lifting in week one; they always have with this franchise. Expect, too, a fresh round of the comparison conversation, because live-action remakes invite it by design. The healthiest way to watch, in our view, is the way kids will watch it anyway: not as a replacement for a beloved original, but as another voyage in the same waters.

There is also a generational handoff happening here that is easy to miss. The children who wore out the animated film are now old enough to be introducing it to younger siblings, cousins and, in plenty of households, their own kids. A live-action version arriving on the same service, in the same library row, turns that handoff into a double feature. Disney understands this dynamic better than any studio on earth, and the October 21 date — close enough to the holidays for family movie nights, far enough from the summer theatrical run to feel like an event again — is chosen with that living-room ritual in mind.

The original isn't going anywhere — 1.5 billion hours says it is load-bearing. The live-action film now gets the same arena to prove itself in: the home, the repeat viewing, the long tail. Moana streams on Disney+ from October 21. More film coverage is on our movies front, Disney+'s other big launch tonight is in our VisionQuest premiere story, and all of today's entertainment headlines are on the news front.

Correction (October 14, 2026): An earlier version of this story gave the live-action film's reported production budget as $250 million, attributed to Advanced Television. The figure carried in CBR and ScreenRant's reporting on the announcement is $220 million. Advanced Television remains the cited source for the October 21 streaming date.
