Eagles Sign Joe Milton Off the Cowboys' Practice Squad as Hurts' Absence Looms

With Jalen Hurts ruled out indefinitely after an ultrasound showed movement in a calf blood clot, Philadelphia signed QB Joe Milton III off the Dallas practice squad to its 53-man roster on Friday. Tanner McKee starts Sunday against Carolina; Milton gives the 2-3 Eagles a real arm behind him.

The Short Version

  • The Eagles signed QB Joe Milton III off the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad to their 53-man roster on Friday, per Jordan Schultz and multiple reports.
  • Jalen Hurts is out indefinitely — ruled out for Sunday vs. Carolina after a follow-up ultrasound showed movement in a superficial blood clot in his calf.
  • Tanner McKee starts Sunday; rookie Cole Payton was the only other quarterback on the roster before the Milton signing.
  • Milton’s signature game: 22-of-29 for 241 yards and a passing TD, plus a rushing TD, for New England in Week 18 of 2024 against Buffalo.

The Philadelphia Eagles went shopping in the last place their fans would choose — the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad — and came back with the biggest arm available. On Friday, October 16, the Eagles signed quarterback Joe Milton III off Dallas's practice squad to their 53-man roster, a move first reported by Jordan Schultz and confirmed across the league's reporting corps, including Adam Schefter, per The Spun, and Pro Football Rumors. Under league rules, signing a player off another team's practice squad means putting him straight on your active roster, so this was no stash-and-develop flier. Philadelphia needed a quarterback, now.

The reason is the news that has swallowed the Eagles' week. Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers after a follow-up ultrasound showed movement in a superficial blood clot in his calf, and he is described as out indefinitely. For a 2-3 team on a three-game losing streak, Friday's signing is what a depth emergency looks like when a franchise quarterback's timeline goes blank.

How the Eagles got here

The Hurts injury traces to Week 4 against the Rams, when he was cleated in the calf, according to the reporting on the case. He was cleared to keep playing and did — in London, against the Jaguars — but the follow-up ultrasound changed the picture: the clot had moved. That word, movement, is what turned a managed injury into a shutdown. Hurts is out for the Panthers game, and Ian Rapoport's characterization, via Pro Football Rumors, is out indefinitely. Head coach Nick Sirianni, asked about it, referred questions to the team's statement — never the sentence a head coach offers when the news is good. Our earlier coverage of Hurts being ruled out and Tanner McKee getting the start walks through the diagnosis in full.

That left the Eagles' quarterback room looking like this on Friday morning: Tanner McKee, who starts Sunday, and rookie Cole Payton — a fifth-round pick out of North Dakota State who went 5-of-12 for 47 yards in the preseason — and nobody else. One snap, one awkward landing, and Philadelphia's season would have rested on a Day 3 rookie who has attempted a dozen preseason passes. Hence Milton.

Milton's strange, loud résumé

Milton is 26, stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 236 pounds, and owns one of the strongest arms in professional football — a fact that has followed him since his college days and made him a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2024. Eagles Wire's accounting of his career is the fun part. In Week 18 of 2024, pressed into action against Buffalo, Milton completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score — a debut that had half the league asking why a player who looked like that lasted until the sixth round.

New England traded him to Dallas in April 2025, and the Dallas chapter is humbler. He appeared in four games in 2025, completing 15 of 24 passes for 183 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. His career line, per Eagles Wire: 37-of-53 for 424 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, plus 66 rushing yards and a rushing score. This summer, he lost the Cowboys' backup job to Sam Howell in camp, was waived, re-signed to the practice squad, and had not been active for a game all season. And yet his 2026 preseason line — 29-of-43 for 378 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions — is a reminder of why teams keep talking themselves into the arm. The tools are theatrical. The consistency never quite arrived. Philadelphia just bet a roster spot that the tools are what it needs standing behind McKee.

What happens Sunday — and next week

Do not expect Milton to be the story of Sunday. McKee starts against Carolina, and Pro Football Rumors projects that Payton will most likely be active as the backup, since he at least knows the offense; asking Milton to run Sean Mannion's system on roughly 48 hours of study is asking for a very specific kind of chaos. The realistic timeline is next week: a full week of practice, a package of plays built around that arm, and Milton positioned to take over the backup role — with the understanding that, given Hurts' indefinite absence, the backup role in Philadelphia right now is one hit away from being the whole season.

There is also the small matter of where he came from. Poaching a quarterback off Dallas's roster — even its practice squad — during a losing streak is the kind of move that tells you the Eagles' front office is done pretending the depth chart was fine. It was not fine. It was McKee, a rookie, and a prayer. Now there is at least a third name in the room, and it happens to be a name with a 241-yard NFL game on his record and a howitzer where his right arm should be. For a franchise having the autumn Philadelphia is having, that counts as a good Friday. Follow the fallout on the Previously sports desk.
