Eichel Walks Into Crosby's Milestone Night

Sidney Crosby needs one point to pass Marcel Dionne and stand alone at sixth on the NHL's all-time scoring list. The man trying to spoil it is Jack Eichel. Vegas is on the second night of a back-to-back in a building where it has won exactly once — and Pittsburgh has never lost a season series to the Golden Knights. Something on that list breaks tonight.

One point from sixth place, all time

Start with the history, because tonight has some. Crosby put up three points in Montreal on Saturday — a goal and two assists in a 5–4 loss — and it moved his career total to 1,771 points. That ties him with Marcel Dionne. One more point, at any moment tonight, and Crosby passes Dionne for sole possession of sixth place on the NHL's all-time list, behind only Gretzky, Jagr, Messier, Howe and Ron Francis. Every night he plays now, the building is one bounce away from watching the record book move.

He is chasing it in the middle of a losing stretch. Saturday's loss was Pittsburgh's second straight, and the Penguins come home 5-7-2, sixth in the Metropolitan, with a loss tonight threatening to push them at least six points back of a playoff spot, per Pittsburgh Hockey Now.

The Breakdown: two captains, two very different seasons

Our Stats Hub has the season shape of this matchup on one line each. Eichel leads Vegas with 20 points (7 goals, 13 assists) in 16 games — his Breakdown page sits near the top of the league leaders. Crosby's line reads 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) in 14 games on his Breakdown page — modest by his standards; Erik Karlsson leads Pittsburgh's scoring with 16 points.

Against tonight's opponent, though, the career numbers tighten up. Crosby has 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists) in 14 career games against Vegas, and he likes this building in this matchup: seven points in seven home games against the Golden Knights, per the Penguins' preview. Eichel has been just as comfortable the other way — 19 points (10 goals, 9 assists) in 21 career games against Pittsburgh, going back to his Buffalo years. Neither man treats this fixture like a night off.

And the supporting cast is chasing things of its own. Mark Stone — whose goal and two assists all landed in the first period of the first meeting — is four points from becoming the Golden Knights' all-time scoring leader. Mitch Marner rides a 10-game point streak into Pittsburgh and sits three points short of 100 as a Golden Knight. Brayden McNabb is one point from 200 in his career. On the home side, Tommy Novak plays his 300th NHL game, and his 100th career assist set up Crosby's power-play goal on Saturday.

A building Vegas almost never wins in

The all-time series is dead level — Vegas can improve to 9-8-1 against Pittsburgh with a win, per the club's morning skate report — but split it by building and it stops looking even. Vegas is 1-6-1 all-time at PPG Paints Arena. The Golden Knights' last win in this building was October 2019, a 3–0 shutout backstopped by Marc-André Fleury against his old team. Pittsburgh has won five straight home games against Vegas since.

Layer the season series on top: Pittsburgh has never lost one to Vegas since the Golden Knights entered the league in 2017-18. That streak is one night from ending. Vegas took the first meeting 6–2 at T-Mobile Arena on October 17 — a three-goal first period, Crosby answering on the power play — on the night Eichel played his 700th NHL game and marked it with two assists. Crosby's goal that night was the 657th of his career, breaking a tie with Brendan Shanahan on the all-time goals list; this fixture keeps handing him history to step over. Win tonight and the season series belongs to Vegas for the first time ever. Last season is the warning label, though: the two meetings were both routs, a 5–0 Penguins win in Pittsburgh on March 1 and a 6–2 Vegas win eleven days later.

The first meeting, in pictures — the NHL's official highlights from October 17:

What shape are they actually in?

Vegas is the better team on paper and the tireder team in fact. Monday in Boston, the Golden Knights lost 3–2 in a shootout — Stone on the power play, rookie Trevor Connelly tying it in the third, Carter Hart making 25 saves in his return from a lower-body injury, David Pastrnak the only man to score in the shootout. That made it 1-3-2 across the last six for a team that opened 8-2-0. Pittsburgh is fresher but shakier: two straight losses, a defense allowing 3.43 goals a night, and a home record (4-1-1) propping up everything else about their start.

The crease matchup is expectation, not confirmation: Adin Hill (5-2-0, .891 save percentage) is the projected Vegas starter on the back-to-back after Hart went Monday, and Arturs Silovs (5-3-1, .889, two shutouts) is expected for Pittsburgh. The injury lists matter on both benches. Vegas winger Victor Olofsson (lower body, injured reserve) has joined the road trip and could return, per the Las Vegas Review-Journal; defenseman Parker Wotherspoon remains on IR. Pittsburgh may be thinner: Evgeni Malkin — 11 points in 13 games — and defenseman Kaedan Korczak are day-to-day with lower-body injuries after missing Monday's practice, Elmer Soderblom has slid to week-to-week, and Bryan Rust is on IR. The one clear boost is Justin Brazeau, cleared for his season debut.

One matchup inside the matchup decides a lot of it: Vegas's power play — Stone net-front, Eichel running the half-wall — against a Pittsburgh penalty kill at 85.7 percent, top-eight in the league, that has not allowed a single power-play goal at home all season. Vegas's own kill, leaking at around 70 percent, has been the quiet problem of the road trip.

Previously's board prices the game as a coin flip: DraftKings via ESPN, as of 15:24 UTC on game day, has Vegas at −108 and Pittsburgh at −112, with the total at 6.5. The market is telling you the back-to-back and the building cancel out the standings. It just has to survive Crosby needing one point, Stone needing four, and a season-series streak that has never broken — all in one night.

Previously's Take

This is the best kind of November game — early enough that nobody's season bends on it, loaded enough that everybody in the building knows what they're watching. Crosby passing Dionne alone would make it a night. Add Stone closing on the franchise scoring crown and a Vegas team trying to win in a building that has eaten it for seven years, and Tuesday in Pittsburgh is doing far more than filling a schedule slot. The Golden Knights are the better roster. The Penguins own the building, the rest and the milestone. Puck drops at four o'clock our time — the Game Center carries it live.
