For ten minutes at the Metropolitano, this looked like the night the title race changed hands. Atlético Madrid started at a sprint, Barcelona looked bewildered, and the home crowd could smell top spot. Then Fermín López scored twice, and the race tilted the other way entirely.
Barcelona came from behind to beat Atlético 2–1 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday, November 8, 2026, in La Liga — a win that sends Hansi Flick’s side three points clear at the top and leaves Atlético five points back in third.
The opening was all red and white. Joan García had to deny Julián Álvarez one-on-one inside the first minutes, and Gerard Martín turned Álvarez’s cut-back behind for a corner. From that set piece, Marc Pubill’s towering header cannoned off the bar. Barcelona answered against the run of play — a fierce Pedri strike rattled the woodwork at the other end — but Atlético’s pressure told first. Marcos Llorente found Álvarez with a pass struck with the outside of his foot, Álvarez laid it across, and Giuliano Simeone tapped in from point-blank range at 10 minutes.
Two minutes later the match paused for a minute’s silence in memory of Jesús de Miguel, the former Tenerife player. Play resumed with Atlético still on top, Hancko flicking an effort just past the post, and Barcelona’s defence creaking every time the hosts broke. Reuters counted a series of early Atlético chances; the surprise was that the lead stayed at one.

The equaliser arrived on the cusp of half-time, and it changed the temperature of the whole match. Pedri drove through the middle, Fermín’s attempted pass deflected back into his path off a defence caught hesitating, and he swept a left-footed finish first-time into the far bottom corner at 45 minutes. Atlético had been the better side for most of the half. They went in level anyway.
Flick’s men came back out playing like a side that knew it had got away with one. Lamine Yamal, quiet for an hour, bent a long-range strike inches wide. Pedri let fly again and Pubill diverted it over. The signs of a turnaround were stacking up, and on 66 minutes it landed: Yamal slipped a perfectly weighted through ball between the defenders, Fermín met it first-time across Jan Oblak and into the far corner, and the away end had its moment. He was named Man of the Match, and when he came off to applause from the travelling support, Gavi came on to help close the game out.
Atlético never really answered. Diego Simeone’s side struggled to build any second-half pressure, the home crowd’s frustration grew audible, and Barcelona could have added a third when Anthony Gordon’s cross missed the onrushing Yamal by a stride. The visitors saw the rest out with relative comfort. Every goal from the Metropolitano lives on the match’s Game Center page.

The result carries weight beyond one night in Madrid. Barcelona go three points clear of second-placed Real Madrid and five ahead of Atlético in third after 12 games, and a defeat would have sent Atlético top going into the international break — instead the gap runs the other way. The win also makes it six successive away league wins to open the season, something Barcelona have managed only three times in the club’s history. And this ground, specifically, has stopped being a fortress against them: Barcelona are only the third team ever to win five consecutive away league games at Atlético, after Athletic Club in 1955 and Real Madrid in 2013.
One midfielder decided all of it. Fermín scored the equaliser his team barely deserved and the winner it fully did, and a match that began as Atlético’s coronation rehearsal ended with Barcelona three points clear and the Metropolitano silenced.
