Friday College Football, October 16: Washington at Purdue Headlines a Three-Game Night, With a Fired Coach Coming Home

Washington (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) visits Purdue (3-3, 2-1 Big Ten) at 8 p.m. ET on FOX at Ross-Ade Stadium, where former Purdue coach Ryan Walters returns as Washington's defensive coordinator. Memphis at Tulane (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) and Appalachian State at Coastal Carolina (8 p.m. ET, ESPN2) complete Friday's slate.

The Short Version

Friday night has become college football's second stage, and this week the lights are brightest in West Lafayette. Three FBS games share Friday, October 16, and the headliner is a Big Ten meeting with a genuine subplot: Washington (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) at Purdue (3-3, 2-1 Big Ten), kicking off at 8 p.m. ET on FOX at Ross-Ade Stadium, according to Sports Illustrated's game preview and the NCAA's Week 7 television schedule. The undercard is not filler, either. Memphis visits Tulane at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN in a meeting of American Conference contenders, and Appalachian State travels to Coastal Carolina for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN2 at Brooks Stadium. Three stadiums, three conferences, one remote — here is the full Friday setup.

The main event: a homecoming nobody asked for

The story inside the story at Ross-Ade is on the visiting sideline. Washington's defensive coordinator is Ryan Walters, and Friday marks his first trip back to Purdue since the school fired him after the 2024 season, the Lafayette Journal & Courier reported. Walters' final Purdue team went 1-11, a collapse that ended his tenure after two seasons, and he landed on Washington's staff running the defense. Now he walks back into the building he used to call home, wearing the other colors, trying to slow down the program that let him go. College football rarely writes it cleaner than that.

What Walters will be trying to stop is one of the most productive passing attacks in the country. Purdue's passing game is averaging 282 yards per game, which Bleacher Nation's matchup data ranks 19th nationally, and Washington's own passing offense sits close behind at 22nd in the same data. Quarterback Ryan Browne runs the Boilermaker attack, and he comes in fresh off a complete performance in last Saturday's 41-13 rout of Minnesota at Ross-Ade — 159 passing yards and a touchdown through the air, plus 81 rushing yards and another score on the ground, according to USA Today's Sportsbook Wire recap. Running back Fame Ijeboi stole that show with a career-high 195 rushing yards and three touchdowns, which means Walters' defense cannot simply sit on the pass. Purdue can hurt you both ways right now, and it is doing it at home.

Two teams, two directions, one bye week waiting

The records say 3-3 against 3-3. The trajectories say something else entirely. Purdue has won two straight Big Ten games and, per the Journal & Courier, a third straight win Friday would put the Boilermakers at 3-1 in the conference for the first time since 2022, when they opened 3-0 in league play before a loss at Wisconsin. Sports Illustrated's preview makes the same point from the other side of the field: both teams are .500 overall, but Purdue feels considerably better about its situation than Washington does. The Huskies opened 3-0 in nonconference play and have dropped three straight since Big Ten play began, still searching for their first conference win, most recently falling 41-24 at home to Iowa last Friday.

Washington does have a bright spot to build on. With the Huskies' quarterback room banged up — Covers reported starter Demond Williams Jr. questionable after leaving the Iowa game — backup Elijah Brown stepped in and threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns in relief, per Sportsbook Wire. Whoever starts Friday will be throwing against a Purdue defense that has been generous this fall, which is precisely why the passing matchup matters: both teams would rather win this game in the air than in the trenches, and the oddsmakers' total in the low 50s reflects a shootout expectation, with Purdue a slight home favorite.

There is also a shared incentive hanging over kickoff: both teams have a bye next week, as Sports Illustrated noted. Win, and the off week feels like a reward and a runway. Lose, and it is two weeks of sitting with it. For Washington, a loss would mean an 0-4 start in the Big Ten and a long flight home to think about it. For Purdue, a win sends a rebuilding program into its bye at 4-3 overall with real November stakes — the kind of sentence nobody expected to write about the Boilermakers when the season began.

The early window: Memphis at Tulane, 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN

Friday's first FBS kick is in New Orleans, where Memphis visits Tulane at Benson Field at Yulman Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, per the NCAA schedule and FBSchedules' Week 7 guide. The Streamable's Week 7 preview singled this one out as probably the best game outside the Power Four all weekend, with two American Conference contenders meeting under the lights. Conference positioning is the prize: in the American, one loss can be survived and two usually cannot, at least not where the conference championship game — and the Group of Five's College Football Playoff path that runs through it — is concerned. Mike Monaco, Jordan Rodgers and Dana Boyle have the call on ESPN, according to Awful Announcing's Week 7 announcing schedule.

Coastal's teal turf: Appalachian State at Coastal Carolina, 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2

At the same hour as the Big Ten game, the Sun Belt takes its turn: Appalachian State at Coastal Carolina, 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 from Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina, per the NCAA and CableTV.com's Week 7 TV guide. This is one of the Sun Belt East's defining rivalries, the kind of game that tends to decide who spends November playing for a division title and who spends it playing spoiler. Jason Ross Jr. and Tyoka Jackson are on the ESPN2 call, per Awful Announcing. If the West Lafayette game turns into a track meet early, this is the channel-flip game — Brooks Stadium night games have a habit of getting strange late.

And then Saturday arrives

Friday is the appetizer for a loaded Saturday, October 17. The noon window alone brings No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Indiana on FOX — a top-five meeting that will reshape the Big Ten race Purdue and Washington are chasing — plus Florida at No. 7 Texas on ABC, according to the NCAA's Week 7 schedule. Later come Auburn at No. 1 Georgia, No. 6 Alabama at No. 14 Tennessee, Penn State at Michigan and Florida State at No. 3 Miami under the lights. We will have the full Saturday picture on our Sports front and throughout the news feed as the weekend develops. But the weekend starts Friday night in West Lafayette, New Orleans and Conway — and it starts with a fired coach walking back into his old stadium, calling a defense against the team that replaced him. That is worth the price of the remote batteries.
