For twenty years, getting away in Grand Theft Auto meant one thing. Put distance on the stars. Wait them out. Steal another car. Vanish into the map until the meter went quiet.
That fantasy is about to age out.
In late October, Edge magazine published its issue 430 cover story on GamesRadar+, written by Simon Parkin after a visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh. Rob Nelson, co-studio head, sat down with a PS5 controller and played the current Grand Theft Auto VI build for about 90 minutes. No publicist script. No guided tour. He followed his nose through Leonida, the Florida-sized state that houses Vice City, and let the systems talk.
What they said about the cops is the detail that sticks.
A report, not a vibe
Edge describes a heat system built around what the world actually knows about you. Not a vague wanted aura. A report. Your physical description. Whether you were alone or with a partner. What you were wearing. Whether CCTV caught you. What weapon you had in your hands. Those details show up as icons at the top of the screen, Edge writes, "effectively showing the contents of the police report you are trying to outrun."
So escape stops being a timer. It becomes editing.
Witnesses saw two people? Split up from your partner and that icon can go. Change your clothes and you no longer match the description as closely. Drop the gun and another piece of evidence disappears. Edge puts the shift plainly: getting away is "no longer merely a matter of waiting for stars to evaporate, but a process of making yourself progressively less recognisable."
That is the culture of it. Not invincible. You are a person on camera in somebody else's city, and the city is paying attention.

Before the chase even starts
The attention begins before anybody calls it in. Edge reports that walking around holding a shotgun can disturb the peace on its own. Pedestrians notice how you carry it. Slung over the back is one thing. Held in the hands is another. Crowds edge away or scatter. Some characters challenge you. The game still gives a little latitude before a wanted level kicks in. The point is not to punish every small move. It is to make information travel through the street the way it does in real life.

Once the report is open, the response gets meaner. During a botched robbery in the Edge session, Nelson fled on a stolen motorcycle with Lucia Caminos riding pillion. Police laid a stinger strip across the road at night. He missed it. The front tyre blew. The couple went over the handlebars. A K9 unit joined the chase. An Alsatian pinned Jason to the ground while people in Nelson's office watching urged him not to shoot the dog.

Even the getaway car can turn on you. Edge notes that a newer, expensive vehicle may carry a tracker that keeps broadcasting your position. Steal almost any car and the owner can call it in behind you. Pick the wrong driver and they may fight back. Every simple crime picks up a little cloud of consequences.
Sitting next to the heat system is a longer ledger Edge calls the Criminal Profile. It tracks Jason and Lucia from Professional to Irredeemable, shown with angel and devil icons. You can incapacitate or intimidate instead of killing, or shoot first and ask later. Rockstar told Edge that profile will influence how their story unfolds. The chase is the night. The profile is the reputation you wake up with.

Grand Theft Auto VI is due November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The stars are still there. What Edge saw underneath them is the file: clothes, partner, cameras, the gun you should have dropped two blocks ago.
Leonida is not waiting for the meter to clear. It is building the case.
