GTA 6 Has Taken Over Miami for Real — and Some Miami Officials Wish It Hadn't

Rockstar's launch marketing for Grand Theft Auto VI now covers the real Miami the game fictionalizes as Vice City, under a deal Miami Beach approved by a single vote in September. With the launch trailer out, the takeover running through December 31, and 33 days left until the November 19 release, the argument over what the game says about the city is happening in the city itself.

Vice City is no longer only fictional. Rockstar Games has begun the real-world Miami marketing takeover for Grand Theft Auto VI — branding across the city the game reimagines as Vice City, in the fictional state of Leonida — and the rollout has renewed an argument among Miami officials that began before a single poster went up. DualShockers reported that the deal divided lawmakers when it was approved and that discontent has continued as the promotional material has started to appear, with 33 days left until the game's November 19 launch.

A 4-3 Vote and at Least $3 Million

The takeover exists because a city said yes — barely. On September 10, 2026, the City of Miami Beach narrowly gave Rockstar the go-ahead to market GTA 6 in Miami, approving the deal by a 4-3 vote, DualShockers reported. Under the agreement, Rockstar will pay at least $3 million to the city, and game branding will take over the real-life location from October 15 to December 31, 2026 — a window that covers the launch and the holiday sales season.

A one-vote margin on a deal this visible guaranteed the debate would not end with the vote. DualShockers reported that the tight result has continued to fuel arguments and discontent among Miami officials, especially as GTA 6 promotional material has begun sweeping in across the city. The core of the opposition, as reported, is concern over the game's violent and criminal themes and how a city-endorsed celebration of them depicts Miami and its stance on law enforcement.

The Argument, Stated Plainly

The two sides of the Miami argument are both easy to state. Supporters of the deal can point to at least $3 million in revenue, a global spotlight on the city during the biggest entertainment launch of the year, and the simple fact that Vice City has been one of the most famous fictional versions of Miami in the world for more than two decades — the association exists whether the city blesses it or not.

Opponents, as DualShockers described their position, worry about what it means for the city to be paid to wrap itself in a franchise built on crime — particularly the message it sends about law enforcement in a city that also markets itself on safety and family tourism. That the vote was 4-3 rather than unanimous is itself the story: Miami is genuinely of two minds about its most famous fictional self, and the takeover has made that ambivalence visible on its own streets.

Meanwhile, the Launch Trailer Set the Terms

The takeover is timed to the final phase of the launch campaign. Rockstar released the GTA 6 launch trailer on October 15 with no advance warning — about 90 seconds focused on protagonists Jason and Lucia, showing more of Jason's military past and action sequences from missions, Gadgets 360 reported. The trailer features a new original song, 'Flower in a Hurricane,' by the French electronic duo Justice, whom Gadgets 360 confirmed as composers of the game's original score.

Speculation filled the gaps the trailer left, as it always does. Renewed discussion about whether Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies might appear in the game followed the trailer, but the footage contained no announcement or visible reference to digital assets, and Rockstar has offered no evidence of any crypto integration — reports through October instead point to a conventional in-game monetary system. Previously's standing rule for this launch applies: what Rockstar has not said, we do not print as fact.

'The Game Is Never Completely Settled'

The other development in launch week was a reminder of how Rockstar works. 'The game is never completely settled,' Rockstar director of technology Phil Hooker said, in comments quoted by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier in a video on why GTA 6 took more than eight years to develop and reported by TheGamer. 'We never have an exact blueprint,' Hooker said. 'Even within the last few months, we've changed things.'

After two delays on the road to November 19, any sentence containing the words 'still changing' will make some fans nervous. The reporting around Hooker's comments frames them the other way: as a description of Rockstar's normal process on a project of this scope, not a delay signal. The launch date stands at November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC release yet announced. Our full GTA coverage lives in the games section and the GTA Vault.

33 Days Out

What Miami is arguing about, the rest of the industry is simply watching. A marketing takeover of a real city by its fictional counterpart — approved by one vote, priced at millions, running for eleven weeks — is the scale of launch this game now operates at, and the backlash is part of the same phenomenon: GTA 6 is large enough that a city council vote about it is national news.

The takeover runs through December 31. The game arrives November 19. Between now and then, expect the posters to multiply, the argument to continue, and Rockstar — as is its habit — to say almost nothing at all. Previously will keep the countdown honest in our GTA VI watch coverage.
