Private Jet Skids Off Runway at Harry Reid, Hits Fence; FAA Ground Stop Snarls Las Vegas Flights

A Dassault Falcon 50 with eight people aboard aborted its takeoff on Runway 1L late Sunday morning and slid into Harry Reid International Airport’s perimeter fence. No one was hurt — but two closed runways and an FAA ground stop left hundreds of flights delayed into the afternoon.

A private jet taking off from Harry Reid International Airport late Sunday morning never got airborne. The Dassault Falcon 50, departing on Runway 1L at about 11 a.m., aborted its takeoff, skidded off the runway and slid into the airport’s perimeter fence — an accident that injured no one but shut down two runways, triggered an FAA ground stop and snarled flights in and out of Las Vegas for the rest of the afternoon.

“At approximately 11 a.m., upon departure, a general aviation aircraft skid off runway 1L at LAS and made contact with the perimeter fence. There are no known injuries at this time,” the airport said in a statement carried by the New York Post and Simple Flying. “Runways 1R and 1L will be closed for inspection, and travelers may experience some delays. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

Eight people aboard, bound for Toronto

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a Dassault Falcon 50 with eight people aboard, bound for Toronto Pearson Airport in Canada, according to Vegas Daily Wire’s account of the FAA’s statement, and said the pilot aborted the takeoff before the aircraft left the ground. The FAA said it will investigate. Airport spokesperson Monika Bertaki told The Associated Press she could not say what caused the plane to leave the runway.

The jet, tail number N200SG, had flown into Las Vegas from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport earlier on Sunday before its scheduled onward departure to Toronto, Simple Flying reported from flight-tracking data. FAA registry records cited by the New York Post list the three-engine business jet as owned by Jacks Wings LLC of Boca Raton, Florida. The Falcon 50 is a long-range business jet built by France’s Dassault Aviation; production has ended, but the type remains in service with private owners and charter operators, Simple Flying noted.

A flight-tracking replay described by the New York Post shows the jet taxiing onto the runway, then continuing past the end of the pavement and veering to the right before coming to a stop. Tracking data alone cannot establish why the crew rejected the takeoff or whether a mechanical problem played a part, Simple Flying cautioned — and officials have offered no cause.

Two runways closed, ground stop ordered

With the jet stopped against the fence, the airport closed both of its north–south runways — 1L and its parallel partner 1R — for inspection. The FAA issued a ground stop for Las Vegas-bound traffic, citing an “aircraft emergency,” the New York Post reported, and airport officials confirmed to FOX5 that the stop was tied to the runway incident, according to Vegas Daily Wire. KTNV, Las Vegas’s ABC affiliate, reported the same sequence: an aborted takeoff, a jet off the runway and a response that closed two runways.

As of mid-afternoon, there was no announced time for the runways to reopen. Vegas Daily Wire, in an update posted at about 2:20 p.m., said officials had given no reopening time. The airport’s remaining two runways — the long east–west pair — stayed in service, which kept Harry Reid open but at sharply reduced capacity on a busy Sunday.

The ripple: hundreds of flights delayed

The FAA’s own real-time status page for Harry Reid, checked by Previously at about 3:05 p.m. Sunday, showed a traffic management program still in effect for arriving traffic because of the emergency, with Las Vegas-bound flights delayed an average of 1 hour and 10 minutes and airborne arrival delays of 15 minutes or less. FOX5 reported the same 1-hour-10-minute average from the FAA’s site earlier in the afternoon.

The delay count climbed through the day. FOX5, reading FlightAware’s tally, put the number at roughly 330 delayed flights; Focal News, also citing FlightAware, reported more than 350 delayed flights by mid-afternoon. Harry Reid is one of the busiest airports in the United States — it had already handled more than 34 million passengers in 2026 as of August, according to figures cited in The Associated Press’s report — and Sunday is one of its heaviest departure days of the week, as weekend visitors head home.

The airport urged travelers to check with their airlines for current flight information, advice the FAA echoes on its status page. Travelers with Sunday evening departures were the most exposed: even after a ground stop lifts, the delays banked up behind it take hours to unwind.

What officials have not said

Almost everything about why this happened remains unanswered. Officials have not said what prompted the crew to reject the takeoff, how fast the jet was traveling, or how badly the aircraft and the fence were damaged. The airport has said only that updates will follow, and the FAA’s investigation is just beginning. Rejected takeoffs are a trained-for maneuver — stopping rather than flying is exactly what the procedure calls for when something looks wrong on the roll — but a jet that cannot stop on the pavement turns a routine call into an investigation.

This is a developing story. Previously will update it as the airport and the FAA release more information, including any reopening time for Runways 1L and 1R. First published Sunday, October 18, 2026.
