Inter needed an answer, and they gave one in Rotterdam.
Three days after losing the Milan derby 3-1, with two defeats already on their Champions League record and Alessandro Bastoni suspended, Cristian Chivu's side went to De Kuip — a ground Feyenoord had already beaten Como on this season — and controlled the night from the eighth minute.
That was when Yann Bisseck pressed high to win the ball back, turned between two defenders and swept a left-foot finish into the far bottom corner. It was the centre-back's first-ever Champions League goal, and Inter's earliest goal in any game since August. Bisseck, named man of the match by Flashscore, admitted afterwards he had not planned the celebration: "The right response. I celebrated however it came to me — I wasn't prepared, after eight minutes. Scoring is always great, like helping the team and reacting like this after a bad defeat."
Feyenoord's one real moment came from Anis Hadj Moussa, who dribbled past Federico Dimarco and forced Josep Martínez into a sharp near-post save. Just as the hosts looked like they were getting into the game, Inter struck again. Djed Spence got down the right and stood up a deflected cross, and Francesco Pio Esposito headed in from four yards, the ball going in off the underside of the bar. Piotr Zielinski had already drilled one just wide and tested the goalkeeper from distance before half-time. Nine minutes after it, he got his goal — carrying the ball forward as Feyenoord backed off, and firing in off the inside of the post. Esposito thought he had a fourth on 66 minutes, tapping in a Dimarco cross, but he was ruled offside by inches. The second half was also briefly held up when fireworks launched from outside the stadium landed on the pitch and the roof. By then the contest was long over.
The derby response
Chivu called it Inter being "the best version of ourselves" in a stadium that is not easy to play in, and said consistency is what brings results. The numbers back the response: this was a second straight Champions League win after losing their first two, and it extended Inter's unbeaten run against Dutch clubs in the competition to 14 games.
Inter climb to 14th in the league phase on six points, two points off the top eight. Feyenoord stay on three points in 30th, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst did not dress it up: "The reality is that we currently have three points from four matches, which, frankly, isn't good enough." Inter host Como in Serie A on Sunday, then Stuttgart in this competition on November 25. Feyenoord go to Heerenveen on Sunday and host Porto in the Champions League on November 24.
