Wisconsin Wins Massive Recruiting Battle: Five-Star 2028 Edge Jalanie George Commits to the Badgers

The 2028 five-star edge from Desert Edge High School chose the Badgers over Auburn, Miami, and Washington — Wisconsin’s biggest recruiting win of the Luke Fickell era and its first five-star defensive commit since 2003.

Less than a week after Wisconsin knocked off No. 13 Penn State for Luke Fickell’s first signature win, the Badgers pulled off another stunner — this one on the recruiting trail. Jalanie George, a 2028 five-star edge rusher from Goodyear, Arizona, announced his commitment to Wisconsin on Thursday, live on the Rivals YouTube channel, choosing the Badgers over Auburn, Miami, and Washington.

“AGTG Go Badgers,” George wrote on social media, punctuating the biggest recruiting victory of the Fickell era. The 6-foot-4, roughly 245-pound edge defender from Desert Edge High School is viewed as a five-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite, ranked as high as the No. 20 overall player and No. 5 edge in the 2028 cycle, and No. 2 among players in Arizona. He becomes the fifth-highest-ranked recruit in program history and the first five-star defensive commitment at Wisconsin since 2003.

Beating the blue bloods

What makes this win land so hard is who the Badgers beat. George held more than 35 scholarship offers, with Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, and USC all pursuing him at various points. Washington was considered a heavy favorite for much of the process — two of George’s Desert Edge teammates, four-star quarterback Blake Roskopf and three-star receiver Zerek Sidney, are already committed to the Huskies — and Auburn and Miami were firmly in the fight until the end.

Wisconsin was relatively late to the party. The Badgers offered George a scholarship on May 19, 2025, and had to work to get him on campus. His first and only visit to Madison came on Sept. 12, when he watched Wisconsin beat Western Illinois 36-9. Less than three weeks later, he announced his commitment and gave the Badgers the cornerstone of their 2028 class. Outside linebackers coach Matt Mitchell led the late push that got George to Madison and kept him there.

Production to match the ranking

George has produced like a player deserving that attention. As a sophomore at Desert Edge, he recorded 54 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks. He has had a strong start to his junior season as well, with 24 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and a sack through four games. Across a 29-game varsity career, he has piled up 141 tackles, 32.5 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks.

Scouts love the physical profile as much as the numbers: George already has the length and frame to hold up on the edge, with room to add weight without sacrificing the burst and movement skills that made him one of the most coveted defensive prospects in the country. He projects as a Day 1 impact player if things click in Madison.

A class taking shape

George is Wisconsin’s third commitment in the 2028 cycle, joining four-star linebacker Cale Britt and three-star interior offensive lineman Brock Barrows. The group is already ranked as high as the 6th-best recruiting class in the country and 2nd-best in the Big Ten by 247Sports. It is the kind of early momentum that can compound — elite recruits attract elite recruits, and a five-star flag planted in Arizona gives Wisconsin a story to tell on the trail.

There is also a relationship component worth noting. Desert Edge is quietly becoming one of Wisconsin’s strongest recruiting footholds out West, and landing a five-star out of a talent-rich Phoenix-area program is the kind of result that validates years of investment in the region.

Why the edge matters

Wisconsin’s outside linebacker room has been a quiet priority for two cycles, and landing a five-star edge two years out is the kind of move that changes how the rest of the class gets built. Premium pass rushers are the scarcest commodity in the sport — the players who can bend the edge, hold up against the run, and collapse a pocket without help. When a program like Wisconsin wins one head-to-head against the Alabamas and Georgias of the world, it does more than fill a roster spot: it gives every other elite defender in the cycle a reason to take the Badgers’ call.

The Arizona-to-Madison pipeline is becoming a real thing, and this commitment is its strongest proof of concept yet. Desert Edge has quietly turned into one of Wisconsin’s most productive out-of-state footholds, and George is now the crown jewel of that investment. With Washington — the heavy favorite for much of this recruitment — left holding two of George’s high school teammates but not the headliner, the Badgers can credibly tell the next five-star that Madison is a place where the biggest fish in the pond actually choose to land.

The Fickell momentum

The timing tells the whole story of a program gathering momentum. Wisconsin is 3-1, its best four-game start under Fickell, after a 24-20 upset of Penn State in Week 4 to open the Big Ten slate 1-0. The 2027 class is currently ranked No. 24 in the country, headlined by safety Mekhi Williams and running back Kingston Allen. Now the 2028 class has a five-star headliner two years out from signing day.

The skeptical Badger fan will say, “Let’s see if George makes it to signing day.” Fair enough — verbal commitments are promises, not signatures. But a five-star out-of-state recruit just committed to Wisconsin under Luke Fickell, beating Washington, Auburn, and Miami head-to-head. For a program trying to prove it can win the fights that separate contenders from everyone else, that is a very good night.
