Katniss Everdeen is officially coming back — and this time it isn't a rumor, a leak, or a hopeful headline. Jennifer Lawrence confirmed it herself on Wednesday's episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, telling host Alex Cooper what it was like to play Katniss again for the first time in 11 years, in the upcoming prequel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
"It was unbelievable," Lawrence said. "It was so crazy. It was the same crew. It was the same AD, who I've worked with a million times because I love him. And with Josh [Hutcherson] and Woody [Harrelson] … it was so emotional."
Lawrence last played Katniss in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 in 2015, closing a run of four films that began in 2012 and turned her into the face of a franchise that has grossed $3.3 billion worldwide to date. Reports that she and Hutcherson would return for a scene in the prequel first surfaced last December — Variety reported the two were expected back as Katniss and Peeta, and Entertainment Weekly confirmed the same month — but Lawrence herself stayed coy about it for months. On Call Her Daddy, she stopped being coy. And in talking about the reunion, she also let it slip that Woody Harrelson will be back as Haymitch Abernathy, a return that hadn't been part of the earlier reporting.
The shape of the return comes straight from Suzanne Collins' novel. Sunrise on the Reaping, published in 2025, is Haymitch's story: a 16-year-old Haymitch, played by Joseph Zada, is thrown into the 50th Hunger Games — the Second Quarter Quell, with twice the usual number of tributes — 24 years before Katniss ever volunteered. But the book closes with a flash-forward epilogue that catches up with Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch years later, and the film is following the book's lead. That's the door the original three walk back through.
"It was so beautiful," Lawrence said of filming with Hutcherson again. "Josh and I didn't walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other." Harrelson's arrival, meanwhile, was pure Haymitch: "Woody, obviously, came through the window of my hotel room uninvited," she joked. "It wouldn't be the same if he listened to boundaries or used a door."
The prequel itself is stacked. Francis Lawrence — who directed Catching Fire, both Mockingjay films and 2023's prequel The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes — is back behind the camera, working from a screenplay by Billy Ray, who wrote the original 2012 film. Around Zada, the cast runs deep: Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Glenn Close, Billy Porter, and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow. Lionsgate releases the film in theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026.
There is a pleasing symmetry to how Lawrence got here. She was 20 years old when she first signed on to play Katniss, and on Call Her Daddy she talked about worrying back then about what a franchise this size would do to her career and her personal life. Three years ago, during her No Hard Feelings press tour, she told Variety she was "totally" open to playing the role again: "If Katniss ever could ever come back into my life, 100 percent." Now she has — on the franchise's terms and, by her telling, with the same crew and the same people beside her.
And because no Hunger Games conversation is ever really finished, Lawrence also reignited the fandom's oldest argument: she told Cooper she has always been Team Gale — "even after he killed my sister," she laughed, a nod to Gale's hand in the bomb design that killed Prim. Peeta may have gotten the girl and the epilogue, but the debate, apparently, survives everything.
Previously's Take: This is how you bring a franchise face back — not with a reboot, not with a torch-passing, but through the story's own epilogue, confirmed out loud by the star herself after a year of reports she wouldn't touch. The confirmation turned a casting note into the morning's biggest entertainment story. November 20 is now circled on a lot of calendars.
