Kentucky Went for Two and the Win — Stunning No. 10 LSU 35-34 in Overtime

Kenny Minchey ran in a two-point conversion untouched in overtime to lift Kentucky past No. 10 LSU 35-34 at Kroger Field — the Wildcats' second top-10 win of the season, and a $500,000 field-storming fine.

The short version: Kentucky didn't just beat No. 10 LSU on Saturday night — the Wildcats ripped the win away in the most dramatic way possible. Trailing in overtime at a rain-soaked Kroger Field, Kentucky scored on a 1-yard C.J. Baxter run, then sent quarterback Kenny Minchey straight up the middle for a two-point conversion that nobody touched. Final: Kentucky 35, LSU 34. The fans stormed the field. The SEC will send a $500,000 bill. And Lane Kiffin's $40 million roster is suddenly 4-2 with its playoff hopes flickering.

How the wildest finish of the season unfolded

The fourth quarter was a slow-motion collapse for LSU — and a masterclass in hanging around for Kentucky. The Tigers led 27-24 late after quarterback Sam Leavitt's 15-yard scoring run, and they had every chance to salt it away. Instead, Kentucky's Jamarrion Harkless sacked Leavitt and forced a fumble that Tavion Gadson recovered at the LSU 13. Kicker Adam Zouagui, who had already missed from 42 and 26 yards, missed again from 26 — and LSU still led 27-24 with just over three minutes to play.

"When the chance comes in the fourth quarter, you can't let 'em hang around," Kiffin said afterward. "We had the ball ahead and then we turned the ball over. And another chance to end it there so they don't get it back."

LSU couldn't run out the clock and punted with under two minutes left, Kentucky out of timeouts. The Wildcats took over at their own 19 with 97 seconds left, and Zouagui — the same kicker who had missed twice — drilled a 33-yarder with 12 seconds left to tie it at 27 and force overtime.

Overtime: LSU kicked, Kentucky went for the win

LSU got the ball first in overtime and scored on Leavitt's 15-yard run, then — conservatively, fatefully — kicked the extra point for a 34-27 lead. Kentucky answered: Minchey hit freshman wide receiver Kenny Darby for 22 yards on third-and-8 to set up first-and-goal, Baxter punched it in from the 1, and after both coaches burned timeouts trying to ice the moment, Minchey ran untouched up the middle for two. Ballgame.

The gutsy call fit the night. It was Kentucky's second win in as many weeks on a do-or-die two-point try, and it gave the Wildcats their second top-10 win of the season — after taking down Texas A&M on the road in Week 3. This one came at home, on homecoming, in front of a crowd that poured onto the field the moment Minchey crossed the goal line.

The numbers behind the upset

Minchey finished 23 of 36 for 246 yards — 206 of them after halftime, when Kentucky needed every blade of it. Baxter ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including a 77-yard burst on the game's first play that announced Kentucky wasn't intimidated. Darby, a freshman who had originally committed to LSU before flipping, had four catches for 79 yards — his 22-yard overtime grab set up the winning sequence.

Leavitt was 25 of 34 for 275 yards and two touchdowns, but the turnovers told the story: an interception and the killer fumble. In a surreal twist, LSU wide receiver Jackson Harris threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Roman Mothershed in the fourth quarter — the kind of trick play that works until it doesn't. "This goes on all of us," Kiffin said. "We had all kinds of chances to close the game out and win the game, and didn't do it."

What it costs, and what it means

The field-storming will cost Kentucky $500,000. The SEC flattened its fine structure in May 2025 — field rushing is field rushing now, first time or eighteenth, at a half-million a pop — and a sea of blue flooding Kroger Field made the penalty academic. Nobody in Lexington was thinking about the invoice.

The bigger bill is the one coming due in Baton Rouge. Kiffin was the story of the sport entering the season after leaving Ole Miss ahead of last year's playoff, buying the nation's top-ranked transfer class and talking about heightened expectations. He makes $13 million a year. His roster reportedly cost a shade over $40 million. And now LSU is 4-2, 1-2 in the SEC, 0-2 in true road games under Kiffin, with Mississippi State, Alabama, Texas and Tennessee still ahead. A playoff spot, the entire point of the Kiffin project, is very much in doubt.

Kentucky, meanwhile, is 5-1 and 3-1 in the SEC in Will Stein's first season — and suddenly playing with house money. When a team converts the two-pointer twice in two weeks and storms the field on homecoming, the season has already delivered. Everything from here is a bonus.

Stein's first season keeps delivering

Zoom out, and this is a remarkable first act for Will Stein. Kentucky is 5-1 with two top-10 wins — on the road at Texas A&M and now at home against LSU, sealed by a gutsy two-point call that will live in program lore. The Wildcats have played overtime thrillers, survived their kicker's worst night, and stormed the field on homecoming. Whatever the final record says, this team has already given its fans a season's worth of memories by mid-October.

For LSU, the questions are darker and more expensive. Two road losses, a roster built to win now, and a schedule that doesn't ease up. Kiffin has always thrived as the chaos agent; now he has to be the fixer. Saturday night in Lexington was supposed to be a business trip. It became the night Kentucky announced it isn't going anywhere.
