Keyone Jenkins, UCF Stun No. 2 BYU 39-31 in Double Overtime — the First Top-Five Win in Program History

One week after BYU beat Notre Dame to end the Irish’s 16-game win streak, the No. 2 Cougars lost their own perfect season in the Bounce House: a 39–31 double-overtime defeat to a 3–3 UCF team whose backup quarterback threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns, whose defense turned BYU away at the 1-yard line, and whose winning touchdown existed only because BYU roughed the kicker on a made field goal.

The Short Version

Keyone Jenkins was not supposed to be the story of UCF’s season. The junior opened the year as the backup, and he took over the offense only when starter Alonza Barnett III went down. On Saturday in Orlando, making his fifth straight start on homecoming, Jenkins threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns, ran for a fourth score, and quarterbacked unranked, 3–3 UCF to a 39–31 double-overtime win over No. 2 BYU — the first top-five win in program history, sealed by a goal-line stand, a blocked field goal, and the strangest roughing penalty of the season.

One week after Notre Dame

BYU arrived 6–0 and ranked second in the country, seven days removed from the biggest win of its season: a 28–24 defeat of No. 8 Notre Dame that snapped the Irish’s 16-game winning streak. The Cougars looked the part early, marching 84 yards on the opening drive and scoring on Bear Bachmeier’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Kyler Kasper. Then UCF scored 17 straight points: a Will Stone field goal, a short Landen Chambers touchdown run, and Chambers again on a 21-yard catch from Jenkins. Bachmeier’s touchdown run late in the second quarter cut the Knights’ lead to 17–14 at the half.

Sione Moa’s touchdown run put BYU back in front 21–17 in the third quarter, and Jenkins answered with his legs — taking it in himself to restore the UCF lead at 24–21. Behind him, the Knights quietly controlled the afternoon: Duke Watson ran for 94 yards, UCF outgained BYU 463–373, and the Knights never turned the ball over. A BYU field goal early in the fourth quarter tied it 24–24, and that is where the game stopped making sense.

The stand, the block, and a helmet

UCF drove to the BYU 1-yard line with the game on the line and under two minutes to play — and BYU’s defense produced the stand of its season, turning the Knights away on fourth down with 1:49 left.

It still was not over. The Knights got the ball back with 49 seconds left, and Stone lined up a 46-yard field goal to win it with two seconds on the clock. BYU blocked it. Stone recovered his own blocked kick — and lost his helmet as he was brought down, which triggered a 10-second runoff that ended regulation before anyone in the Bounce House had finished arguing about it. Twenty-four all, and on to overtime.

Double overtime, and the flag that decided it

BYU struck first in overtime, and it took a freshman to do it: facing third-and-13, Bachmeier found Legend Glasker for a 28-yard touchdown and a 31–24 lead. UCF answered in a single play — Jenkins scrambled and hit Josh Derry for 25 yards, 31–31.

In the second overtime, UCF’s drive stalled and Stone drilled a 26-yard field goal for a 34–31 lead. Except the play was not finished. BYU was flagged for roughing the kicker: the points came off the board, the Knights took a fresh set of downs at the 4, and two plays later Jenkins found tight end Grayson Brousseau for the go-ahead touchdown. Jenkins then hit Tyren Hornes — who finished with six catches for 137 yards — for the two-point conversion, and UCF led 39–31.

BYU still had its chance. Kasper’s 17-yard catch — his sixth of a 129-yard day — moved the Cougars to the UCF 8, but a sack pushed them back and three straight incompletions ended it, Bachmeier’s final pass falling incomplete on fourth down with the Bounce House shaking around him.

Then the fans stormed the field at the Bounce House — the biggest win in program history, celebrated exactly the way it deserved.

The reaction

The home team’s official account needed six words for all of it:

Then the Knights posted the graphic:

What it means

The win is the first over a top-five opponent in UCF program history, and the highest-ranked win the Knights have ever recorded. It lands exactly one week after BYU’s own program-defining moment, and it scrambles the Big 12: Texas Tech was also upset on Saturday, 37–24 at Cincinnati — BYU is the seventh top-10 team to lose in the last two weeks — and the list of unbeaten teams in the FBS is down to three — Miami, Utah and UCLA. UCF improves to 4–3 (2–2 in the Big 12); BYU falls to 6–1 (3–1). The Knights travel to Baylor on Friday; the Cougars return home to face Arizona State, carrying a loss that will follow them into every playoff conversation for the rest of the season.

By the Numbers

293 — Jenkins’ passing yards on 25-of-41, with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions

4 — touchdowns Jenkins accounted for (3 passing, 1 rushing on 11 carries for 35 yards)

137 — receiving yards for Tyren Hornes on 6 catches, plus the two-point conversion that made it 39–31

463–373 — total yards, UCF over BYU; the Knights also won the rushing battle 170–116 behind Duke Watson’s 94 yards

1:49 — time left in regulation when BYU’s goal-line stand kept UCF out of the end zone at the 1

3 — unbeaten FBS teams remaining: Miami, Utah and UCLA

Read the table and the argument makes itself: UCF won every team category that matters — 90 more yards, eight more first downs, the ground game by 54, and not a single turnover — against the No. 2 team in the country, with its backup quarterback. BYU’s defense made the stand of the season at its own 1, and the Cougars still needed a blocked kick and a runoff just to reach overtime. When the one flag of the second overtime wiped out a made field goal, Jenkins cashed it in two plays. That is not a fluke table; that is the better team on the day, start to finish.
