THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2026 — CHICAGO
The 2024 NFL Draft was always going to be judged on nights like this one. Tonight at Soldier Field, the Chicago Bears host the New England Patriots to open Week 7 on Thursday Night Football — Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in 2024, against Drake Maye, the No. 3 pick, in their second meeting as professionals. The first one, a 19-3 New England win when both were rookies on bad teams, feels almost irrelevant now, as Full Press Coverage put it this week: both quarterbacks, and both organizations, are in completely different places. Both teams are 4-2. Both believe they are playing January football. And the matchup carries a little history besides — it is a rematch of Super Bowl XX, fondly remembered in Chicago, USA Today noted, especially in the wake of Mike Ditka's recent death.
Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. ET — 5:15 p.m. PT — at Soldier Field, streaming on Prime Video, with Al Michaels on play-by-play and Kirk Herbstreit as the analyst, according to the Arizona Republic's Week 7 broadcast listings. Chicago is a 3-point favorite with a total of 50.5, according to FanDuel odds published by USA Today's For The Win on Thursday morning. Chicago is looking for its second straight win in the first of three consecutive prime-time games ahead of its Week 10 bye, Bears Wire reported, and returns home after a two-game road trip. New England, the defending AFC champion, arrives as the hotter team.
Maye's three weeks changed New England's season
Three weeks ago, the conversation around Maye was uncomfortable — turnovers piling up, a 1-2 start, a quarterback who finished second in MVP voting last season looking like he had taken a step backward. Then something flipped. The Patriots have won three straight, over the Buffalo Bills, the Las Vegas Raiders and, last week, the New York Jets, 26-19. Maye has thrown 10 touchdown passes against one interception over that span, including three against the Jets — an NFL-best 10 touchdown passes in the last three weeks, with a 119.3 passer rating, leading qualified quarterbacks in EPA per dropback over the stretch, according to NFL.com's Week 7 preview cited by Full Press Coverage.
He is getting help at the right time. Wide receiver A.J. Brown returned against the Jets from the high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 1; his first game back was quiet — three catches for 27 yards — but he drew 10 targets, Sportsbook Wire reported, the clearest sign of where Maye wants to go with the ball as Brown's timing returns. The concern for New England is in front of Maye instead: the Patriots lost multiple starters on the offensive line against the Jets, and starting guards Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown will not play tonight, according to For The Win's injury report. A short week, a road game, and a patchwork interior line is a real problem — because Chicago's defense just got its loudest piece back.
Williams came back dealing — and so did Kyler Gordon
Chicago's 4-2 was built while its quarterback watched. Williams missed three games with a hamstring injury, and his return last week against Atlanta was surgical: 30 completions in 36 attempts for 305 yards and a touchdown in a 31-23 win, according to Sportsbook Wire, with running back D'Andre Swift scoring twice. Chicago's defense, meanwhile, held an Atlanta rushing attack that came in ranked fourth in the NFL at 149.5 yards per game to just 63 yards.
The other return may matter just as much tonight. Cornerback Kyler Gordon played his first game of the season against Atlanta after a calf injury and was, in Bears Wire's words, a heat-seeking missile off the edge — three sacks and two forced fumbles. That is the duel inside the duel: both of these defenses blitz, and the numbers say the quarterbacks handle it very differently. According to Pro Football Focus figures cited in Yahoo Sports' game preview, Maye has posted a 102.8 passer rating against the blitz this season, while Williams has recorded a 79.9 — and New England's defense ranks sixth in blitz rate, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. If the Patriots' pressure gets home against Williams the way Gordon got home against Atlanta, the draft-class argument gets loud in the other direction.
Chicago has its own absences: running back Kyle Monangai will miss another game, and linebacker T.J. Edwards is likely to miss his second straight, according to For The Win. (Previously covered the early-week injury picture in its Week 7 injury report.) But home field, a short week for the visitor, and a quarterback completing passes at the rate Williams managed against Atlanta — over 80 percent — give the Bears a genuine claim to favoritism, which is exactly what the 3-point line says.
The two quarterbacks have known each other since high school, NFL.com noted this week, and they will be compared for as long as both are in the league — that was guaranteed the night Williams went first and Maye went third. What has changed is the stakes. The rookie meeting was two famous prospects surviving bad teams. Tonight is two 4-2 teams, a Super Bowl rematch layered underneath, and a national audience deciding which young quarterback's autumn is real. Maye's last three weeks say his is. Williams gets the last word tonight, at home, under the lights — which is precisely what Thursday night is for. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video; more Week 7 coverage lives on the Previously sports front.
