La Liga's Perfect Chase: Barcelona Are Eight for Eight — Now Comes the Hard Part

Barcelona have won all eight and lead by five, Raphinha tops the Pichichi with 12 — but Matchday 9 sends Barça to red-hot Betis, brings Sevilla to the Bernabéu, and puts the season's first Clásico nine days over the horizon.

Eight rounds in, La Liga has a runaway leader but not a runaway race — not yet. Barcelona have been perfect: eight wins from eight, 34 goals scored, and a five-point cushion over the field, according to ESPN's standings. But the calendar is about to test them. Matchday 9 sends Barcelona to the league's other form team, Real Betis; Real Madrid, six points back and already beaten twice, cannot blink at home against Sevilla; and nine days after that comes the season's first Clásico.

Matchday 8 closed the book on Monday with a 3-3 draw between Levante and Sevilla, but the weekend's statements came on Saturday. Barcelona beat Getafe 3-0 to keep the perfect record intact — and did it without Raphinha, the league's leading scorer, who sat out through injury, BBC Sport reported. At the Bernabéu, Real Madrid edged Villarreal 1-0 on summer signing Yan Diomande's first goal for the club, a night that ended with Vinícius Júnior sent off. Atlético de Madrid won 2-1 at Alavés to hold second place, and on Sunday Real Betis beat Osasuna to join Atlético on 19 points, Real Sociedad beat Deportivo La Coruña, and Racing Santander drew 2-2 with Valencia behind Yassir Zabiri's seventh goal of the season.

The table, in plain numbers. Barcelona: played eight, won eight, 24 points, a +27 goal difference. Atlético and Betis: 19 points each, one defeat apiece. Real Madrid: 18 points in fourth, with two defeats already — 2-1 in the derby at Atlético and 1-0 at Betis, the two results that turned a title race into a chase. Sevilla sit fifth on 14. At the bottom, Málaga are winless on four points, Valencia have five, and Elche and Levante six each. Athletic Club, on eight points, have played only six matches — two games in hand on most of the league and a slow-burning factor in the European places.

The middle is a traffic jam, and the bottom is a warning. Eight clubs — Celta Vigo, Athletic Club, Villarreal, Espanyol, Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, Racing Santander and Osasuna — sit locked together on eight points, spanning ninth to 16th and separated only by goal difference. And for all the noise around Madrid’s wobble, the defence is not the problem: seven goals conceded matches Barcelona’s as the league’s joint-best. The gap is at the other end, where Barcelona’s 34 goals dwarf Madrid’s 19. Down below, Valencia’s start is the alarm nobody can silence: one win, five points, 15 goals conceded — a giant of Spanish football sitting 19th in October, with Athletic Club’s visit on Saturday suddenly looking like a season-shaping night at Mestalla.

The Pichichi race has a surprise leader. Raphinha's 12 goals are five clear of the chasing pack — Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, Rayo Vallecano's Sergio Camello and Racing's Zabiri, all on seven, per USA TODAY's Pichichi tracker. Mbappé won the award in each of the past two seasons; this year he is the one doing the chasing. None of the pack scored on Matchday 8, which makes Raphinha's fitness the biggest team-news question in Spain this week: Barcelona will want their top scorer back for the hardest away trip of their season so far.

What makes the perfect start more ominous is its breadth. Barcelona’s 34 goals have come with their top scorer missing time, a summer rebuild already bedded in — Rodri anchoring midfield, with Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi added to the attack — and a +27 goal difference that works like an extra point in any tiebreak. Madrid, by contrast, rebuilt too and still look like a team searching for its best eleven: the Bernabéu booed during the Villarreal win, and a one-goal margin against a side Madrid expect to dominate at home is not the standard there.

Matchday 9 opens Friday with Deportivo hosting Levante at the Riazor, then Saturday brings the round's centerpiece. Atlético travel to Espanyol in the early game and Villarreal host Elche, but the evening belongs to Seville: Real Betis vs. Barcelona at La Cartuja. Betis have lost once all season, have already beaten Real Madrid, and will treat this as a measuring stick for their own top-four ambitions. A Barcelona slip there opens the door for everyone. Valencia, 19th with five points and six goals scored, host Athletic Club in Saturday's late game under the Mestalla lights.

Sunday closes at the Bernabéu with Real Madrid vs. Sevilla (8 p.m. local). Madrid's arithmetic is unforgiving: drop points, and the Clásico becomes close to must-win before October is even out. Sevilla, fifth and awkward for anyone, will not arrive to oblige. Osasuna host Racing and Celta Vigo host Alavés in Sunday's other fixtures, and Getafe vs. Rayo Vallecano finishes the round on Monday night.

And then, the summit. Matchday 10 ends on Sunday, October 25, with the season's first Clásico in Barcelona — with a Champions League midweek squeezed in between for both clubs. If Barcelona survive Betis and Madrid handle Sevilla, the Clásico arrives as first against the chasers with the gap at five or six points: close enough for one night to change the season, far enough that Barcelona can lose and still lead. Eight rounds of perfection bought them that cushion. The next three rounds decide what it is worth.
