If you have outdoor plans in Las Vegas this week, the calendar is doing you a favor: it is putting the good weather first.
Monday and Tuesday are sunny with highs around 82 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas — the tail end of the warm, dry stretch that carried the valley through the weekend. Tuesday carries only a slight chance of storms late in the day. No weather alerts were in effect for the valley as of Sunday night.
The turn comes Wednesday. The day starts mostly sunny and breezy with a high near 80, but storms become likely Wednesday night, with the chance of rain reaching about 60 percent after dark. Thursday is the wet day of the week: showers and thunderstorms likely, a rain chance around 70 percent, and a high that falls to about 72 — roughly ten degrees cooler than Monday. Forecasters warn of gusty winds and quick downpours with the midweek storms, the kind that put water on desert roads faster than the roads can shed it — a hazard Las Vegas drivers were reminded of earlier this month, when heavy rain from the remnants of a tropical system flooded Koval Lane and nearby roads along the Grand Prix route and briefly closed them, FOX5 reported.
Behind the storms, the weekend resets. Friday is sunny with a high near 70, Saturday near 71, and Sunday mostly sunny around 73 — jacket weather in the mornings, with lows in the upper 50s, and the kind of clear fall days the valley trades on in late October.
The roads: Grand Prix season is a lane season
The weather is only half the commute story. Construction for the Las Vegas Grand Prix — run November 19-21 — is in its heavy build phase, and the overnight lane map around the center Strip stays busy all week, as FOX5 has reported through the build.
On Las Vegas Boulevard between Sands Avenue and Harmon Avenue, lane reductions run overnight, midnight to 9 a.m., Monday through Friday, continuing through October 30, with one lane kept open in each direction. Further south, between Flamingo Road and Bellagio Drive, two southbound lanes and the sidewalk are closed around the clock through November 9 for Bellagio Fountain Club work. Hotel access remains open, but drivers should expect lane shifts, and rideshare pickups near Bellagio and The Cosmopolitan can take longer than usual.
Koval Lane, the Strip’s usual pressure valve, gets its own squeeze: between Rochelle Avenue and Westchester Drive, Koval is down to one lane each way from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., October 19 through 23. Sands Avenue carries lane closures around the clock through race week — one eastbound lane from Las Vegas Boulevard to the Palazzo garage, one westbound lane from Manhattan Street to the Palazzo garage, and a closed northbound left-turn lane at Koval.
Bus riders are in the pattern too. Southbound Deuce stops on the Strip are closed on weekdays from midnight to 9 a.m. through October 30. Stop 3590 near Bellagio and The Cosmopolitan is closed through November 9, Route 119 stops on Koval between Rochelle and Westchester are closed, and so is stop 2505 on westbound Sands. The RTC posts service changes at 702-228-RIDE (7433), option 4, and Grand Prix traffic text alerts are available by texting F1LV to 31996.
And one warning that is not about the Strip at all: North Las Vegas police describe Las Vegas Boulevard North near Carey Avenue as an active work zone with a road closure and traffic-control devices in place — the same intersection where a fatal head-on crash early Sunday began with a driver entering the closed section at speed. Slow down there, especially at night.
How to play the week
Locals have heard versions of this advice before, but the week lines up unusually cleanly. Do the outdoor things Monday, Tuesday or from Friday on. Expect Wednesday night and Thursday to be the slow, wet commute days, and give wet roads extra room — desert pavement carrying months of accumulated oil is at its slickest in the first hour of rain. After dark on the Strip corridor, treat Koval as a last resort rather than a shortcut, and add time to any trip that crosses Sands, Harmon or Flamingo.
Schedules can shift if the midweek storms arrive stronger than forecast — the Grand Prix build has already had one weather scare this month, when the flooding along Koval came during the window in which crews were installing the temporary Flamingo vehicular bridge, an intersection closure that took Flamingo Road and Koval Lane out of service around the clock for five days. Previously will update this outlook if the National Weather Service changes the storm timing or adds alerts.
