Two Fatal Crashes in North Las Vegas Within Five Hours Early Sunday

A pedestrian was killed on Cheyenne Avenue just after midnight, and a Camaro driver died in a head-on crash at Las Vegas Boulevard and Carey Avenue before dawn — two separate investigations on a weekend when valley police were already pleading with drivers to slow down.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — North Las Vegas woke up Sunday to two fatal crash investigations, opened less than five hours apart on two of the city’s big arterials, on a weekend when valley police were already pleading with drivers to slow down.

The first call came just after midnight. At about 12:02 a.m., North Las Vegas police responded to West Cheyenne Avenue and Revere Street, where a man in his 40s had been struck while crossing Cheyenne between Trade Drive and Revere Street. Investigators said the man was crossing outside a marked crosswalk when he was hit, according to police accounts reported by KTNV Channel 13. He died at the scene.

The driver, a woman in her 40s, showed no signs of impairment, according to police. The department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit took over the case, and police asked anyone who saw the crash to come forward. The man’s name and official cause of death had not been released as of Sunday night; identifications in Clark County are released by the coroner’s office once family has been notified.

Before dawn, a head-on crash inside a work zone

The second crash was violent in a different way. At about 4:45 a.m. — FOX5, citing North Las Vegas police, put the call at about 4:30 a.m. — officers were sent to Las Vegas Boulevard and Carey Avenue, an intersection that has been an active work zone, with a road closure and traffic-control devices in place.

Police said a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling north on Las Vegas Boulevard at a very high speed when it entered the closed section, veered outside the designated traffic pattern and crossed into the southbound lanes. It hit a 2011 Jeep head-on. The Jeep, driven south by a woman in her 40s, could not avoid the collision, police said.

The Camaro’s driver, a man in his 30s, died at the scene. The Jeep’s driver was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition and was later reported stable. Investigators were still working Sunday to determine whether impairment played a role in the crash. The Regional Transportation Commission reported that all lanes at the intersection were blocked in the aftermath and urged drivers to take alternate routes.

Two scenes, two very different failures

The pairing is what makes Sunday morning sting for traffic investigators. One death involved a person on foot, crossing a wide arterial outside a crosswalk in the first minutes of the day. The other involved speed, a closed work zone and a driver who ended up on the wrong side of the road before dawn. They share a city and a morning, but not a cause — and police were careful to treat them as the separate investigations they are.

What they share is a backdrop. Only days earlier, FOX5 reported that valley police and residents were saying “enough is enough” after a deadly week on Las Vegas roads, with a police captain noting that six lives had been lost on area roadways that week. Sunday’s two deaths extend that toll in the part of the valley that can least afford the trend.

Cheyenne Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard are both wide, fast arterials — the kind of roads where North Las Vegas residents walk to bus stops and shift workers drive home in the dark. The Carey Avenue intersection, in particular, had already been flagged in the coming week’s traffic advisories: an active work zone on Las Vegas Boulevard North near Carey, with a closure and traffic controls in place, and a standing warning to slow down, especially at night. It is the same warning that tops Previously’s look at the week ahead for valley drivers.

What police are asking for

Investigators have not announced any arrests or citations in either case. In the Cheyenne Avenue crash, police said the driver showed no signs of impairment; that investigation is focused on reconstruction and witness accounts. In the Carey Avenue crash, the impairment question remains open, and the speed and work-zone elements will be central to the reconstruction.

Anyone with information about either crash can contact the North Las Vegas Police Department at 702-633-9111. Anonymous tips can go to Crime Stoppers of Nevada at 702-385-5555 or through crimestoppersofnv.com.

For drivers and pedestrians heading out in the early hours this week, the department’s message is the same one it was delivering before Sunday: treat the Carey Avenue work zone as a place to slow down, use marked crosswalks on the big arterials, and assume that at 4 a.m. the road is less forgiving, not more empty.

Previously will update both investigations when North Las Vegas police release the victims’ identifications and their findings on cause.
