Law & Order: SVU Review: Jalen Brunson Reports for Duty as Detective Madison in 'Forsaken'

A wedding guest assaulted, a secret that changes the investigation, and witnesses who will not talk — on the eve of the 600th episode, Season 28 delivers another superb hour, with a Knicks captain in the squad's corner.

Some SVU hours start in the squad room. “Forsaken,” the fifth episode of Season 28, starts at a celebration — a wedding reception, the happiest room imaginable — and that contrast is exactly why it lands so hard. It is a superb, carefully handled hour, and it earns its power the right way: the episode never sensationalizes its case, never treats a young guest’s pain as a twist delivery device, and never loses sight of the people a secret can quietly abandon long before the squad ever gets the call. This is SVU remembering, again, that the title of an episode is a promise — and “Forsaken” keeps it.

The set-up, as NBC's official synopsis frames it, is stark and classic: when a wedding guest is assaulted at the reception, Benson and the squad uncover a secret that changes the course of the investigation. TVmaze's episode guide confirms the hour as Season 28, Episode 5, airing Thursday, November 5, 2026, and the preview coverage from Bleeding Cool credits the script to Justine Ferrara, directed by Steve Boyum. It is also, not incidentally, the 599th episode of the series — the last stop before next week's landmark 600th — and it plays like a show that knows exactly what it is on the eve of a milestone: confident, unhurried, and completely in command of its own grammar.

Detective Madison, reporting for duty

The guest star gets his own section because he earned it the honest way. New York Knicks captain Jalen Brunson — a lifelong fan who has said watching this show is part of his routine — makes his scripted acting debut as Detective Jay Madison, a fellow officer Benson seeks out over an earlier incident connected to the case. NBC Insider framed the casting as a bucket-list moment for Mariska Hargitay herself, and the scene plays that way: warm, easy, and blessedly unforced. Brunson's turn is a cameo, not a co-lead — one well-judged scene, played straight, no wink to the camera — and that restraint is the compliment. He does not visit the show; he reports for duty in it, holds his own opposite Hargitay, and gets out of the story's way. Madison Square Garden's captain, playing a detective named Madison, could have been pure gimmick. It is, instead, pure charm.

When the witnesses will not talk

Around that visit, the episode builds its second engine where the synopsis promises it: ADA Sonny Carisi's pursuit of justice grows increasingly complicated when key witnesses refuse to cooperate. In lesser hands that is procedural friction. Here it is the moral argument of the hour — what justice is supposed to do when the people it needs most will not help it, and how a family can close ranks around the very silence that caused the harm. Peter Scanavino plays Carisi's frustration the way he has learned to across the years: not as bluster, but as a prosecutor watching a careful case thin out in his hands and refusing to pretend that is fine. Opposite him, Hargitay's Benson does what only Benson does — she holds the room steady, keeps the focus on the person at the center of the case, and reminds everyone that a witness who will not talk is not the end of the squad's responsibility. Twenty-eight seasons in, that steadiness has not dulled at all.

If there is a nitpick, it is a small one, and it is really a compliment in disguise: an hour carrying a guest turn this anticipated could easily have bent itself around its visitor, and the middle stretch briefly feels the pull — viewers who came only for Detective Madison may wish the show had kept him a little longer. It costs the episode almost nothing. The ensemble grounding helps throughout — Rollins, Bruno and Curry give the squad room its lived-in weight — the investigative beats stay patient, and the episode trusts quiet, difficult stretches instead of reaching for a jolt every few minutes.

My take:

“Forsaken” is early-season SVU at full strength — a painful premise handled with care, a Carisi episode with real courtroom stakes, a guest star who came to act rather than to pose, and Benson holding the center on the eve of the 600th episode. Season 28 is five for five. Previously score: 9.2/10.

Spoiler note: this review discusses the episode's premise and themes only. Nothing about how the case — or the episode — ends.
