Luka Doncic Is Making 30 Look Routine

Forty points in Sacramento on Wednesday night — a 116–103 win over the Kings — made it six straight 30-point games for Luka Doncic, five of them past 40, and every one of them stacked with the rebounds, the assists and the threes to match.

Luka Doncic started the night missing everything. Four shots up, four shots missed, Sacramento up eight early and Golden 1 Center feeling good about itself. By the end of it he had 40 points, the Los Angeles Lakers had a 116–103 road win, and the loudest quiet streak in the league had stretched to six games.

Thirty is supposed to be a big night. Doncic is treating it like a cover charge. The run now goes 52 at Utah, 41 against Portland, 37 at Golden State, 45 against Toronto, 42 against Miami and 40 in Sacramento — six straight games of 30 or more, five of them past 40. And none of them are empty scoring lines: every game in the streak also clears five rebounds, five assists and five made 3-pointers to go with the points. Lakers Nation noted on Wednesday that no player in NBA history has stacked six straight games of at least 35 points, five rebounds, five assists and five 3-pointers. The record book can argue with itself. His season average sits at 38.5 points a night through eight games — the best mark in the league.

Two heaters settled it

Sacramento made a game of it for a quarter and a half. The first ended 28–28, and Darius Acuff Jr. was giving the Lakers real problems. Then Doncic decided the second quarter was his. With the score tied at 46, his pull-up jumper put Los Angeles ahead for good — and then he scored 11 straight points by himself, walking into halftime with 23 and a 61–54 lead. In the third he did it again: another personal 11-point run, the lead into double digits for the first time, 87–74 after three. Games have turning points. This one had the same turning point twice.

The Kings kept coming anyway. Acuff Jr. finished with 22 points and 12 assists, Zach LaVine added 21, and Domantas Sabonis muscled his way to 16 points and 17 rebounds. Sacramento cut it to seven in the fourth quarter. But Austin Reaves, who scored 21, held the lead while Doncic rested, and when the game needed closing, Doncic closed it the unglamorous way — at the free-throw line, where he went 12-for-13 on the night. Walker Kessler's 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks did the rest of the lifting behind him.

The standings say the quiet part out loud. Los Angeles is 7–2 and tied near the top of the West. Sacramento is 1–7, and a season that started with real hope is already running out of runway.

The run gets a stage next

Friday brings Portland to Los Angeles for an Emirates NBA Cup game, and then the Lakers head out on a four-game road trip. Somebody is going to hold Luka Doncic under 30 eventually. Six teams in a row have now tried it with six different game plans, and the number has not moved. Until it does, this is the show.
