Madrid's opener was the ugliest goal Mbappé will ever score, and he barely knew anything about it. Yan Diomande crossed low from the left, Barcelona defender Gerard Martín swung at the clearance, and the ball struck the onrushing Mbappé and bounced past Joan García in the 41st minute. They all count — and this one counted double, because it was also his 10th league goal of the season.
Barcelona nearly levelled before the break, Lamine Yamal failing to convert from close range, and Diomande clipped the post at the other end in first-half stoppage time. The hosts, chasing history — no team had ever opened a LaLiga season with ten straight wins, and Barcelona's nine had matched Madrid's own start from 1968-69 — pushed the game onto Madrid after half-time.
Raphinha answers, Lunin stands tall
The equaliser came in the 61st minute from a short corner: Pedri's reverse pass found Raphinha in space inside the box, and the Brazilian finished into the corner past Andriy Lunin.
Lunin was only playing because Thibaut Courtois was out with the flu — his first appearance of the season, on the biggest stage Spanish football has — and four minutes later he produced the save that kept Madrid level, a sharp right hand to deny Martín's header from a corner. Madrid were also without Vinícius Júnior, who is serving a four-match ban, and were hanging on by then: Yamal curled one narrowly wide, Frenkie de Jong saw a shot blocked, and the Camp Nou crowd of 62,055 could feel a winner coming — for the wrong team.
The winner, and the milestone
With three minutes left, it arrived on the counter. A loose touch from Barcelona substitute Gabriel Jesus set Madrid away; Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler moved the ball on, and substitute Eduardo Camavinga — on only since the 80th minute — beat Pau Cubarsí to the through ball and squared for Mbappé to tap into the empty net.
The goal was Mbappé's 100th for Real Madrid across all competitions, reached in 116 appearances since he joined in 2024. Per Marca's count, Cristiano Ronaldo needed 105 games to reach the same mark — meaning Mbappé is in the fastest company in the club's history, the 24th player ever to score 100 in white. It was also his 11th league goal of the season and Madrid's fifth straight win in all competitions — and their first win at Camp Nou since October 2023, ending Barcelona's run of 23 consecutive home league victories.
Mbappé, to his credit, waved the milestone away. "I'm very happy, I think everyone knows I like to score goals, I like to help the team with that, but I think today it's just a detail, because the most important thing is the team's win," he told Real Madrid TV. "Honestly, the real star of the game today is the team, the group, because we knew we had to play a big game, a team game."
A title race again
The Sports Desk's read: a 100-goal milestone is a round number until it lands as an 87th-minute winner in a Clásico — Mbappé didn't just reach Ronaldo pace, he reached it on the one night that cut a six-point gap to three and ended a perfect start.
Barcelona's perfect start is over, and so is their cushion. Hansi Flick's side stay top with 27 points from ten games, but Atlético Madrid sit second on 25 and José Mourinho's Madrid — winning a Clásico for the first time since his return, in his first one since March 2013 — are three back on 24, per Reuters' table at full-time. It was Barcelona's second defeat of a brutal week, after losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.
"We didn't play a great match overall," Barcelona midfielder Pedri said, via the Associated Press. "We weren't ourselves in the first half. There were many things we could have done better."
One night, two storylines that will run all season: a title race that is suddenly real, and a Ballon d'Or appetiser — Mbappé got the better of fellow contender Yamal on the eve of Monday's ceremony in London. The season has ten games in the books. El Clásico just made sure the other 28 matter.
