There is a difference between a pop star defending a performance and a pop star defending her heart, and on Sunday night at the Hollywood Bowl, Miley Cyrus made very clear which one she was doing. According to Just Jared, Cyrus fired back during her second Hollywood Bowl show on Sunday, October 18, telling the crowd: “I can take a lot, but one thing I will not stand is any question about where my heart is when I'm on the stage. I'm fully present.” Variety, in coverage carried via its syndicated reporting, carried the same remarks from fan-captured video of the Sunday show. ClutchPoints also reported Cyrus's on-stage response to the criticism that followed her first night.
The criticism, to state it plainly, was that she had not sung every line. According to Just Jared, videos from the first Hollywood Bowl show on Friday, October 16 suggested Cyrus let parts of songs go unsung, including passages of “Party in the U.S.A.” and “Flowers.” Variety likewise reported that the online conversation after night one focused on whether Cyrus was singing all of her material. By Sunday, according to Just Jared, she had clearly heard all of it — and she answered it the old-fashioned way, from the stage, mid-show, in front of the people who had actually bought the seats.
“Before I came out, I told myself I wasn't gonna come on stage”
What made Sunday night land was not defiance alone. It was how much she admitted underneath it. According to Just Jared, Cyrus told the crowd: “I've never heard that I don't put my heart into something,” and then went further: “It is hard for me to stand up here and do this show. It does not come as natural as it once did... we change, we grow, we evolve.” Variety's account carried the same passage. According to Just Jared, she added: “This is not an experiment of you. This is an experience for me,” and then the line that stopped the room: “Before I came out for 'Orbit,' I already told myself I wasn't gonna come on stage, I was gonna run away, but never would I leave you all sitting in these seats unfulfilled.”
Sit with that for a second. These shows — billed “Miley: Bass Persuades – Live at the Hollywood Bowl,” according to Just Jared — were her first full concerts in four years, her first since 2022. According to Variety, the two nights, Friday October 16 and Sunday October 18, were framed around her album Bass Persuades, released in September as her tenth studio album, a fact American Songwriter also reported in its night-one coverage. A comeback that size would test anyone. According to Just Jared and according to Variety, Cyrus chose to tell the audience exactly that, rather than pretend the nerves were not real — and then, because she is still Miley Cyrus, she punctured her own sermon with a joke mid-song, captured on fan video and reported by Just Jared: “Oh, I forgot I'm supposed to sing every fucking line!” That is not a singer dodging an accusation. That is a singer metabolising it, live.

Night one was about Dolly
To understand why the criticism stung, you have to understand what Friday night actually was. According to Taste of Country, Cyrus's first Hollywood Bowl show carried an emotional tribute to her late godmother, Dolly Parton, who died on August 25, 2026 at age 80. American Songwriter reported the same tribute. According to Taste of Country, Cyrus performed Parton's “Jolene” and told the crowd about the only time she ever saw Parton perform live — also at the Hollywood Bowl — where Parton, to her goddaughter's delighted horror, opened with “Best of Both Worlds,” the Hannah Montana theme, and told the audience Miley was sitting out there among them. American Songwriter likewise reported the Hollywood Bowl memory and the “Jolene” performance.
So night one, according to American Songwriter and according to Taste of Country, was grief, gratitude and a singer finding her stage legs again in the most emotionally loaded venue imaginable. The set ran to 18 songs, according to mxdwn's coverage of the shows, and Consequence reported guest appearances from Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and from Model/Actriz. That is the performance that got clipped, memed and litigated online for the lines she let the crowd carry. Anyone who has ever been to a great concert knows crowds carrying lines is usually called communion. On Friday, on the internet, it got called something else — and by Sunday, according to ClutchPoints, Cyrus had decided the internet was going to hear about it from her directly.
Presence is the argument
Here is the thing about the “she didn't sing every line” genre of criticism: it treats a concert like an exam, every lyric a box to tick. According to Variety's reporting on the shows, Cyrus's whole framing of this comeback has been different — an experience, in her word, not an experiment. Just Jared quoted her drawing exactly that line on Sunday. And the arc of the weekend supports her more than her critics: night one, an 18-song set and a tribute that left her in tears over her godmother, per Taste of Country; night two, a direct, funny, visibly emotional address to the doubters, per Just Jared, Variety and ClutchPoints alike. Singers who do not care do not do either of those things.
Does that settle it? For the people in the Bowl on Sunday, apparently — the remarks were met, in the fan video reported by Just Jared, with cheers. For everyone else, the honest summary is this: a 33-year-old artist, four years off the concert stage, stood in front of one of the most famous rooms in American music, admitted she nearly walked away before the first song, and then stayed and explained herself without hiding behind a statement from a publicist. “I'm fully present,” she said, according to Just Jared. Presence, it turns out, was never really about the lines. It was about whether she showed up — and by her own account, showing up was the hardest part.
