Monster Hunter Wilds’ Free Prologue Demo Is Live on Switch 2 — and Your Hunter Carries Over to December

Capcom's free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is now live on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop. It covers the opening through Chapter 1-3, supports local wireless for up to four hunters, and your save, gear and Hunter carry over to the full game on December 4.

The Short Version

The hunt has started early on Nintendo Switch 2. Capcom has released the free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo on the Switch 2 eShop, giving owners a substantial slice of the game’s opening weeks before the full version arrives on December 4, 2026. Nintendo Life, in a reminder updated on Tuesday, October 20, confirmed the demo is now available to download, and noted it needs about 12.8 GB of free space. The release landed on October 19 Pacific Time — October 20 BST — exactly as Capcom had promised, and digital pre-orders for the full game opened the same day.

What the demo actually contains

This is not a single-hunt teaser. According to FullCleared, the Prologue Demo covers the opening of the game through Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest,” including character creation for both your Hunter and your Palico companion, an early look at the story, and hunts in the Windward Plains — the game’s first great open hunting ground. GameTrader.SG describes the same scope, calling it a meaningful slice of the opening hours that covers the prologue and the build-up to the Windward Plains.

That character creation point matters more than it might sound. Wilds opens with a full creation suite for your Hunter and Palico, and the demo includes all of it, so the character you design this week is the character you will still be playing in December. GameTrader.SG also notes the demo lets you test all 14 weapon types before committing — the full arsenal, from Great Sword and Long Sword through the ranged options — which makes the demo a genuine tryout rather than a locked showcase. If you have never played a Monster Hunter game, weapon choice is the decision that shapes everything else about how the game feels, and being able to audition all 14 for free, in real hunts, is the most useful thing a demo like this can offer.

VGC notes the Switch 2 demo appears to be the same Prologue Demo already available on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam stores: full access to the character creation menu at the start, then play through to the end of Chapter 1-3. Switch 2 owners are, in other words, getting the same on-ramp other platforms got — not a cut-down version of it.

Your save carries over — with two clear limits

The headline feature is continuity. Nintendo Life confirms your save will carry over to the full adventure when it launches on Switch 2 in December, and GameTrader.SG spells out what that includes: progress, crafted gear and Hunter customisation all transfer, so there is no starting from zero when December rolls around. Time spent in the demo is time banked in the full game — the hunts you learn, the gear you craft and the Hunter you build all come with you.

There are two limits worth knowing before you plan a session. First, there is no online multiplayer in the demo. Siliconera reports that online multiplayer is not available in this trial, just as it was not in the demo on other platforms, though it will be supported in the full game. What the demo offers instead is local play: Nintendo Life says the demo lets you experience the game with friends and family via local play, and FullCleared specifies local wireless play for up to four hunters. VGC adds the practical detail: multiple Switch 2 owners with the demo can play co-operatively by connecting their systems locally.

Second, Photo Mode is not in the demo. Siliconera confirms the Photo Mode is not present in the trial. That is a small absence, but worth flagging for players who were hoping to stage shots of their new Hunter in the Windward Plains this week — that tool waits for the full release.

Why local play is the point, not a compromise

The local-play emphasis is deliberate, and VGC captured the reasoning in an interview with Monster Hunter series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. “There was definitely a big culture in Japan for getting together to hunt back in the PSP days, and also then on the 3DS,” Tsujimoto told VGC. “Of course, that existed in other countries as well, but I think there’ll be a lot of players in Japan and around the world who’d be happy to have that experience again on Nintendo Switch 2, where you can actually gather together around the same table or in the same area, and have a local wireless hunt.”

Tsujimoto also pointed to what cross-play makes possible inside a single household once the full game arrives: a player on a PlayStation 5 and a player on a Switch 2 in the same living room can connect online through the crossplay backend and effectively have a local hunt across two different machines. The demo cannot do that part yet — online is off the table until December — but four Switch 2 systems in one room, each running the free demo, is the closest thing to that old PSP-and-3DS gathering culture the series has offered in years, and it costs nothing to try.

Pre-orders, prices and editions

Digital pre-orders opened the same day as the demo, and the pricing is the other half of this week’s news. FullCleared reports that pre-ordering the Standard Edition on the eShop by December 3 gets you the base game for $29.99 through an early adopter discount — down from the $39.99 price Capcom cut the game to over the summer. Digital pre-orders also come with two bonuses: the Guild Knight Set layered armor and the Hope Charm talisman.

Beyond the standard digital edition, FullCleared reports a physical Deluxe Edition at retailers for $39.99, which includes the base game on a game-key card plus a voucher for the Deluxe Pack cosmetics, and a digital Gold Edition for $79.99 that bundles the base game with the Cosmetic DLC Collection. GameTrader.SG lines up on the core numbers — $39.99 for the Standard Edition, $29.99 at the early-bird rate, and $79.99 for the Gold Edition — and likewise notes the physical release is a Game-Key Card rather than a traditional cartridge, a detail physical collectors will want to know before they choose an edition.

The structure here is clearly designed around the demo itself: try the opening for free now, and if it hooks you, the cheapest window to own the full game closes on December 3, the day before launch. There is no pressure to decide blind — you get roughly six weeks with the demo in hand before the early-adopter price expires.

The December launch — and what comes after

The full Switch 2 release arrives on December 4, 2026. Nintendo Life confirms the launch includes full cross-platform play and a Game-Key Card release, with a Switch 2 bundle also planned in Japan. FullCleared adds that the Switch 2 release includes all the free Title Update content released on the other platforms from day one, so Switch 2 hunters are not starting from the bare launch version players on other systems began with. And because the full game supports online play and full cross-platform play with PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, the hunting parties you form in December are not limited to Nintendo hardware.

Looking further out, Nintendo Life notes the Switch 2 launch will be followed by the game’s new expansion, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, in 2027, and Siliconera confirms the expansion is in development and will arrive in 2027 on every platform. Wilds itself is already out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC — the Switch 2 version completes the platform lineup rather than launching a new game, which is precisely why a free, carry-over prologue makes sense as the invitation.

For Switch 2 owners who have watched Wilds from the sidelines since it launched elsewhere, this is the low-risk version of catching up: a free download, the real opening chapters, your real Hunter, and a save file that simply becomes the full game on December 4 if you decide to stay. The demo is live on the eShop now — just make sure you have that 12.8 GB free first.
