THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026 — A man armed with a pistol and a knife was fatally shot by a security officer just inside the entrance of the Fred D. Thompson U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building in downtown Nashville on Thursday morning, authorities said. The shooting happened just before 9:30 a.m. at the building’s main security checkpoint — the entrance, as one federal prosecutor put it, that most people in the courthouse use.
The man, described by police as being in his 40s and from out of state, entered the lobby of the federal courthouse at the corner of Church Street and Rosa Parks Boulevard, pulled out a gun and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed. He then pulled out a knife. A security employee working with the U.S. Marshals Service drew his firearm and fired, Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron said. The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition and died there, Aaron said. WSMV reported he was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
This is a developing story. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the case, and several key questions — who the man was, and why he was at the courthouse — remain unanswered.
02 Seconds at the checkpoint
The sequence, as described by Aaron and reported by the Associated Press: the man walked into the busy lobby Thursday morning carrying a pistol and a knife. At around 9:30 a.m., he tried to fire the pistol. It failed. He pulled the knife. “The security individual fired on the armed individual,” Aaron said. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
He never made it past the security checkpoint, according to WSMV — the screening every visitor passes through on the way in. That checkpoint is the whole reason the morning didn’t become something worse. Federal courthouse entrances are typically staffed by armed former police officers contracted by the U.S. Marshals Service, the AP noted, and the main entrance is where the building’s daily traffic funnels through. “That’s the entrance that most people in this courthouse use,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Rob McGuire told reporters outside.
Think about what that means for a second: the system worked exactly the way it was designed to, against a man who walked in with a gun and a backup weapon. The checkpoint did its job.

03 The response: an evacuated library and a white SUV
The man had parked a white SUV along the sidewalk outside the courthouse, according to Aaron. That vehicle became the morning’s second scene. As a precaution, authorities evacuated the downtown branch of the Nashville Public Library, across Seventh Avenue from the courthouse, while police dogs and investigators inspected the SUV. They found nothing of concern, Aaron said.
The library stayed closed anyway. Nashville Public Library spokesperson Andrea Fanta said the downtown branch would remain closed for the day “out of an abundance of caution” — the kind of call that looks obvious in hindsight and takes judgment in the moment.
By 10 a.m., yellow crime scene tape and multiple law enforcement vehicles lined the streets near the courthouse. Officers from the Metro Nashville Police Department, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will handle the shooting investigation, Aaron said.

04 “The first time anything like this has happened”
McGuire didn’t mince words about the history here. “This is the first time anything like this has happened in this courthouse,” he said. “We’ve been here since 2022.” The building has seen its share of minor security incidents — people acting up, people removed from the premises — but, as McGuire put it, nothing approaching this kind of situation.
The Fred D. Thompson building is still the new kid on the block: it opened in 2022 and houses Nashville’s four federal judges, three magistrate judges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the federal court clerk’s office. It’s where all federal civil and criminal cases in the Nashville area are heard. The AP also noted the building houses the offices of Tennessee’s U.S. senators.
“From our perspective, that security worked today, and a threat was neutralized before a member of the public was hurt,” McGuire said. Then the human part, the part that reminds you a courthouse is also a workplace full of people with families: “People are calling their families to let them know they’re OK. I called my wife, called my son, called people that I knew were wanting to know if I was OK.”

05 What we still don’t know
The big questions are open, and we’re going to label them as open rather than fill them in. Investigators didn’t immediately know why the man was at the courthouse, the AP reported. Aaron and McGuire declined to provide more details about the man or where he is from, beyond that he was from out of state. A search of his car found “nothing threatening,” Aaron said. WSMV reported that police said the suspect “has ties to Nashville,” without elaborating on what that link is.
One piece of context, reported by the Tennessean: this is the second courthouse shooting in Middle Tennessee this year. In May, Dalton Eatherly — the controversial streamer known as “Chud the Builder” online — was accused of shooting Joshua Fox outside the Montgomery County Courthouse in Clarksville. And in November, a woman was grazed by gunfire outside Nashville’s criminal courthouse, the Justice A. A. Birch Building, in what police believe was a road-rage shooting. Different circumstances, different buildings — but the pattern is hard to ignore.
We’ll update this story as the TBI investigation develops and officials release more information.
