Nashville's Supporters' Shield Party Is Postponed: Preston Judd's Header Earns San Jose a 1-1 Draw and a Playoff Berth

Nashville SC needed a win at PayPal Park to lift the first Supporters' Shield in club history. Hany Mukhtar put them in front, but Preston Judd's second-half header gave San Jose a 1-1 draw that clinched the Earthquakes a playoff place and kept the Shield waiting at least one more week.

The Short Version

Nashville SC arrived at PayPal Park on Saturday night knowing a win would end the argument: beat the San Jose Earthquakes, and the first Supporters' Shield in club history was theirs, with home-field advantage through the playoffs and a CONCACAF Champions Cup place to go with it. For 36 second-half minutes, after Hany Mukhtar's first-half goal, they were holding that trophy in their hands. Then Preston Judd rose at a set piece, glanced Eduard Lowen's delivery inside the far post, and the party was postponed — a 1-1 draw that delayed Nashville's Shield, clinched San Jose a playoff berth, and kept the best regular season in MLS a little longer in suspense.

There was consolation on both sides of the handshake. Nashville did clinch first place in the Eastern Conference for the first time in club history with the point, and their 20-3-7 record through 30 matches — 67 points — is the best 30-match start any MLS team has ever made, per the club's own post-match notes. San Jose, outshot Nashville 13-6 per Field Level Media's account and deserved their point, extending an unbeaten run to nine matches. But Shields are not won on consolation, and Nashville head coach B.J. Callaghan did not pretend otherwise.

Mukhtar, inevitably

The goal Nashville needed came from the player it usually comes from. On 34 minutes, Mukhtar took advantage of a misplayed ball just outside the box, drove in, and saw his first attempt stopped by Quakes goalkeeper Angus Gunn — only for the rebound to fall straight back to him. The second effort was rifled over Gunn's shoulder and into the top netting. It was Mukhtar's 16th goal of the season and his sixth in his last five matches, matching the best scoring streak of his MLS career, per Nashville's club notes. On a night built for a coronation, the league's most reliable big-game scorer had done his part.

The evening carried a second storyline in gold and blue: Cristian Espinoza, a San Jose player from 2019 through 2025, returning to PayPal Park in Nashville colours. "It was really special to me, to come back and play here against San Jose where I spent so many years, and to see all my old teammates," Espinoza said afterwards, in quotes released by the club. "It was a good game, we tried to do our best to obtain the three points, but we'll take the point and move on from there."

Judd's career year picks its moment

San Jose had warned Nashville early. Inside the first 20 minutes Judd headed a Jack Jasinski cross just over, then flicked a Jamar Ricketts pass into the side netting with a quick back-heel, according to Sports Radio Service's account of the match. After half-time the pressure became a siege. Judd had already seen one close-range chance gobbled up by Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake in the 66th minute when, four minutes later, the equaliser arrived: Lowen's outswinging free kick from about 35 yards on the right flank, Judd getting across Dan Lovitz and redirecting a glancing header, taken while leaning backward on the run, inside the far post with Schwake rooted to his line.

It was Judd's 16th goal of the season too — a career year by any measure, and his fifth goal in his last six matches, per Field Level Media. Nashville pushed back late, and substitute Elias Saad came closest to restoring the lead: Dave Romney blocked his best attempt in the 80th minute, and Gunn saved another Saad effort deep in stoppage time. When the whistle went, the home crowd celebrated a playoff place — San Jose's berth was confirmed by the night's other results, draws for San Diego against the LA Galaxy and Colorado in Portland — while Nashville's players did the arithmetic on a Shield that is now one point away.

"For us, every time we play the objective is to play our way and to go for three points," Callaghan said afterwards, in the club's post-match quotes. "So yeah, there's a level of disappointment that we didn't reach our objective. But I think San Jose was really good tonight and challenged us in a lot of different ways. We're going to learn and we'll get better, get rest, recover and look to turn it around next week."

The Shield math, and what comes next

The maths is now simple, if the waiting is not. Because Vancouver won 2-1 at Austin earlier on Saturday, Nashville need one more point to secure the Shield, per Field Level Media, with four matches remaining. Their next chance comes at CF Montreal on October 24, per The Tennessean — and a team unbeaten in 22 of its last 24 league matches, per the club's notes, will back itself to finish the job there. The Eastern Conference's top seed is already theirs, a first in club history, and Sam Surridge's 100th career MLS appearance on Saturday was a reminder of how deep this squad runs.

For San Jose, fourth in the Western Conference per the Associated Press and now confirmed playoff participants, the nine-match unbeaten run — six of them draws, per Field Level Media — is the kind of stubbornness that travels well in November. Judd is hot, Gunn is making the saves he has to, and nobody will volunteer to visit PayPal Park in the first round. Nashville's coronation was postponed on Saturday night. Nothing about the way this team plays suggests it was cancelled.
