Saturday morning — here is the nightly news in one place. A wildfire in Orange County burned into two coastal cities and sent thousands from their homes, Wall Street closed out its roughest week in months over the cost of the AI boom, Texas cleared half a million stalled voter records just in time for early voting, and Apple finally opened pre-orders on a folding iPhone. This wrap runs down the ten biggest stories of Friday, October 16, tight.
1. Norte Fire Damages or Destroys Six Homes in Orange County, With 16,000 People Under Evacuation Orders
The Norte Fire held at 465 acres with zero containment into Friday evening, officials said, after damaging or destroying six homes in San Juan Capistrano and sending two firefighters to the hospital with heat-related injuries. Evacuation orders covered about 6,000 homes and an estimated 16,000 residents across zones in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, and the fire remained the region's top emergency heading into the weekend. Our Norte Fire report and Friday evening's update have the zone-by-zone picture.
2. Nasdaq Falls 2.1% to Cap Its Worst Week in Months as AI Debt Fears Bite
Investopedia reported the Nasdaq Composite down 2.1% and the S&P 500 down 1.2% at Friday's close, leaving the Nasdaq 4.5% lower for the week, while the Dow slipped 0.3% on the day but gained 0.7% for its second straight weekly advance. The selling centered on the borrowing behind the AI buildout: CoreWeave shares fell sharply on the week and the yield on its 2031 bonds briefly topped 16%, making the Nvidia-backed firm, with about $50 billion in debt, the market's test case for AI financing. Our markets close report and our CoreWeave breakdown have the numbers.
3. Texas Clears a Backlog of More Than 500,000 Voter Records Days Before Early Voting Opens
Texas officials said counties have cleared a backlog of more than 500,000 voter-registration records that a Department of Public Safety software failure had stalled since October 2025. The clearance lands just in time: early voting for the November 3 midterms begins Monday, October 19, and the backlog had become a central fight of the state's election season. Our Texas voter backlog report explains how the records stalled and what officials say happens next.
4. Pre-Orders Open for the iPhone Duo, Apple's First Foldable, at $1,999
The iPhone Duo went on sale at 5 a.m. PT Friday in the United States and more than 70 other countries, Apple's long-awaited entry into foldables. The device is a 5.4-inch phone that unfolds to a 7.6-inch display, starts at $1,999 and ships October 23, putting Apple head-to-head with years of Samsung and Google folding phones at the highest price the iPhone line has carried. Our iPhone Duo pre-order report has the specs and the ship date.
5. Netflix Shakes Up the Top: Bela Bajaria Leaves, Peter Rice Takes Over Content
Netflix announced that chief content officer Bela Bajaria is leaving after nearly 10 years, with former Walt Disney Television chairman Peter Rice succeeding her on October 26. The change comes one day after the streamer cut roughly 1,000 jobs in its biggest layoff round since 2022, making this the most significant reshuffle of Netflix's content leadership in a decade. Our Netflix leadership report has what changes on October 26.
6. South Korea Gives GTA VI an Adults-Only Rating, Clearing the Road to November 19
South Korea's game rating board classified Grand Theft Auto VI adults-only at its October 16 meeting, permitting official distribution to adults ahead of the November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The rating was the new private board's most high-profile decision since it took over adults-only classifications, and it removes one of the last regional hurdles before launch; Activision's marketing chief also told The Game Business this week that GTA VI and Modern Warfare 4 are 2026's two biggest games. Our GTA VI rating report has the board's decision and the launch calendar.
7. Hurricane Trudy Peaks at Category 3, Then Weakens to Category 1 Off Mexico's Pacific Coast
Trudy rapidly intensified into a Category 3 hurricane early Friday with 120 mph winds, but the National Hurricane Center said satellite data and a Hurricane Hunter flight showed it weaker than first indicated, and by Friday afternoon it was a Category 1 storm with winds near 85 mph about 225 miles southwest of Acapulco, according to the Associated Press. A hurricane warning was in effect from Manzanillo to Playa Perula, forecasters expected the center to approach the coast of southwestern and west-central Mexico on Saturday and pass near it Saturday night into Sunday, and up to 15 inches of rain raised flood and landslide risks in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco. Our Trudy tracker report follows the weekend approach.
8. In Bend, Police Say a Teacher Threw Her Phone at the Silver Rail Shooter, Then Tackled Him
A day after three students and a teacher were killed at Silver Rail Elementary, Bend police described how another teacher threw her phone at the 16-year-old gunman and then tackled him before a parent stopped the attack. Police said that teacher was not injured and almost certainly prevented more bloodshed; the four killed on Thursday were three students and teacher Megan Lambert, 25. Our Bend follow-up has the police account and what investigators have said since.
9. Coast Guard Rescues 16 People Found Floating Off Baja California; Search Continues for Others
U.S. Coast Guard crews responding to a 1 a.m. distress call Friday found people floating in the Pacific about 140 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico, with no vessel in sight. At least 16 people were rescued and taken to San Diego-area hospitals, a survivor said as many as 27 had been aboard, and a joint U.S.-Mexican search continued for the rest. Our Coast Guard rescue report has what officials know about the boat that was never found.
10. The Beatles' 'Rubber Soul' Returns to the Billboard 200 Top 10 for the First Time Since 1966
A Special Edition remix built from the original four-track tapes drove the 1965 classic to No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 58,000 units — 50,000 of them pure sales — plus No. 1 finishes on Top Album Sales, Top Rock Albums and Vinyl Albums. It is the album's first week in the top 10 in 60 years, a reminder that the week's biggest chart story belonged to a record released before most of this week's chart artists' parents were born. Our Rubber Soul chart report breaks down the remix and the sales.
That is the night. Fire crews in Orange County work through the weekend with no containment reported yet, Trudy makes its closest approach to Mexico's coast, and Texas opens early voting on Monday with its rolls cleared. We will be back tomorrow night with the next wrap.
