Phantom Blade Zero, Modern Warfare 4, and the Rest of October's Loaded Back Half

October's back half is the strongest release stretch of the year: Castlevania: Belmont's Curse (Oct 15), Final Fantasy Resonance (Oct 22), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (Oct 23), and Phantom Blade Zero (Oct 29). Every date verified.

The Short Version

If you thought October was already spent because Battlefield 6 and Gears of War: E-Day ate the first half of the month, sit down. The back half of October is arguably the strongest two-week release stretch of the year: Castlevania returns, Call of Duty comes back to Nintendo, Final Fantasy goes HD-2D, and Phantom Blade Zero finally — finally — arrives. Here’s everything that still matters between now and Halloween, in order, with the context you actually need.

01 October 13–16: The Warm-Up

Tuesday the 13th opens with three solid gets. SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide lands on Switch — licensed kids’ games are quietly one of the most reliable sellers in the industry, and this one has the holiday gift slot all to itself. Planet Zoo 2 arrives on PC, PS5, and Xbox the same day; Frontier’s zoo sims have one of the most devoted audiences in management gaming, and the sequel has been a long time coming. And Valor Mortis hits Xbox, PS5, and PC — the week’s wild card.

Thursday the 15th is the week’s real date. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is the headliner: Konami’s first proper new Castlevania in years, developed jointly with Evil Empire (Dead Cells) and Motion Twin, set in Paris in 1499 — 23 years after the events of Castlevania III. You play Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor, fighting through the burning streets of Paris and Dracula’s castle with the Vampire Killer whip, which now doubles as a traversal tool. The English voice cast is stacked: Abby Trott as Rose, Graham McTavish as Dracula, Liam O’Brien reprising Isaac from Curse of Darkness, plus JB Blanc, Alejandra Reynoso, Ray Chase, and Erica Lindbeck. A free demo is out now and your save transfers to the full game, which lands on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC.

The same day brings Ratatan (PS5, PS4, Xbox, Switch 2) — the rhythm-action roguelike from the Patapon creator, and one of the year’s most charming oddities — and Toy Story 3 Complete Edition across basically every platform still breathing. Friday the 16th belongs to Switch 2: Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 all land on Nintendo’s handheld, alongside Tales of Eternia Remastered on everything.

02 October 22–23: The Big Week

Thursday the 22nd is the RPG crowd’s Christmas. Final Fantasy Resonance is Square Enix’s first HD-2D Final Fantasy — co-developed with Lancarse, adapting the original story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a full console RPG. Rain, Lasswell, and Fina anchor a classic crystals-and-knights story, with series icons like Cloud, Tidus, Terra, and Zidane appearing as equippable “Visions” and a Sephiroth cameo for the trailer crowd. A free demo is available now on all platforms, taking you through the end of chapter one. It’s out on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2 — the rare Square Enix RPG that launches everywhere at once.

The same day, Switch 2 gets Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves — SNK’s fighter finally getting its Nintendo handheld port, and a sports title aimed squarely at the family holiday slot.

Then Friday the 23rd: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Infinity Ward’s new chapter sets its campaign on the Korean Peninsula — a North Korean invasion, a young South Korean squad on the collapsing front lines, and a vengeful Captain Price working off the books from the shadows, with missions spanning Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Multiplayer ships with 12 all-new 6v6 maps, the return of Gunfight and the DMZ extraction mode, a new “Kill Block” map whose layout dynamically reconfigures between rounds, and the removal of hipfire bloom. Campaign early access starts October 16 for pre-orders.

Two business details matter more than any map. First: Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform since 2013’s Ghosts on the Wii U — the Switch 2 version, built by Digital Legends, supports cross-play and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. Second, and bigger: it is not on Game Pass at launch. After Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 launched day one on the service, Activision is holding this one back — Game Pass subscribers wait at least a year. Microsoft bought Activision to put Call of Duty on Game Pass; the year’s biggest shooter skipping it is the clearest signal yet of how the subscription math is going.

03 October 27–29: The Finale

Tuesday the 27th is quiet — Minecraft on Switch 2, which will sell approximately forever — and then Thursday the 29th closes the month with a genuine heavyweight double bill.

Phantom Blade Zero is the one the action crowd has been waiting on since its 2023 reveal. S-Game’s “Kung Fu Punk” — traditional Chinese wuxia fused with steampunk machinery, built in Unreal Engine 5 — stars Soul, an assassin with 66 days to live, with Donnie Yen on board as a creative consultant for the choreography. Thirty weapons, three difficulty settings, a parry-driven combat system the previews keep calling demanding but fair, and a director who says you can theoretically beat the whole thing with a childhood wooden sword. It’s $59.99 standard, $69.99 for the digital deluxe, and it’s PS5 and PC only — a reported 12-month console exclusivity window on PlayStation.

The road here was bumpy: originally dated September 9 at The Game Awards, it slipped roughly 50 days to October 29 at Sony’s June State of Play, with S-Game saying it wanted the strongest possible day-one version rather than leaning on post-launch patches. And there’s genuine controversy attached: despite a retailer once promising a physical boxed edition, S-Game has confirmed the launch is digital-only, and the “no disc, no buy” crowd is loud about it. Strong previews, angry collectors — we’ll see which matters more at the register.

Sharing the date: The Wolf Among Us Remastered on PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch, and Switch 2 — Telltale’s noir fairy-tale classic, spruced up, arriving just in time for Halloween. Appropriate.

04 The Business Story

Step back and the month tells two stories about where the industry is going. Story one: Call of Duty — the franchise Microsoft spent $69 billion to own — is skipping Game Pass at launch. The subscription was supposed to be the everything machine; the year’s biggest shooter just said “not yet.” That’s not a scheduling quirk, that’s a strategy correction, and every other publisher watching the Game Pass numbers just got their answer.

Story two is the disc. Phantom Blade Zero, one of the month’s biggest releases, launches digital-only to genuine fan anger — while, in the same month, an 82-rated indie pixel adventure just got a full multi-territory physical edition. The two events rhyme: big publishers are done with plastic, and boutique publishers have built an entire economy out of the fans the big guys left behind. The future of the game disc isn’t at Activision. It’s at the companies pressing a few thousand copies of the games people actually love.

And the release calendar itself? Compare the halves. The front of October gave us Gears of War: E-Day and Battlefield 6 — huge, but expected. The back half gives us Castlevania’s return, Final Fantasy’s first HD-2D entry, Call of Duty’s Nintendo homecoming, and the wuxia epic three years in the making. The front half was the appetizer. Pace yourself.
